I used to never even realize how backwards it was. I just said it because that's what everyone else said and what I learned to say.

It's one of the dumbest expressions in American English. It's up there with "it's the least I could do". Don't understand that one either.

Also, I've always felt funny about, "You can't have your cake and eat it too." That actually makes sense to me, as in, I'd have the cake in my possession, then I'd eat it. I've used "You can't eat your cake and have it too" because there I wouldn't be able to have the cake, because I just ate it. Though, that raises the question, if I ate the cake, didn't I have it at some point? Or would that just mean I couldn't have it anymore after I ate it, because I ate it?

The phrase is SUPPOSED to be, "You can't eat you cake and have it too." Whenever I say that to folks they are always confused.
        Concrete evidence/videos please

That's a universal phrase. Pretty much the same phrase exists in my native language.

So basically, it's "better" to limit yourself to random in-person meetings? For some people due to work schedules makes that near impossible.

What is the ultimate goal? To please a few people (who have no vested interest) or to find a relationship partner....

I'd be more embarrassed to say I met my gf/wife at a club or bar than online.

If you are an insecure person and put a lot into what others think of you, you might be embarrassed. If you are comfortable with who you are and the woman or man you met online, you may not care as much. My buddy did the online dating thing and had a couple different dates with girls every week or so. The only thing that struck me odd about it was that I assumed it was for the older crowd and he was only 22 or 23 at the time...but he proved me wrong.

I met my wife on IRC 10 years ago. Haven't ever had a problem telling people about it, though i always had to do some explaination of what IRC was/is.

I met my wife online. We dated for 18 months, got engaged, been married for two years. I never felt embarrassed to tell anyone we met online. It didnt seem any different to me than someone meeting their wife/husband at a grocery store, park or bar.

Honestly I think I'd be more embarrassed to admit I met my spouse at a bar than online.

Yep... I don't have any problem telling anyone. I think it's becoming more socially acceptable in today's world. My wife and I are compatible in so many different ways, and the type of girls that were normally hitting on me, were the type that weren't exactly "relationship material". This way, it gave me a chance to meet someone inside prior to getting to the physical part. We are the typical eHarmony "commercial" couple.
