There was a definite aversion to hops among the crowd, lol. But you're right. As far as I'm concerned with Wet and Abrasive, Surly is the king of hops! Everything they touch turns to gold.

I think I was next to last in my overall score with my 3 together, but the Porter I brought finished 3rd overall (out of 24). The Unibroue and Surly weren't crowd pleasers. No skin off my back, that meant no one wanted to take what was left, and I'll have good beer for the rest of the holiday weekend.

The beer that scored the best overall was Bass Pale Ale, and that guy also brought Smithwicks and I think some kind of Stout or Guiness Black maybe? He won the overall and individual titles. I dunno, I thought the point was to introduce people to new beers that they probably hadn't tried. My brother brought a couple growlers from different places in Chicago that were really good, and one couple even brought a home brew.

It was a lot of fun, and is a great idea for something different to do for a get-together among friends and family.

No. It was a growler that he colored with the shiny gold spray paint. Then he glued it to a nice wooden base with an engraved plate. Then the top beer got an engraved glass mug, and the best overall got the same. The same guy got all 3 prizes.

I said next year, the person who finishes last overall should get a 30-pack of Blatz cans.

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread

I want to be a beer snob* now. I want to drink beer that tastes good while not having its sole purpose to get me feeling buzzed.

Bud Light just isn't cutting it anymore. I drink rarely these days, but am finding that it gives me headaches.

I need some suggestions. I have never been a fan of dark beer, but would be willing to give it a try again. I'd like something that isn't loaded with calories.

*Being a beer snob is not a bad thing... There's nothing wrong with realizing that the run-of-the-mill beers are crap. So help me out, guys.

I'm out of work and starting to pack on pounds so I'm trying not to buy/drink beer for a bit to limit what I throw on my credit card.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch you say? ****.

You must try Rumchata Liquor if you like cinnamon toast crunch.

Had several different beers this weekend along with the typical Bud Light(had to drink something to get drunk). Ranking them in order of my preference. I've had all of them before minus the Great Divide selection.

                        1. Delirium Notcturnum
                        2. Magic Hat Not Quite Pale Ale
                        3. Abita Andygator
                        4. Abita Purple Haze
                        5. The Great Divide Rasperry Ale

Cool thing about this package store in Birmingham on Highland Avenue is they sell beer by the 1/4, 1/2 and full gallon. So the Andygator was fresh and it made a huge difference.

I live in what is turning out to be the craft brewery capital of the world with most being a stones throw from my house or office. I've slowed down out of fear of liver failure. I may have gone overboard the last couple of months.

It is winter time, so stouts and porters are best this season.

My favorites of those styles in no particular order:

Founders Breakfast Stout - The heaviest of the bunch, but also the one with the most flavor. If you like coffee, then you should give this one a try. Only comes in 4 packs, but you will never require more than 4 of these in one session unless you are a raging alcoholic.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout - Not as heavy, strong or flavorful as the previous, but also a lot more accessible. A lot of "entry level" beer drinkers can start out with this one just fine. My advice on this particular brew is to let it sit for a few minutes after the pour. The undertones in the flavor really open up as this one warms up a bit.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout - The mellowest of my three stout entries, this is a specialty beer if there ever was one. Some batches are really chocolatey and others aren't. Basically a higher quality version of Guinness brewed with chocolate. I like it, but it is not for everyone.

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter - Hands down the best porter I have ever had and I am far from being a Great Lakes homer. Chances are, you will never find this in your area anyway, but it just had to be posted.

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter - By far the easiest one on my winter beer list for a novice to just pick up and drink and the only one that tastes just as good ice cold as well as when it warms up. This one doesn't even require more than a basic pour to enjoy either. If this one is too "dark" for you then you might as well stick to wine coolers.
