Got a bill for about $75. Girlfriend said I should tip $25:

I tipped almost $15. What should it have been?

I usually tip 15% for average, 20% for good, 25% for great.

They just have to be willing to live with different hours than what society has deemed to be the right working hours.

It's not fair to make that assumption of all of them because it's far from the truth.
If they enjoy it and make good money then that's great. I was talking about how some say its a ****ty job and they don't make a lot of money.

You will always have some people say that in any industry, though, tips or no tips. Lot's of different variables for different industries.

You mentioned earlier that you feel a majority of them wouldn't be able to get a better job. Heck, there are a lot of college students who work these jobs that help pay for their tuition and expenses while going to school. To them, it's helping them out, not because they can't get a better job.

Not one person in this thread who has been in that industry has said that.

People who carry the perception that it is a **** job similar to what you posted have said that.

That is getting away from the discussion of tipping though, my only point was it was an extremely unfair point to take and couldn't be further from the truth.

Decent expected service gets 20% from me. If they go above and beyond 25%.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

Someone mentioned this earlier, and I forget who it was, but I delivered pizza on and off for 5 years at 3 different stores and never got a dime in mileage reimbursement. And have never known any other driver or place that pays for mileage. I'm not saying it hasn't or never happens, just saying I've never heard of it.

And to another point, I never drove anything but my trusty old Honda Civic coupe. I miss her.

I also want to add this: I'm not gonna tell anyone they are a bad person if they don't tip the pizza guy, but you should seriously ask yourself this question--Would it really kill you to throw the driver at least a dollar? Even if you just give me a dollar at least you tipped. I can't tell the other drivers that you stiffed me. And trust me, we all know the addresses who tip and don't tip. When an address comes up that doesn't tip, no one wants to take it. It might get shuffled around, get passed back to another driver. And I can guarantee you that if its being taken with another order it will be delivered last, even if its closest.

Now I'm not saying that's right, but if you take care of us, we'll take care of you.

Some of you guys are digging for any excuse to not tip or tip like a punk. Sad.

We're talking about a few bucks, man. I really don't want to judge you but if you can't part with a few bucks then get off your lazy *** and pick up your order or go to the store and cook for your damn self. Simple as that.

I really don't get what's so hard to understand that the restaurant/food service industry operates under different rules then a typical hourly job. Hope you guys feel great for stiffing your driver/server. It comes around.

I would love for servers to get paid what they deserve and not have to tip. I wouldn't mind paying more for my dish/food if that was the case. But it's not.

I'm sorry you're jaded that you got paid dirt at your fast food job or never had to work a job below you to make ends meet. You can't remember how good it felt to do a good job and be recognized for it?

Like I said, I've been a server in the past and now get paid less then I believe I should at hourly jobs. What really is the difference between you and me? You're just a cheapskate punk. Have fun eating your cold pizza or getting the third degree from your server. As you deserve. Like said, you get what you paid for. Your food and NOTHING else.

I just don't want to hear you complain when you get what's coming to you.

Classy and not an ignorant attitude at all.

At sit down restaurants, I tip 20% unless the service is bad. At bars or if I am just getting drinks 15-20% depending on service. For food delivery, it varies.

If there's one thing that I've learned it's treat the people who handle your food and beverages well.

Going back to the tipping vs paying servers more

Sure your food will be more, but you will be guaranteed to receive an appropriate level of service. If you receive terrible service, you won't be going back to that place. If it is just one person, they would be fired quickly so the restaurant doesn't lose their customers. If it is the restaurant, then it will have to lower their prices or have no customers.

Look at Chick-fil-a, you get great service because they pay more and don't put up with the normal fast food worker attitude. The food cost more, but people pack them because of that. They don't accept tips, but still give great service.

Restaurants should do the same thing and then fire or don't hire crappy servers.

Agreed here. It also applies to other industries. I worked at a car wash for my junior and senior years of high school and we made $4.26 and relied on tips. If you tipped us, the next time you came in we would upgrade your wash for free if you wanted, from a $15 wash to say a $25 or $30 wash. When we drove the car into the wash we would make sure it was as clean as it could be before getting it actually washed. On the other hand, we knew who didn't tip and we wouldn't do much with their cars, even the managers, we would just do the very basics and nothing else.

Tip people. It's not much. What is $3 or $4 extra dollars on a $15 sale? If there's bad service I understand but otherwise you're just being a cheap *** by not tipping, that and I guess you enjoy spit with your hamburger.

About sit down restaurants, the only thing that grinds my gears while I'm eating is if my drink is rarely refilled or if I have to ask to have it refilled while I'm there the entire time, this will make me not want to tip at all.

Maybe so but that's how it is. If you tip more often than not you will get service above what is expected.
