That was my entire point...I don't have a problem for the warning if the guy was 10-15 over...just the "I would never give a cop a ticket" mindset scares me. 30+ over isn't just "speeding" IMO. That's just not safe. I'd get raped by a cop if I was pulled over doing 30, you know?

Then you get to other things like DUI, etc...would people not ticket for those? It's the thought of that which scares me. I know everyone here's just looking out for their own like we all do, and I don't think anyone here would let someone truly dangerous get away with a serious criminal offense, at least I hope not.

I don't really give a f about minor traffic tickets. It's just the "Do you know who I am?" mindset...it's like some cops feel entitled to not get punished.

I'm a big fan of cops, I know they do a f'n tough job for little pay. I've just heard stories where they never brought in a cop for a DUI, just drove him home...If that were me my *** would be in jail (and that's a good thing IMO). How is that officer going to learn his lesson before he kills someone in that car driving drunk?

I know the DUI is a very isolated case, but how isolated? I personally don't know...I certainly hope it's not widespread, but for all I know the "Good ol' boy" network exists. I just think serious stuff like that surpasses a "perk".

        Really?
So when you hand out your little "infractions" here on O.S. every mod treats every member exactly the same?
You wouldn't give a little PM to a former/current mod or maybe one of the members you "know" a little better a little heads up that he should have been given an infraction....but your just giving him a warning?

If that's the case...than you guys are machines and deserve medals.

People.....YOU have already been given the same courtesy by officers. Sometimes you know it....sometimes you don't. If a Highway Officer sees you doing 75 in a 65 zone and lets you go....THAT is a courtesy.
Hypocritical? TO ME......that's complaining about officers "breaking the law" and getting away with it(speeding) when you do it yourself all the time.
        PLEASE

I think it was more how the guys on the site were whining, etc. Just comes off poorly, kinda like a primadonna or something. Like a rock star not getting what he wants and pitching a fit with "Do you know who I am?".

Why does that site even exist? It only gives bad PR to police officers. We wouldn't be having this discussion if that site wasn't created. I just think it's really dumb for cops to have a site where they whine because they didn't get out of a ticket. Just doesn't give off a good impression, you know?

Even so, I don't care about the speeding tickets, everyone goes 10 over, who cares?
I personally care about the serious criminal offenses, and if they let those go too. That's beyond "perk" IMO, again, just my opinion.

I'll stop this area of discussion though, cause this was more about tickets and we don't care either way there...I'm just going to assume (and hope) that serious stuff isn't regularly ignored for cops. Just wanted to clear it up that I don't hate cops, just don't want them getting away with crazy stuff either.

Well, if someone commits a criminal act and gets caught and happens to be a police officer.....and then is let go at the scene because of that.....that in itself is a criminal act.....and t ain't happening either. Stop watching so many movies if you believe that to be true. Do you really think I'm going to jeopardize my future and my families future to let some numbskull go? NOT HAPPENING.
Traffic offenses....that falls under officer discretion as do a lot of other victimless crimes(public consumption of alcohol....urinating in public....minor altercations.....teenage mischief...etc) and both uniform and civilians alike get warnings. I've done it myself so I speak from experience....and that's what the original post was talking about.

Am I more like to let an officer go with a warning? ABSOLUTELY.
Sorry. You will have to deal with that.

Edit...I almost forgot.....I agree with you about the officers complaining about receiving summonses....STOP YOUR WHINING....and THEY have to just deal with it......most times you're going to get off. If you get a hardass....too bad.....pay your ticket and move on. I've been on both sides of the river with that one also.

Apple and oranges relative the impact on community life. Officers showing special consideration happens but it is funny how some try to rationalize and justify this behavior. No, it is not the end of the world but I can see how turning a blind eye to speeding could endanger people.

I have respect for law enforcement officers but I hold them to a higher standard. They carry guns.

              Peace

                STOP.
If you really wanted law enforcement to stop every speeder and write summonses all the time....you would be VERY unhappy. Be careful what you wish for.

Funny thing, I was an MP at Fort Monroe in VA. I come home to jersey for 3 weeks March 15th to April 3rd. I am driving down 95 right by Stafford,VA a trooper comes off an exit in front of me and then drastically slows down to get behind me and pulls me over. I had a 94 camero and didnt have a license plate on the front (theres a point there and u need special brakets, etc to attach one) anyway he comes up to me I explain im coming home from leave, etc he starts telling me he used to be an MP and this and that and talk to me for about 5 minutes about all the places he went, etc. Then hes like Ill be right back lemme go run this (meaning my license) im like OK, at least he wont give me a ticket seemed like a cool guy.

Dude comes back with not 1 ticket but 3. im like wtf. he wrote me a ticket for the License plate, expired registration. which expired april 1st while i was out of state. Im like cant I get a grace period or something, hes like get it fixed and go to court maybe the judge will let you go. He also gave me a ticket for having a sticker at the top of my windsheild that said my last name. I left and rolled back to ft monroe like what a jerk that was crazy.

A few nights later Im on night shift telling my supervisor about this and I expected to get the "yeah your right screw that guy" loyalty and he admitted the guy was a jerk and he shouldnt have written me up but he was like YOU were wrong, you should have put a LP on your car, you should have re registered your car before you went on leave and you shouldnt have put that sticker on your car. Its your fault, the guy was a jerk but you are at fault. I told him i was going to go to court to see if the judge will throw it out. I really didnt know about the sticker law and I didnt know not having an LP up front was illegal i thought u just had to have 1 on the back. In VA it is illegal.

