Re: The first time you dunked

My first time dunking was in 8th grade Future League lay up line . I was 5'8" at the time, barely 6'1" now.I usually just lay the ball up in front of the rim, but this time i got some extra lift and slamed it by accident.

During High school, I was dunking with ease, set plays for me to get me an Alley, then i tore up my knee at the end of my Junior year.

During Maryland tryouts, I caught Nik Caner Medley under the baskest after an in and out move on DJ Strawberry. Not my flashiest dunk but the most rewarding one

Re: The first time you dunked

Still remember it like it was yesterday.

I was 13 years old, AAU tourney at Cheshire Academy in CT, sunny afternoon, middle of May. In AAU back then refs didn't give an eff if you dunked during warmups, plus we were in the u14 division so most people weren't dunking at that age. We had four dudes on our team who were all real close but no one had dunked yet, tons of attempts flying off the back rim and what not.

So in warm up lines one dude finally threw it down and got all fired up, then another dude did. Everyone had the adrenaline flowing and I was next up and sure enough I got up and threw it down with one hand. I was 6'4 at the time. Eventually the 4th kid on our team dunked a few weeks later, we were giving him major **** for being the only one not to pop his cherry during the layup lines that day.

I'd rather talk about my best block because dunking isn't for me (5'10 white lineman in hs). David Hoskins (Kansas State) played at my rival hs 4ish years after me and we were playing at a local court he came into the lane and called a foul on someone else. I told him he was lucky he called the foul because I was gonna block that. He didn't appreciate the comment, but the game moved along. Later he came into the lane and I blocked him somehow. He just laughed and jokingly called a foul. Play had aleady moved on so I was the only one who heard him.

Re: The first time you dunked

I remember when I was in 11th grade being able to dunk a girls basketball from time to time during practice in high school (we had to share the court with the girls team the first half hour of practice. I was about 6'1", I stopped growing at 6"2".

I could dunk at the park sometimes but those rims where probably a bit lower. Never dunked in a game but I remember my first year out of high school I was an assistant coach for the JV team and I was messing around before practice and threw down a few dunks, I sort of surprised myself cause my dunking was always so sporadic. I remember one of the players being all impressed.

I'm 26 now and about 3 weeks ago I decided to get back into playing ball after about a year of not playing, my jumping was bad (I could barely touch the rim). I've been working out with the goal of being able to dunk again so this is an awesome thread.

You guys are totally right, there are few feelings like dunking. I remember I always had a hoop in my drive way, one of those adjustable ones. So it was always fun bringing it down to where it was dunkable.

Ok so yesterday I had a breakaway and honestly this thread made me want to dunk. I missed and felt like a fool. Man it was just one of those days where nothing would fall for me.

However, I blamed it on a jammed finger. Clearly missing the dunk wasn't ME, it had to be something else.

That's funny because actually. . .I was largely just a "practice dunker" in high school. I switched to being strictly a two-foot dunker after my sophomore year and subsequently got hammered or lost my footing anytime I tried to take-off of two feet and dunk in a game. It wasn't until I was assisting with a Girl's JV squad that it all came together.

One team destroyed my girls' JV team by sending an early release downcourt and rebounding and chucking to that release for an easy layup, so we worked on it in the next practice. I was that early release in practice, so I kept getting outlet passes with people chasing me and I was taking off of one foot and laying them in. Then one moment, it all just suddenly clicked, like when Doc Brown came up with the Flux Capacitor. It suddenly became natural to dunk on those breakaways, without even really giving it a second thought. And that was my breakthrough.

The connection made at practice that night was seamless as I moved back into "real" games (i.e. not girls JV practices). I started dunking everywhere, almost exclusively off one foot. One of the biggest and best changes I've ever made to my game was reestablishing my ability to run as fast as I could and then taking off instantaneously for the dunk. Whereas before I had to worry about creating enough space between me and my defender so I could jump off two feet and throw-down (which almost never happened) I now knew I could flush in an array of situations; all I needed was the slightest opening to build any sort of momentum.

The whole point there I guess is I thought it was interesting and coincidental that we both honed our dunking skills as assistant JV basketball coaches.

Re: The first time you dunked

I can't dunk, didn't get my growth spurt until late (stopped growing at 19, I'm 6'2 now), and I just don't have the hops.

I do remember my brief moment of awesomeness in high school gym basketball where I completely crossed a guy over and pulled up for a sky high rainbow 3. Otherwise I'm just a hustle guy on D for basketball, I can cover people pretty well but that's about it.

I'm 6'8, got the rents to thank. Dad is 6'6, mom is 5'11.

I was so damn skinny and weak back in day though which is why I couldn't dunk until I was 6'4. I was always very coordinated but a stiff breeze would knock me over and I had zero muscle mass. When I graduated HS I was 6'8 and about 185 lbs, I couldn't even bench plates (135lbs) once, it was pathetic. Definitely the biggest reason why I didn't get any DI bball offers and fell down to DII. Late bloomer, what are you gonna do? I finally stopped growing and started filling out when I was 20 or so, I'm at 235 these days and can bench around 255, makes me happy.

My future son (lord willing) is probably gonna kill me because my future wife (also lord willing) is 5'3.

That's the exact height of my mom and dad. I only turned out be 6'5". I always had good handles and a nice shot, but was relegated to playing in the post because I was taller than everyone else. If I had height like that, I might've been something. I had a few DII and DIII offers, but the DII's were partial and that didn't interest me. So I went to a JuCo and played for 2 years then transferred to Texas. Looking back, I wished I would have at least tried to walk on.

Not to knock you but it's funny that everyone always says that. I say if I had three more inches and was 6'11 I'd be in the NBA (which I probably wouldn't be). My 6'3 college roommate/teammate always says if he was 6'6 he'd have gone DI. I get random dudes playing pick up with me at the gym saying "If I was 6'8 I'd be in the NBA". It's just funny how everyone says that.

Also, I feel your pain on being stuck in the post simply because of height. It still happens to me all the time in the adult leagues I play in. I've always been a perimeter oriented player and I'm a very good outside shooter. I still rebound and block shots on D but on offense I'm way more comfortable, and more effective, on the perimeter. I love when adult league teammates who don't really know me give me **** for not posting up, then I hit seven threes during the game and they quiet down.

That sucks, but happens all the time. 6'5 makes you pretty tall for high school and whatnot, but for you to survive in college or pro you'd have to be playing guard instead of forward...
