How is the community so far?

PvP? Tried it? Is it quality?

And do you see longevity with the story?
    Battle System:
Starting with FFXI and running through the original XIV, the battles had been... boring, for lack of a better word. It was basically you could do a fight while watching TV, looking over every 45 seconds to see if you have enough TP built up to hit your macro.

FFXIV battles are much more like World of Warcraft (or other modern MMOs.) The red circles show up to show what the area of the enemies attack is (if it's a cone it will show the cone, etc.) and you have to avoid it. The pace is much quicker. You have your hotbars to show your skills, and the interface is resizable (Medium-Large-Small sizes for each window.) There are combos between some of your skills, so you get used to using them in a certain order - but there isn't a need for 15 hotbars on your screen like in WoW. I'd say it's a pretty happy balance between being boring and being overloaded with too much to do.

    Classes:
Okay, so there are jobs and there are classes. You start out with basic classes, and once you hit 30 in one class and 15 in another (the combinations vary) you can undertake a quest to gain a job. The job is just a crystal that you equip, and it gives you access/turns you into that class while you have that gear set on. Each class is tied to a weapon-type.
    Basic Classes
    Disciples of War
Gladiator - Heavy plate-armor wearing, Sword n' Board tank.
    Pugilist - Hand-to-Hand DPS.
Marauder - Heavy plate-armor wearing, 2H Axe DPS.
Lancer - Polearm-wielding DPS (may be able to offtank in a pinch if the tank dies)
Archer - Ranged DPS. Name speaks for itself.

    Disciples of Magic
Conjurer - Your basic Healing class.
Thaumaturge - Your basic caster DPS class.
Arcanist - Pet-class [2 versions of Carbuncle] caster (mostly damage, does get a small heal and pet heal as well.)

    Jobs
As I wrote earlier, jobs are attained after reaching 30/15 in your set classes. These are more of the classic FF classes - more specialized than using jobs.
Paladin - 30 Gladiator/15 Conjurer. Tanky with some heals. The defensive mainstay.
Monk - 30 Pugilist/15 Lancer. Hand-to-hand beatdown specialization is their game.
Warrior - 30 Marauder/15 Gladiator. A bit tanky, but mostly 2H Axe DPS. Some think they can tank, but it's not always preferred.
Dragoon - 30 Lancer/15 Marauder. Some sweet DPS with jumps and polearms. No pet this game.
Bard - 30 Archer/15 Pugilist. Ranged DPS with a few party-support skills mixed in.
White Mage - 30 Conjurer/15 Arcanist. The healer of healers.
Black Mage - 30 Thaumaturge/15 Archer. They make things go boom.
    Summoner - 30 Arcanist/15 Thaumaturge. More pet&DoT-based DPS. Pet's are Ifrit-egi, Garuda-egi and Titan-egi.
Scholar - 30 Arcanist/15 Conjurer. Fairy-pet type based healing. Also provides some party buffs.

    The Community
Well, the NA/EU community is pretty whiny, but that's to be expected since they can't log in. I haven't had any issues running into bad groups of people on the JP server I play on and I'm in an English-speaking Linkshell (basically chat channel that you have to be invited to, used to be their version of guilds) and Free Company (what FFXIV:ARR calls their guild system.)

    PvP
Not my cup of tea in MMOs, I dislike PvP quite a bit. I don't think it's implemented yet, but the only thing there will be is arena-type PvP. Nothing open world, thank god.

    Story
I've enjoyed the story so far, but I don't pay too much attention to it. We'll see how it goes when I reach end game. It's been very interesting so far, but I can't give a plus-or-minus to it since I don't play MMOs for the story.

There hasn't been a successful MMO launch in the history of MMO's.

SWTOR had 3 hour queue times.. WoW had one of the worst launches of any online game ever.. 2 days is not indicative of the game.

Marauder/Warrior was the superior tank in 1.0 and queues as a tank in ARR. They tank through health absorption from weaponskills and abilities. The upgrades in their abilities between phase 3 and 4 made them much more of a viable endgame tank also with 300% health absorption from Inner Beast's dmg and Storm's Path absorbs health on combo now as well. Storm's Eye on combo increases healing % received by 50% now and their Defiance stance is a flat 25% increase to HP.. They're going to have a MASSIVE health pool with tons of ways to regain it. Warrior and White Mage will probably be a good team while Paladin will be more suited for Scholar's healing over time spells

Re: Official OS General MMO Information Thread

I played FFXI for 2 years and the community was very well mannered.

For FFARR, the community isn't bad now, it's for the most part helpful.
I believe after the first month that the kids will go away and will resemble the FFXI community that I remember.

The battle system is much more like WoW or GW2. It's a giant step from FFXI.

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to run as. I've always been attracted towards healing in MMOs. The A.I in games is predictable, however, human stupidity is not and makes the healer stay on their toes. >< To me, healing is just plain fun =)

I read that there is a shortage of tanks. Once I get the basics of this game down, I think I'm goin give it a shot

DPS is nice to switch to from time to time in a MMO for me. I never got around to unlocking the Dragoon class from XI, but I'll probably look into it this game.

For anyone who wants a look at the game. Don't know how much longer the stream is going to go.

Edit: And that was brilliant timing as it literally just ended as I was typing.

We had a rule that Warriors never tanked for us

              I am a class-ist though.

if you are enjoying the game, I am truly happy for you, all I want is to play the game and I cannot without abandoning my friends... I don't know what other game launches have to do with the re-launch of this game.

Is it supposed to be ok that I cannot even log into the game world, because other games have had launch issues as well?

but again its only been 2 days now that I haven't been able to log in so its ok.

I don't think anyone is saying it's okay... but there is so much overreaction going on all over the internet for a game that hasn't launched yet. Hardware errors happen.

The thing is, you're expecting too much if you DO expect the game to not have launch issues. That's your problem. Why would you expect this game not to when every other MMO has? Since you're so optimistic, may as well go play the lottery while you're at it. Surely just because you've never won it means that you will this time? That's how that logic works, right?

Pulling aggro isn't the issue... Keeping it is.

Harder than one would think in this game. I quite enjoy it.

Perhaps, although I'm pretty confident, given the right skills, keeping it shouldn't be an issue.

Except here's the thing. You specifically said in your post "this is a no buy for me", which means you haven't bought it yet. So what you're getting mad at is not being able to play a game that A) you haven't paid for and B) hasn't even officially launched yet. Makes perfect sense. Nevermind the fact that the servers have worked flawlessly all day.
