What are some more popular high ABV beers? I want to get a sixer of something not too expensive, but also with some taste, instead of picking up the cheap liquor store high gravity drinks that make me hold my breath while I knock it back.

If you like IPAs Sierra Nevada's Torpedo is 7%+ ABV. If you can still find some, Bells' Hopslam is I think in the 9% range (was at a burger place and they had the ABV underlined on the beer board giving people a heads up).

Spaten Optimator is nice as well at 7.9%. Sierra Nevada Big Foot is good too and that is about 9%.

Tried a Victory Hopdevil tonight. Holy hell was that good. Definitely one of the best IPAs I've had.

It's so nice having a craft brewery within a 5 minute walk from my new place (Geaghan's). They've gotten hugely popular around here since they started brewing their own beer last year.

I've had two growlers of their oatmeal stout in the last couple weeks, and once this one is gone, I plan on grabbing their IPA (Captain Molly Cool), as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I got a growler of Greenflash Imperial Palate Wrecker. Pretty good IPA. Anyone had that before?

My wife and I went to Granite City on Sat and we got their beer sampler.
It had 8 different kinds of their micro brews.
Some were definitely better than others, but I really enjoyed the Broad Axe Stout.

With all the IPA talk around here I thought some of you might like to check out the IPA challenge that Paste magazine has been doing this month. Through round 2 they're down to 8 beers.

As cool as that is, the are only using traditional IPAs and no doubles or imperials, which are far superior.

As it stands, the Southern Tier is the best one of that whole bunch IMO.
