Anybody ever have any issue with their dog constantly licking his nose/smacking his lips?

Around the first of December, Rocky got a runny nose and would lick his nose/smack his lips. He woke me up a few times in the middle of the night smacking his lips and swallowing.

I've taken him to two separate vets a total of three times. The first time, the vet said he had respiratory infection and inflammation, so they give him an antibiotic injection. That didn't seem to help, so I took him back a week later to the same vet. He said Rocky must be allergic to something in my house.

On New Year's Day, Rocky clearly wasn't feeling well in the morning. He perked up that afternoon, but I took him to another vet the next day. They couldn't find anything wrong with him, but they gave me a week supply of antibiotics and told me to give him Benadryl. They said if that doesn't work, they may have to sedate him and check his throat.

Other than New Year's morning, he acts fine. His appetite is good and he's active. But he has moments where he almost obsessively licks his nose/smacks his lips/swallows.

Anyone have tips on keeping indoor dogs warm on outdoor walks in freezing temps?

Last year was brutal, I let the little fella's fur grow for a couple months in anticipation of winter and he still couldn't handle it. We're only out for like 5-15 mins and he freezes up like his legs stop working. It's weird. This year, in addition to letting the fur grow, I got him a little dog sweater and it doesn't seem to help at all.

He wants to go out, but once he gets out there he freezes in place, i have to drag him around so he'll do his business and make sure he poops. The other day he got so bad he started yelping, tomorrow should be even worse.

I've tried throwing toys around with him before the walk to get his body temp up, but as soon as he gets out there he shuts down.

Is he just a wuss or is there something I can do to keep him stable for short time we're out in the elements?

Maybe try those gloves that go on the dogs feet? My wife bought them for our dog when we lived in Alaska. The tricky part is getting them to stay on.

Every time I think about boots on pets I get the image of goofy cats putzing around like they're hotstepping through a mine field.

I wanna force him to just tough it out, but it breaks my heart when it seems like his legs are shutting down, especially if he yelps. But damn, it's 10 minutes outside, can it really be that bad? I miss big dogs. Don't get me wrong, I love the little guy, he's a great apartment dog, but cmon man, it's 10 mins.

My friend jokes that I should find a battery operated hair dryer and blow the heat at him the whole time on his walk lol, he'd be the most spoiled pet in the world.

Only time that's ever happened with my dogs has been when one of them cut her lip. Her lip was hurting a little and there was nothing she really could do but lick it. It went on for a few hours then stopped. Sounds like you've got a different situation unfortunately.

I took my dog on a ski trip one time and encountered the same thing. I'd put her in the snow and ask her to do her business and she just stood there. She'd pee, but that's it. Eventually I got her to go by playing with her inside to get her happy and then pretty much taking a jog with her through the ski village I was in. She would run with me and eventually she couldn't hold it in any longer dropped a bomb right in the middle of the sidewalk which quickly froze to the concrete making it impossible to get all of it up.

This was a photo from that trip, she was not happy!

I have a beagle who had mild seizures from time to time and one of the things he does is lick his lips excessively when he thinks he's about to have one.

What type of dog is Rocky?

He's a Cocker Spaniel with a bit of Golden Retriever in him.

Frustrating, because for the most part he's fine, but a few times per day he'll lick his nose and smack his lips for a few minutes. So something is clearly bothering him, but we don't know what. He seems to be doing a bit better the last few days, so maybe the antibiotics are working.

Anybody got any dog food they swear by? I'm looking to switch from Blue Buffalo to see if that helps Rocky's allergy issues.

It has to made in the U.S. or Canada. Thought about trying Orijen, but that's probably too expensive. I'm going to give Canidae the first shot.

I used Natural Balance limited ingredient food and it helped my dogs allergy problems. They use ingredients that dog foods don't normally contain so allergic reactions are minimized. My dog loved the Sweet Potato and Venison and the Sweet Potato and Bison.

So Rocky is on some new medication for his issue with licking his nose/smacking his lips. One of the side effects is he's drinking about twice as much water as usual, which leads to ... well, you know.

Wasn't able to make it home at lunch yesterday to let him out. Came home after work and he had gone ... on the throw rug in front of the toilet. Can't be upset with that.

Went in late today because I had a dentist appointment, so again I wasn't able to make it home at lunch to let him out. And again, he went on the throw rug in front of the toilet.

Now if I can just teach him how to stand on his hind legs when he pees, I'll be set.

Lol, he's trying to use the toilet!

I have a house full of either hardwood floor or tile and the dogs always seem to find a rug to go or throw up on, drives me nuts. Luckily it is a very rare occurrence.

I'm usually not a big advocate of puppy pads, but it sounds like they would be useful for you on days where you know you won't make it home for lunch. It seems he has a place where he likes to go so just put them there and it should save you a lot of clean up.
