Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
lol unfortunately I work at a TGIF.
One of the good parts is that management doesn't make us wear any kind of flare.
The sad part is, a friend of mine waited on a table of 5 or 6 teens early twenties, and they left her exact change on a 50 dollar tab, and wrote on the receipt "15 flare minimum".“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
You chose the god awful job of serving or delivering.
Why should I be punished, by having to pay extra, because you chose a job that was difficult and payed less than you needed?
Again, I'm not your dad. I shouldn't have to pay your way through college because Mr. Papa John couldn't give you your proper wage.
Why the hell was I never tipped when I cleaned movie theaters? Did you really want to go in and sit in chairs covered in popcorn, soda, cheese, etc..? Did you really want to go into the bathroom and find **** flung all over the stall, wall, or the floor? I thought I did my job well when I cleaned those horrendous messes, so where was my tip?
How the **** are you punished by tipping a few extra bucks? It's something that's not required by any means but certainly appreciated. It's showing that you enjoyed your meal and are generous of the fact that the waiter/server/driver/etc made your experience a good one.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Some of y'all are making tipping into a bigger "social injustice" than it really is. As silly as it is, tipping is an accepted part of society. Tip for good service, don't tip for bad service. And some people don't really have a choice; some people try to feed families by waiting, it's not like they can just say, screw it, the tips aren't as much as I thought.MLB: New York Yankees

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I have no problem tipping a waitress/waiter, but only in direct coorelation of how well they do their job. I don't have a minimum that I must give them. I've only done a couple times, but if the server is a complete waste, then no they don't get a tip. I'm actually a very generous tipper, but only to those servers that do their job right.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
The problem I'm seeing here is that everyone seems to be telling Double Eights that he should tip to show appreciation.
Who made it the rule that you tip to show appreciation?
I don't get that. I think that's where there's a difference in opinion here. I don't understand the concept of giving someone extra money because I appreciate their service. My mom raised me, do I tip her because I appreciate the effort she put into raising me well? Why do I have to tip servers? It's their job to serve me.
And before people go ballistic on that comment. Don't go and twist the words to make it seem like I'm being a unappreciative scumbag for suggesting they should serve me and be happy with that. It's the job they chose. You choose to be a server and that's your job.
Tipping isn't supposed to be a rule. It's supposed to be extra gratitude that is an option. Instead, from what I'm reading here, I'm being told that it's no longer an option but a requirement otherwise you're cheap. Really now? That's pretty absurd that I am now forced to show extra gratitude by handing over money. What ever happened to "thank you"?
Finally, those suggesting you should try working as a waiter or a delivery man, that's pretty low right there. That's not a fair statement. If you've had the job, of course, you'll feel that tipping is right. You wanted to be tipped. Who doesn't? You become programmed to believe that if someone appreciates your service they are supposed to hand you money. And when they don't you consider them a cheap scumbag.
That's laughable. Nah, I'll keep saying thank you because it's how I know to really appreciate someone's service. Giving them money, in my opinion, is treating them like dirt. It's the equivalent of saying, "Take this change, scoundrel, you obviously need it."
I'm not worried that people will disagree. Just know that I disagree with you. And that's pretty much how this entire discussion will go. It would be fair, however, if instead of bashing the people that don't see money as a sign of appreciation, you respect their thinking.
edit:
Ah, one more thing I forgot to highlight. Someone mentioned how tipping is an incentive for the server to provide good service.
No one sees how sad that is? I have to give someone a tip so they could do their job right? Man, I'm going to work tomorrow and not doing a thing. Then I'm telling my boss that if he wants me to do a good job he better tell his clients to start tipping me. Let's see how fast I last in the office."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Yeah, I stand with YP on this issue. He summed it up quite nicely in the above post.
Don't get me wrong though, I still tip the usual 15-20%. I'm not happy that I do it, but it's basically necessary if you want to ever go back to the same restaurant. I tend to eat at the same restaurants when I go out, and I'm not going to risk getting spit (or worse) in my food next time I eat out at one of those restaurants. If I am out of town, and the service sucks, I probably won't tip though. I'll never see them again, so there isn't any risk involved.
Which brings me to another point. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when I have to bribe people to not tamper with my food.Last edited by Double Eights; 05-11-2008, 07:38 PM.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I worked as a waiter for a few summers and you really live off your tips cause what you're paid as a hourly wage is crap. That being said since I was a waiter I'm now harder to please, cause I know how things work. For good service I'll give the standard 15% but to get more then that you've got to be very attentive and put in some work, if the service is bad I'll not give them anything. The thing with tipping from a waiter's perspective, you can be great for a table bring them everything and be timely and attentive and still not get a damned thing cause maybe the person or person's are in a bad mood or what ever. The whole thing of tipping cause you don't want your food to be messed with is really a bunch of bull, I'd say 95% of the wait staff at a place won't remember you unless you're a regular customer or were total jerk when you were there last time. If there's any chance of having your food messed with it is when you're a jerk to the waiter/waitress before your food comes out and even then it's not a likely thing to happen. To everyone who says "They don't tip at my job." they don't cause you're paid a competitive wage. If they paid wait staffers a competitive wage the price of food served at restaurants would go up and it's already over priced.Last edited by Bighoff; 05-11-2008, 08:12 PM.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
So how often would you say you tip? 50%? 90% of the time?
I don't think anyone is saying that if the waiter is a complete douche, is horrible at their job, and ruins your dinner that they should get a good/any tip. But how often does that happen? For me almost never. So unless you get bad service all the time then I don't know why people would go in expecting not to tip. It should be on an extremely rare occasion that people don't leave a tip imo.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I don't think you are paying extra money by tipping, if tipping wasn't an expected practice the food would just cost more and the waiters would be paid more.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I get what you're saying, but on the other hand, do you receive an end of the year bonus at your job? In some ways, you could equate tipping to a bonus. If I do a great job at work, my boss will recognize that and at the end of the year, he'll reward me with a few thousand dollar bonus. If I don't do well, I might not get any bonus or will receive much less. I don't think servers get that type of treatment (although I have never been one so I don't know).Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Correct. And it's why some places add automatic gratuity for parties of six or eight or more. That's because big groups of people skip out on tipping regularly.Comment

Waiting?
That movie came out like, 3 years ago and is hilarious as long as you're expecting a light comedy.
