Re: Anyone try online dating sites?

About 6 years ago I met my Wife (just got married on Saturday) on OKCupid. But before her Tinder and other swipe apps weren't out there. But I've been on many many sites like Plenty of Fish and others. I've been around the block too many times. I tell others just to have fun. And don't talk too much on the sites. Should be 2-3 messages and then drinks. And if you don't like her. You can leave. And if you do. Maybe you can grab a bite. Date hard but also take breaks. The wallet needs to regenerate lol

Married 5 1/2 years, 3 kids (4 1/2 year old boy and twin 2 year old girls)...Met on eHarmony and worked out.

I agree with jeebs' thoughts though. I tried Match, POF, and maybe others too (this was before Tinder lol). I talked with a ton where then we'd meet for a date and it just wouldn't click. You can somewhat get to know people online and phone, but you need to meet them for real to get a feel.

It sucks, but I kinda saw it as a job and was turning through people trying to find the right one. Over time I learned to be pickier, because you're just wasting everyone's time otherwise.

I even tried Craiglist back in the day. That by far the worst idea I ever had. I remember another called local hook upz. That was the second worst of them all.

I agree with what you're saying. It can be a job. That's why I say take breaks. Deactivate your profile. Take a break. I'll always remember the weekend I hooked up with 4-5 girls in the weekend (that's how bad it was. I can't even remember SMH). As macho as it may sound. I took a long break after that.

But I'll repeat it again. Do very little talking on the sites, through text messages or phone calls. It's literally a physical attraction. 2-3 message at most. Always pay for the first few dates in my opinion. Baby steps... If you can't get pass the first drink. Work your way to the next one. Grabbing a quick bite.

Another one my wife (weird typing that lol) and I talk about and make fun of all the time. Are those stupid test. We had a really terrible rating. But we get along and have the same core values.

That says it all. You both had a terrible rating but you had gone through so many dates, you figured what the hell and still tried.

That's the way to make it work. These sites don't know anything. What they are is a way to connect.

I actually only talked to about 5 women and none of them wanted to actually meet up in person despite talking nonstop (my guess is they were 300# or had fake profiles or something) until I met my wife.

The general rule from what I've read is if the person won't meet up with you after two attempts then you need to move on. One attempt and they can't make it, well, life happens. But two attempts, you're probably being catfished.

I'm sure I was part of some girl's garbage, too. It's all about perspective.

There were some girls where we didn't click and communication ended. Some of them we talked and met up, but we didn't spark and so faded out. Others were just fun romps that never really "ended" officially, but just stopped after the newness wore off.

It's amazing to me how the venue for dating has changed so dramatically the past 10 years. Hell even the past 5 years. Using match or similar sites was like a hush-hush thing initially. Now there's apps based on location and proximity. Hell, I think everyone I know who is actively dating is using at least one internet dating service to scope the field.

Mostly because it used to be the only people who used computers recreationally were "nerds" and/or "losers" but now using computers is mainstream (phone/tablets mostly) so using apps is not considered shameful.

You're right though, it's completely changed, it used to be something you never wanted to admit that you used, now you're a weirdo if you're single and don't have a dating app on your pc, phone or tablet.

Yeah, you don't know anything until you meet someone. At first I'd talk on the phone more, and had a few hours with someone and then we met and just didn't click...total waste of chatting in that case (the chatting was fine too)....

Looks too, early on I was more open, but I had to realize what I liked and didn't and be more exclusive...tough, but helped me avoid dates with people I wasn't physically attracted to at all.

This is the mistake I see people make. They have these week long emails and two week conversations with someone, then go on a date and get confused that there's no response back.

Don't talk to anybody on the damn phone. Don't text and email for days. You don't move to text until it's the best way to organize the date instead of waiting hours for a response on the app.

Convos on the app should be short. Once someone messages you back there's mutual interest. No need to fan that flame. Get the ball rolling and meet in person.

Also, how do you all handle being in a location where there are next to no options available within like an hour radius? Last time I was on one, the best options were 2+ hours away. I'm not looking for any long distance stuff tbh.

I’m in a small town in north Georgia where I know everyone and it’s a major problem and the main reason why it’s not working. The best case scenario is that I have to drive 45 minutes to meet someone one way. That means meeting someone during the week is extremely difficult if you work till 5 or so and puts the weekend the only time you can meet up with someone.

I’ve had the best success with match not because the quality of the site as much as it just seems to be the most popular. It’s basically just like fb though so your just blindly sending messages hoping they reply. They can like you or whatever but since the cute girls get 30+ messages a day I don’t think many do that. POF around here for me doesn’t have quality girls so it’s basically just a hook up site

Small town makes these sites a no go for me. It's just too much hassle trying to meet women a couple hours away, not to mention the cost of travel for something that is no guarantee. Sucks, but it's the reality of the situation.

It’s a expensive and time consuming process when your from a small town having and you add in the driving part. I have a lot of times wasted my whole day and $50 and within 2 minutes of meeting someone knew it wasn’t going anywhere. Let’s say the date goes good enough for a 2nd date but it’s not love at first sight well she has 45 other guys trying to go on a date with her and then you can’t see her for 1 to 2 weeks because the distance. It’s not all bad and horror stories as I’ve meet a few good people I wouldn’t normally meet.
