Not really... maybe the get a new job part. But if you can't afford to get tipped poorly then don't do a poor job.

Maybe I'm naive but I don't think their are that many horrendous servers in the world. Granted their are some that can be more personable and have a way with people, but if they get your order right, refill your drinks and do what you ask of them, then they should be tipped accordingly.

But what happens is you'll get a table, with a 75 dollar tab and get tipped jack squat.

I remember a couple weeks ago, I was working in the bar, a table ordered some of their food to go and some for there. The guy ordered two shots of grey goose and the lady ordered some kind of daiquiri.

Now typically, if a person is requesting a specific higher end kind of alcohol you might think they may be leaving you a good tip.

Wrong, the bill was 73 dollars, the guy handed me 75 dollars and told me to keep the change.

So now, with the busser working tonight, I need to tip out them and the bartenders. Which equals 2% of my total sales for the evening.

So on this table, after tip out, I made a whopping 50 cents.

I would admit if the service was poor on my end, their have been times I've made many mistakes with tables, and probably ruined some dinner's. But this was not one of those times.

I'd say I tip pretty well, I'm usually pretty generous but I don't use a % or anything like that. I just dont' get how a server works any harder depending on how much my food cost. Servers work equally as hard at any restaurant the price of food shouldn't affect that. I really only have a few things that are going to define whether or not my service was good. Did I get what I ordered and do I always have a drink, if those two things happen I'm a happy guy and you're going to get tipped nicely. You'd have to be awful to not get a tip from me, in fact I can't really remember not leaving one.

Now, when it comes to tipping other people, I'll nearly always tip a bartender, same with the pizza delivery guys, and I'll tip when I get a haircut.

Oh just a question for you guys who work in the restaurant biz, is it true you prefer a cash tip as opposed to one included on the check? I always try to leave cash but sometimes I just don't have any and was wondering.

One of the best tipping stories I have heard is, a couple went to a busy restraunt during the holidays and ordered a water and dessert. This couple took their time eating and resquesting several refills along the way. The waitress was becoming a little agitated as the couple did not seem to be in a hurry and she had several other big tables to wait on. In the end the couple left a $100 tip hoping to make the holiday happier for the waitress. Me and the wife have talked about doing this before, but can never seem to get the extra money around the holidays.

Any tip is def better than no tip. But I prefer cash, just because it's pretty much like under the table money. Whereas if you charge it to your credit card, it's taxed.

But in the end it evens out, at night we basically need to claim 10% of our total sales at the end of the night.

I don't think anybody disagrees with that. Nobody has a problem with bad service getting bad tips, it's more on the people who don't tip properly regardless of service.

Wow I should have read the entire thread before posting.

Would anyone seriously consider confronting their serviceman or woman with the opportunity of "losing" their tip beforehand?

Why not just start the conversation with "I want to play a game!" Some of you guys have seen way too many "Saw" movies.

I worked in a pretty average restaurant, while my girlfriend works in a better restaurant. She works harder then I did. So all this stuff about one server not working harder then another is BS. The things she has to do (and had to do to get the job in the first place) is way more then I ever had to do at my job.

The bottom line is, for us non-ballers and struggling college students [me], every dollar is very valuable. So penciling in a tip isn't for me.. that's what I'm getting at. I'm coming in with the expectation not to tip.. but if you go above and beyond then I honestly would throw a couple bones at you.

that's the thing though, most servers are also non-ballers and/or college students. I know it's been said before but servers are paid a small amount and make most of their money from tips. A lot of people are trying to support themselves through school and when people like you don't tip it's very hard.

I've worked in the food industry before and let me tell you this: If you don't tip and are a repeat customer, expect to get ****ty service and ****ty food the next time at a place at the very least. You can use your imagination for the worst.

Penciling in a tip isn't for you? I hope you enjoy that bagel that was sitting on the floor by the trash all night or the chicken that was undercooked.

I had a part-timer as a cook for a little while . . . I made 8 bucks an hour, the waitresses made about 3.25. It's legal to pay less than minimum if you can expect gratuities.

All good looking chicks who are in their late teens to early to mid twenties should wait tables.

They could all pretty much bank at a decent restaurant. Even if their service is sub par.

Guaranteed to happen with a group of guy friends lol. Always happens when we go out and get a nice, cute chick having our table.

Yea, I have a friend who refuses to tip a dude, won't give them a dime, but he'll fork over all kinds of cash if its a nice looking chick.

Don't servers get paid less than minimum wage?

Yes. Working for a company that owns restaurants has filled me in on a lot of stuff. If I remember correctly how this works out, when managers don't enter in the right tips into the back-office system, in order for the people to get paid correctly, it can throw off a restaurant's labor dollars spent in order to make up for it, which can actually bump an average above minimum wage. Talk to the folks in my company's payroll department about the headaches that causes. I work in the IT department so I don't know all of the exact details. I just know that servers don't get minimum wage and they split tips out of the pool.

As far as the topic of the thread, I tend to usually tip 20%. If I'm at a place where I'm a regular and being taken care of by the bartenders or whatever, I'll tip more. I've also had situations where I've had little too much to drink and end up giving my hot female server a generous tip. I can be a sucker for that. If the service is bad, whether it's the server's fault or the kitchen's, I'll usually just do 15%.

I've never worked in the service industry, and hope I never have to, but I can't say I understand what people go through. However, I would definitely try to work with a smile despite issues with a customer or the kitchen. You never know when someone might be a big tipper. If I'm the customer anywhere, I've always tried to put myself in the shoes of the person serving me. I try to treat them the same as I would like to be treated.
