re: OS Fine Spirits Appreciation Thread

Getting old sucks. Had a weird/annoying development over the last couple of months - drinking any amount scotch gives me a headache within a half an hour and a pretty solid hangover the following day.

Hadn't drank any booze in about a month, had one glass of Caol Ila 12 neat on Friday night and had a headache until about 2pm on Saturday. Just terrible. Wonder if I developed an allergy to something.

I haven't drank bourbon in probably two years so I don't if that'd cause a headache as well. Might have to test it out.

Summers won't be the same without a scotch & cigar.

Damn I sorry to hear that. Nothing like sipping on bourbon or a nice rye whisky after a hard day at work. I hope the bourbon doesn't have the same effect on ya

I know there's talks over the difference between whiskey vs whisky but i've been recently going through my different stages of drinking (hard liquor -> mixed -> beer -> wine -> whisky(ey) aka GETTING OLD!!! lol ). Currently only enjoy 1 pilsner, most red wines and different brands of whisky(Makers Mark, Hennesy Pure White, Macallan 12, & Yamazaki 12).

I always enjoy Xmas parties because that's when i have a tasting experience with a bunch of coworkers and it gets fun.

In december it was a newly opened bottle of Yamazaki 12 and seriously it was the best drinking experience i've ever had. Next morning I woke up with no hangover since I didnt mix throughout the night just very hungry.

Macallan 12 was an option at a Fund raiser and that can give me a good hangover but it has a great taste.

Hennesy Pure White is usually available throughout the year since friends of mine travel and i tell them to buy me a bottle and I pay them for it. Ran out of that in November .

I know it's wrong to sometimes get it on the rocks but I feel like the experience is better and you get to enjoy the taste. Better is to just have the bottle(s) chilled imo.

How does everyone enjoy it, straight or on the rocks?

I usually have it chilled. Occasionally on the rocks just because I like my liquor cold. When I drink it on the rocks I usually drink it faster before it melts.

I usually drink mine neat, but I've been meaning to buy a set of whisky stones or get one of those oversized ice cube molds.

Drink whiskey neat is the only way I'll drink whiskey, any kind of whiskey. I don't like my whiskey colder then room temp, if you do the stones are the way to go. Ice will water it down, unless that's what you're wanting. I had a bartender server me a double Jack D. and the bottle was in the fridge or something, I wanted to throw the drink in his face.

Sipping on some lovely JD Single Barrel tonight/this morning.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

In theory I still have some JD Single Barrel packed away in a shed in the backyard. Been two years, think it's any good? Bottle has been previously opened.

I drink scotch neat with a splash of water and always out of a Glencairn glass if possible.

I always brushed off the notion that a glass type/shape could improve your drinking experience but I was shocked when I had my first Laphroaig Quarter Cask out of a Glencairn. It was pretty remarkable how it enhanced the smell/taste.

For bourbon I'll usually throw in a cube or two to make it less sweet. Not nearly as snobby about my bourbon as I am my scotch though and rarely drink it these days.

Just check it to make sure there's no mold floating around in there and you should be good.

The difference between whiskey and whisky is really where it's made. There are really good whiskeys and whiskys so I don't think it's really much to even pay attention to unless you're a snob for a region. Had some amazing Japanese whisky... wish I could remember the name.

I like my drinks cold so I'll always do on the rocks. It's best if they have a whiskey cube but I don't mind cutting it with a little water (melted ice) if I'm drinking it straight anyway.
