After working as a server for so long I can honestly tell you that I am a fantastic server. I always try to get to know my customers and treat each one with the same service, no matter what color or sex. However, i do work with people who do. And it bothers the **** out of me. They constantly complain about stereotypes and THINK they are going to get a bad tip right away, so they already start with crappy service.

Now, that is why I hate teenagers. I constantly serve people my age (20) and my coworkers and I always get stiffed by these kids. Regardless of service, however yesterday i had 2 of them, and treated them as i would any other guest, and surprisingly I got a 7 on 26. But i feel that because of other people my age, i can no longer go in a restaurant and get decent service.

Now, my advice to you is to just be polite. Obviously the server has no idea what you are planning tipping, so just start by askin how the server is. Trust me, it works. When the server says 'hey how you guys doin", dont just say "good. can i get a water" Answer with a good answer like, "Im doin alright today, thank you. How about you?" That is KEY. I LOVE it when a guest asks me how i am, because hell. I tell them. Create a small bond with your server. IT WORKS. Then they will feel more comfortbale around you, and treat you like a human being

I was with my girlfriend and her friend at a bar once and she was ordereing a drink. The server asked after "so what do you got for me" basically beging for a tip? My girlfriends friend leaves her some money. So we then get our drink and she asks us the same thing, we tell her nothing and walk off.
The only problem with that is if you're drinking mixed drinks, the bartenders may get soft with the liquor. I know a many bartenders that practice this. Good tippers get more booze and non-tippers get just enough to taste the liquor. The thing is to that the good tippers become even better tippers when they get drunker, so it's a system that works well for the bartender.

If you're drinking beer, then I guess your safe.

I agree it's kind of stupid, but I do it anyway. Growing up all of my friends and my wife was a server ( I never was) so I guess I've been brainwashed by them, but in all honesty, if I leave a $10 tip on a $40 tag, I know I may have made someones night.

I'd much rather give those few extra bucks to someone trying to make a living, then some panhandler on the street or someone who is in this country illegaly and is going to send that money back out of this country.

All good looking chicks who are in their late teens to early to mid twenties should wait tables.

They could all pretty much bank at a decent restaurant. Even if their service is sub par.

Another key that hasn't been brought up is that if you are known non-tipper at a certain restaurant, you are leaving the quality and content of your meal up to the person that you are stiffing...risky if you ask me. I've seen Road Trip and Waiting and know too many servers to know that these may not be people you want to upset.

True. I got stiffed on a $110 bill more than a year ago. and i can STILL remember his face and his family. I will know that whenever i see them again, i will make sure i SERVE them somethin nice. Now, nothing illegal or gross or anything. Just poor service, thats all.

I always double the tax for my tip. the tax rate is usually 8-9% so i end up paying 16-18 %. As for places like sonic, no I do not tip, they get paid minimum wage or more, so I see no need to tip them for bringing my food 20 feet. I try to tip pizza delivery people unless my food comes way later than they stated. If I am at a place that charges gratuity and the service sucks I also talk to the manager and will not pay. I also hate how they add gratuity after they charge you the tax. I know it doesn't make much difference but If the meal is 100 and they add 9% in tax and then figure out gratuity that is cheesy. i also do not tip at bars, I mean alcohol is so overly priced and it takes like 5 seconds to pop a top on my beer. No way am I paying a penny more than i need too.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

Or they need to get paid a living wage instead of less than minimum. And our minimum wage in the US isn't even close to a living wage -- it should be over $10/hr. So unless we do a Europe and pay everyone a living wage regardless of what job they do in a restaurant, then tipping is a necessity for people making their living by serving tables.

All of the people who are arguing against tipping have never worked in restaurants, I can almost guarantee it. I've never been a server, but I've seen enough of them pissed off (or crying in some cases) because they got some ******* customer or got stiffed on big bills through no fault of their own. Respect the servers... they do a hard job.

The only services I tip, are if I ever get my car washed and detailed.. I'll usually hit dude off with $3-5 depending on how well I think he did.
You are against tipping people who handle your food?

I hope you're NEVER a repeat customer anywhere you go. Because if you are, most likely these waiters will remember you.

Operation Sports is NOT a website for you to bitch and moan about sports gaming.
That's not the meaning of constructive criticism.

I hope you're NEVER a repeat customer anywhere you go. Because if you are, most likely these waiters will remember you.

                              Do you tip your barber?
I always tip my barber. Not only for the fact his cuts are always on point but the barbershop supplies me with a good amount of comedy.