Anyway he tells me the judge will tell me "ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law" im like ok whatever, im challenging it.

A few months later in like july i go to my court date I brought the torn up sticker, my new registration, and a pic of my car with the license plate. I told the judge im in the army i was on leave, yada yada. I said Sir, I know Ignorance is no excuse fr breaking the law, I was caught being ignorant and I can assure you that this incident will definatly prevent other problems in the future. the judge asked me didnt you tell the officer you were an mp in the army I said yes I told him i was coming home on leave, etc. he looks at the cop and the cop starts looking down at paperwork like mumbling army, umm leave, sticker. lol. the judge was like Have a nice day go ahead and get out of here. So i beat the tickets but the whole situation was just stupid. I didnt feel entitled to not receiving a ticket as I was getting pulled over. Once the guy sat there and talkd with me for 5 minutes about all his stuff I then assumed I wouldnt get a ticket. I got 3.

I've just been told by cops (and read articles in the newspaper) about how some cops would just give another cop a ride home if they pulled him over for DUI. One of the cases was the chief of police getting pulled over and getting off scot free. I've seen this in real life, not movies, so I think you can understand my concern. In the case of the Police Chief, he got caught, but makes me wonder at least for the number of times it's not caught.

Honestly, I don't worry about your judgement one bit. From everything I've seen you've got a good head on your shoulders and know when to warn, etc. There are some (like the cop telling me about the DUI) that I damn well know I wouldn't trust (that dude was a total asshat for reasons aside from his job). I totally understand where you're coming from, just wanted to point out that I'm not just basing this off of a dirty cop in a movie.

And I've read articles of cops pulling over their spouses, friends, family members, fellow officers for DUI...and actually giving them tickets/arresting them. I even read an article where a cop pulled over his wife for DUI and arrested her....she was also a cop in the same department.

It's a two way street. There are cops who will pull other cops over and discipline them. However, there are also cops that will pull other cops over and do nothing. Just because you hear of a couple cops doing the latter of the two, doesn't mean every single cop does it.

Oh...I'm not saying it's never happened(or still happens)...but it's definitely not the norm. Here in N.Y.C......it just doesn't happen that way anymore. Yeah, very true and great point! Sadly we just hear all the bad things in the news nowadays. I know we shouldn't paint with a broad brush, and I don't...

99% of the officers I met were awesome guys I'd trust for anything...there's 1% of asshats anywhere you look...shouldn't speak for the entire profession.

Neither of those guys blanketly stated said they wouldn't write a ticket for every possible offense. Ten miles over the limit in parts of Virginia is 65-70 MPH while the actual speed limit in California is 65-70 MPH in most areas.

And you're actually going to sit there and be bothered by one cop giving another cop a pass on that?

It seems to me certain people are simply looking for reasons to be upset with authority, be it the police, government, or any other similar body.
I'm not a police officer. I'm not the one who is SUPPOSED to know, enforce, and especially maintain the law. You would think those who enforce it, wouldn't be surprised if they didn't get caught following it. Nonetheless, I wouldn't mind if an officer gets a break sometimes until I come into this thread and find out that it's expected behavior.

You expect me to turn around and stop a guy who has saved my life, and that I trust with my life, and write him or his wife a ticket? It's the same reason I would never write a military solider. Go join the forces, go to Iraq, and get in a few firefights. Then come back home, join the police, and go work patrol 4 days a week in the dark of the night with only your partner to count on. The you'll learn real quick why King Henry V said, "we few, we happy few, we band of brothers." The bond created is a strong one...I would lay down my life for my fellow officers. And you expect me to write one of them? I'm sorry I just can't.

hey you know what guys. I write very few citations, because where i work is so busy that we're constantly chasing the radio (meaning that there's so many radio calls we constantly are catching up to the call load), I like to see most of you guys that hate cops try to help people that probably had the most horrific thing then to them in their life. see if you could do a better job.

Understand that people don't like dealing with us because most of the time when we are call upon, it's a negative reason. they just got robbed, burglarized, raped, shot, car accident, so just a simple citation.

i have a rule for my self, i never write any tickets that unless it matters for safety. sure i've stopped people for all kinds of reasons, some what we call chicken s#it reasons, but we are doing it for your safety. We call those investigative stops. To keep the street safe for you guys.

ever been in a foot pursuit of a murder suspect, or car jacking suspect. ever been in a vehicle pursuit going 100 mph. ever chased a parolee at large with a gun. If you have then you guys would understand what brother hood means. Thats why i have the up most respect for the troops at sea.

most people that hate the police, are either taught when they were young, or they're bad guys themselves. or product of their surroundings.

don't believe everything you see on TV. You're only catching a 10 % of the story, media is their to make a story sound really bad. And some news stations are even out to get department.

And someone said they hate to see cops flick their lights on to cross intersections. when there radio calls sometimes where we can't go code 3 (lights and siren) to the call, but we want to get there to help the victim, we break the rule to get their quicker. How would you like it if we take our time.

Officer need assistances calls and back up calls, only one unit is allow to go code 3, but the rest of us want to get there as quick as we can. So we put ourselves on the line to help our brothers.
