Indeed it does; you have to press your foot all the way down on the brake to activate it though, so if you want the engine to stay on you just don't press the brake all the way down. Then when you lift your foot off the break the engine restarts on its own. I'm just nervous about the engine being off; any time your engine turns off there's that extremely slight chance it doesn't come back on again.

Most will do it with the a/c on unless it is turned up high, sucks in the south when it is hot and you need the air on the whole time. Most will start back up after a short period if you stop for too long. It's basically putting the car in neutral and stopping or slowing the engine and then firing it up with a faster option than the regular old starter.

If you want to turn it off permanently, try putting the car in sport mode or whatever it is called and that should turn it off.


There is at least one make that doesn't start until you press the gas, it takes some getting used to.

Yes, the increasing presumptuousness of technology is a big gear grinder, automotive and otherwise. My current car is the first one I've ever had that turns the engine off if you're stopped for like 2 or 3 seconds. The first time it happened I thought my engine had stalled out, lol. It won't even activate if the A/C is on it seems, thus defeating the purpose during summer when limiting emissions would be most helpful. You can't even permanently turn it off, you have to turn it off every time you start the car

By no means am I just realizing or experiencing this, but people on social media are flat out inhumanly mean. I cannot believe how insensitive and flat out sadistic people can be with their comments, across many platforms.

I am an elementary administrator at a rural school. We had an opening occur with is a pain since recruiting teachers to a rural school is quite the challenge, so I started to think out of the box to broaden the recruiting effort (this is along with all the other recruiting sites on which the job is posted). I chose to do a 30 second TikTok panning our beautiful little campus and communicating our positives. I tagged all the teacher whatever they're called, but I made a mistake, thanks to my daughter, she said tag FYP, for you page, which meant it went out to potentially all people on TT. I had one of my teachers that has the kindest voice to do the narration and I was quite proud of the result. Within an hour of posting I had to delete the video because of all the nasty comments and the mean things being said about the person narrating. It made me almost physically ill and sure ruined my day.

I guess that's what I get for trying to be creative.

I right there with you guys on this. Me and the family went on vacation to Maui a few years back. We rented a newer van ( Cryslar Pacifica). First stoplight it get to the damn engine just shuts off. I'm at a loss. It also didn't have an actual key. Just the push button start up. So I'm pressing buttons, hitting the key fob, etc and can't figure it out. Finally I take my foot off the brake and boom we are good. I mean they couldn't have told me it did that?

I maintain that with "top comments" properly sorted, YouTube comments can get the best laughs out of a day from me.

Some posting styles can get repetitive, but when it is original humor it can absolutely kill me.

But that's about it. I don't know if that counts as social media or not.

I have been meaning to write some version of this post for some time now.

People nowadays only seem to focus on what they perceive are the negatives (of which there are plenty) of social media without recognizing the positives (which outweighs them).

Social media might be a victim of its own success. The benefits have been so thoroughly internalized that they have become second nature, taken for granted and so incorporated to everyday life that people act like they always have been there from time immemorial.

I swear if you asked someone to tell you 5 things wrong with social media they would give you 10, but if you ask them for 5 benefits they would draw a blank.

What I've always heard whenever I bring it up is that it brings a voice to the previously voiceless, and it calls out people/things who deserve to be called out. I'm pretty sure the people who say this are the same people refreshing their feed every 10 seconds hoping/waiting for the next person to get canceled. Hell of a way to live life.

Benefits from social media that didn’t exist before? I don’t know, sharing a post? That’s a benefit. The easy, accessible, ability of sharing a photo, a video, a thought with your friends and family in an instant.

Yes, previous you could take a photo of your new born son. You could develop said photo at Walgreens, pay for an extra copy (or maybe you took 2 Polaroids?) and give it to your parents as a gift as soon as possible. You could even create a physical album (I had some of those). You could scan said photo and have it in your computer. You could attach it from your computer and send it through an email (if they had one).

But the act of taking a photo from a smartphone, touch, click on share, select *insert your favorite social media platform*, and share the photo instantaneously to all your friends and family is something only of recent times. That’s something tangible, that, however small if you want to minimize it, enhances our shared experiences.

I don’t know, how about recording police abuse by a conscientious young citizen in a Minneapolis sidewalk and then sharing on Facebook. If you take a video and there is nobody to see it, does it make a sound?

Black Lives Matter started as a hashtag.

“Me Too” was originally coined by Tarana Burke and first used in MySpace (2006), and took flight as a hashtag on Twitter (2017).

To be a benefit it doesn’t need to be something capital S for Serious, something as soothing as a PlayStation 5 live stream unboxing during the Christmas' holidays on YouTube can fit the bill.

On a more macro sense, stuff as fundamental as the exchange of information, exchange of ideas in conversational way (bi-directional) instead of a one way direction.

Finding like-minded individuals at the touch of a button (yes, it has its downsides). Creating groups about share interests.

Something like "staying in touch", which yes, existed before Facebook, existed even before the advent of the internet, was revolutionized and expanded exponentially by Facebook. That's something primal that everyone can relate to and it was made accessible, in a user-friendly manner to anyone with internet access and an email account around the world. And FB in particular, since FB was pretty much the site that made everyone's parents and grandparents get on the internet.

And you do know that under not-too esoteric definitions of social media these forums, forums in general, are considered social media too. Do you get any benefit from this site? Is discussing basketball with your same 4 buddies as stimulating as jeebs video breakdowns or oj's wall text (irony isn't lost on me) analysis?

