Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

    1. I was not aware of the waiters being allowed to be paid BELOW minimum wage. That's bleak. Take my topic, and just assume that everyone's at least getting minimum wage for the sake of a discussion.

TJ, I don't want everyone to get paid the same. If someone does a crappy job serving, they've earned their tip [or lack there of]. I did say I was 100% against it, but if someone does an exceptional job I have no qualms giving them a little extra.

HustlinOwl, what does having the ability to wash my car have anything to do with anything. I don't have to eat out either.. But if I did, I could literally walk back to their kitchen and fetch my own plate of food, get my own drinks etc. I could make my own food at home.. I don't get that point.

The bottom line is, for us non-ballers and struggling college students [me], every dollar is very valuable. So penciling in a tip isn't for me.. that's what I'm getting at. I'm coming in with the expectation not to tip.. but if you go above and beyond then I honestly would throw a couple bones at you.

I guess that unwritten standard has gone up? It used to be 15%.

My cell phone is set as 15% as the standard.. strange..

Places here have signs out saying automatic 18% tip added to large groups.. so that's why 15% is considered the average here

Anyhoo, pay too much tax here in NY

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

I tip frequently...probably too often and in too many circumstances. Here are a few of the things that come to mind:

            1. I always tip at a restaurant (15-20%) unless the service was lousy. I can only think of 1-2 times in my life when the service was so lousy that I didn't leave any tip.
            2. I always tip at a sporting event when the usher takes me to my seat and wipes them off.
            3. I always tip a valet at a country club or nice restaurant where valet service is provided.
            4. I always tip the bellboy when they take my luggage and deliver it to my room (vacation or on business trips).

With that said, when I was a poor college student, I didn't do #3 and #4 on my list. I also rarely sat in sections of a sporting event where #2 is applicable. So I'd only tip when going to a restaurant and that wasn't that often either.

It's status quo because we as a society are too stupid to change it. In other countries it is not standard practice to tip servers because the restaurant pays their salary, just like they should in this country. I do tip because I understand the economic realities of the situation of the server, but in the end it will be up to the government to change the minimum wage laws of servers so that they just get paid what they should. I am already patronizing the restaurant by buying their food, it is absolutely insane to further ask me to pay their employees on top of that.

I have been jaded by then in the past. I worked as a host/cashier at a restaurant in college. There were certain waitresses who would basically leave it to me to deliver the food to the table, refill drinks, and then clean up the tables because they were "too busy" (it was their job to clean the tables, we didn't have busboys), and "too busy" meant they were outback gossiping/complaining/pmsing. So there I was doing 75% of their job and getting paid the crap I got paid while they got the tip for my work. I can remember one customer realized what was going on and specifically tipped me and asked me not to share it with the waitress.

As for the amount I tip, usually it is around 15%. If they are really good they get more, if they suck they get less. There have been times that haven't tipped, but that was for horrendous service that probably warranted the server being fired.

That is propaganda that every server I know tries promulgate to the masses.

10% at lunch, 15% at dinner.

Damn, I don't think I've ever been to a sporting event where the ushers do this for me.

See that's one of the good things about living where I do.. there's a billion places to eat out and a billion people living here.. so if you didn't like the service and didn't tip, there's no way they'd remember you. Now I lived in a small town once.. and I could see where your problem comes into play.

So basically you are bribing them to not assault you at a later date.

You'd be amazed at how tight knit a community the folks in the service industry have. They know all...see all...and remember all.