Even something as unessential as a peek into the lives of celebrities, without the filter of the media (not saying that the peek isn't curated for our consumption) is something better than being dictated to by self-declared gate keepers.

And those smartphones you carry everywhere, they are optimized for social media engagement, which helped move technology forward.

And that's right dubcity, democratization and platforms provided (however marginal) to the voiceless is a benefit of social media. The ability to effectively, in a fast manner, organize on the streets, to the streets can be a benefit of social media.

And we haven't discuss stuff like Whatsapp or Signal.

Also memes, the rise of the memes is due to social media!

As for the downsides, plenty of them (acceleration of political polarization, misinformation, “surveillance capitalism” etc.). The last two can be managed with by yourself, but that's a whole other post. But it seems to me some of what people consider problems in social media can be dealt with by login off and/or flagging/reporting/blocking/unfollowing/ignoring. Especially when it comes to people like us in this forum, in their late 20's, early/mid/late 30's, 40's etc. You didn’t grow up with social media (not to the extend kids today), feel free to step back and take a break.

How many of your problems in social media could be dealt with by ignoring your cousin or blocking your high-school buddy that you only stay in touch because of FB? FB gives you the choice to stay in contact with those individuals, but that's it is ultimately your choice.

I don't know, I just see social media as a tool and one in which I apply rules that I apply in real life, like: keep the good, dispose of the rest. Gotta be smart.

People say: “you wouldn’t say that to him/her in real life” like that’s a problem, that ain’t a bug, that’s a feature. Yes, social media can be a cruel place with people who “hide” behind their anonymity to lob grenades, insults that they “wouldn’t dare” to do in real life. To that I say, so? One can see it as cowards behind a keyboard or you could have a favorable interpretation and describe it as the protection afforded by anonymity (there is abuse on the internet, I'm not oblivious to that fact).

And people who use that argument can sometimes leave a whiff of latent authoritarianism, of the physical violence they would inflict in others as a response of a perceived psychological wrong done to them. It is in some ways a manifestation of the frustration that comes from a role-reversal.

Same people that ruined many comment sections by demanding Facebook accounts to be able to comment, hey buddy, it is a called a fake account, get on with the times. Your Liam Neeson-Taken fantasy where you find them and then kill them ain’t happening. You’re the people that wishes everyone’s social security number be linked to a single all-purpose internet account where those that “do wrong” can get their tickets billed from the internet police.

I didn’t wanna say it, but seems to me a lot of peoples’ problems with social media has to do with basically: “you are doing it wrong”. People coming to OS and bemoaning “hot takes”, like, why so cereal? Hot takes are fun, Bucks go down 0-2 and Twitter is littered with hot takes left and right, good, let people have some fun. The “problem” seems to come from those taking the hot takes seriously, apparently people aren’t allowed to have “snap opinions (aka hot takes)” because someone, somewhere might get their feelings hurt. "We can’t have stupid people, with stupid takes on social media, no sir, not on my watch" says the internet police. Just chillax, no one is taking it seriously (except you), it is all in fun (no need to cry for Playoff P) and even those who do believe very seriously in the epistemological certainty of their hot takes to that I say, take a deep breath, no one is going to die from a hot take*.

Now, on the derided comment sections. Comments sections bother you? (I'm not talking about Hammerhunker's case specifically, it should be clear by now that this is a more general post directed to all of you who keep complaining about comment sections, but don't seem able to quit them). Which are these comment sections? Actively moderated (humans actually looking at stuff) comment sections can be good. New York Times comments section can be insightful. Slate's comment section can be insightful and funny. Sometimes people get a little cray cray and posts get reported and moderated, that's evidence of the system working. Other sites can be more heavy handed (like OS, mainly due to the TOS) and can act as a safe space.

So where are these comment sections that are ruining your life? YouTube? Blzer had smart tip: have YT comments defaulted to Top Comments. My experience is that YT comments, when sorted by Top Comments, are overwhelmingly funny/hilarious (depending on the subject matter of course). Sometimes they can be thoughtful, sometimes they can be stupid. Lots of fun. Best part after watching a YT video is going to the comments and laughing out loud and start hitting the like-button left and right. Now, if you liked to visit Alex Jones videos (or something of that sort), you gotta accept some cuckoo for cocoa puffs type of comments.

Is it Twitter? Is that what’s hurting you? Because on Twitter if you follow garbage, you will get garbage, no doubt about it. Flag/mute/report/block and move on. So be smart and don't torture yourself following Skip or the Undefeated account on Twitter

Got ratioed? Pick yourself up, life goes on.

I can’t do all social media sites, I don’t use many of them so I don’t know the particularities of the comment sections that all yall are having trouble with. Perhaps you should look into the sites that you are visiting. Now, if you choose to go to Stormfront or the like then I can't help you. If you go to the wrong place it can **** with your mind, but that's also true in real life. It is like a modified version of that saying, visit stupid sites, win stupid prices.

Live chats? Same difference, I have been on FanGraphs live chats and people know to behave. Other live chats on other sites your mile may vary.

And I practice what I preach, my FB has been deactivated for years now :P
It is better that way, it makes look mysterious and interesting or anti-social depending on you look at it

Remember: Be smart, be mindful of the sites you visit, people you follow. Flag/report/mute/block/ignore/unfollow/deactivate. And like Captain Planet says:
