I almost drank a whole bottle of GJ on Halloween (some with coke, some on the rocks). Needless to say, I didn't feel too great the next day.

Tonight I think I am going to buy a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Been reading good things in this thread, so Ill see what its about
I wish Buffalo Trace was around here. I've looked up and down Maine and haven't been able to find any. May just need to order some.

And yes, I agree that GJ is smoother than Single Barrel. I bought a shooter of Single Barrel a few months ago in New Hampshire, and I recall it being much harsher than GJ. Some people may like that, and i'm sure it's still good with a drop or two of water. But I can drink GJ neat without issue.

The original has never set well with me, so I won't drink any of the other Jack Daniels related stuff..

This thread has me wanting to venture out and buy something different from the state store, tomorrow. I've been complacent with this 100 proof Captain and an assortment of draft beers from different restaurants and bars.

That's why I started going for the top shelf whiskeys. I got sick of the same old routine of Jack and Coke and a random sixer of Sam Adams. I decided I might as well start trying different things, such as drinking liquor neat. It's actually quite an experience when you try to get different flavors and aromas out of a really well made whiskey or scotch.

Doesn't mean i'm going to give up on beer or the lower end stuff, because I don't have the money to buy a 30 or 40 dollar bottle of whiskey every other week. But it's nice to have around when I just want to kick back and relax.

I drank a $100 bottle of Glenlivet 18 couple weekends ago. Amazing scotch. Loved the fruity hues and extremely rich & smooth finish. One of the best scotches I have drank.

I haven't had it but judging by the reviews it looks to be a decent scotch for the price. I would for sure throw it neat in a glass and give it a go. If it is slightly a little harsh for your taste, add a little mineral water to cut the kick slightly. But overall it should be a wonderful drink.

hell, I'd add a little water regardless as imo it helps open up the taste.

Ice on the other hand is a big no no to me. I used to do it this way as I just assumed this is how you were supposed to drink it, but since trying different things, I came to realize that ice actually made it worse to drink. The chill kills the flavor and all I notice is the burn and it completely takes away any smoothness the drink has. To each their own, but for anyone that does have whisky on the rocks, I'd suggest you don't be afraid to experiment. Replace the ice with some room temp mineral water and give it a shot.

Pretty funny this thread popped up as I actually had some Glenlivet 15 last night (lately I've been trying a glass or two of different higher end whisky's when I go out) and it was pretty good, although it didn't hold up as well as I'd hoped over a second glass. But definitely better than the run of the mill stuff I usually have lol. The 18 seems like it would be more of my style though, perhaps I should treat myself to a bottle for christmas and crack that open one of these days the whether turns sour (nothing like a nice bottle of whisky on a cold crappy night!)

I had some Highland Park 12 year last night and overall I wasn't that impressed. I can see why other people might like it, but the smokey/peaty finish just isn't for me. It does what it does very well, and has a pretty good balance, so if you're a fan of that style I'd give it a shot.

Now I'm drinking some Balvenie Doublewood 12 year right now, and I must say, it is one of my favorites in the 50 dollar range. First off it has a fantastic nose with some great hints of vanilla (which I love). The initial taste is very creamy, sweet (the sweetness you notice right away but it fades quickly), with a good balance between a nutty/oak/bitter citrus... its hard to put my tongue on it, but overall, smooth and not overbearing imo.

The finish is short and there isn't a ton of flavor, which again I'm ok with. You'll notice the slightest hint of the sherry here, a little spicy, and dry but overall its not too strong. The warmth however stays with you longer than the flavor, which again is something I'm quite fond of (as opposed to the Highland, which for me had too strong of a finish and not as much of that "warm whisky" feeling).

For someone whos not a big whisky drinker, but wouldn't mind splurging for a nicer bottle once in a while, I'd give the Belvenie a look. It's a very easy but good whisky imo.

So i'm planning on using some Christmas money to purchase a nice bottle of scotch for myself. I want it to be one of those special occasion drinks, so preferably aged longer than 12 years. I'm definitely intrigued by the Glenlivet 18 you mentioned Phobia.

For under $100, what are my best options? If I had the extra dough, i'd give the Johnnie Walker Blue Label or Macallan 18 a shot, but I can't justify the expense. I will say, i'm more into the lighter bodied Speyside's, although I haven't really ventured into the heavier, smokier single malts.

Also, I got a fifth of Balvenie (sp?) last year for Xmas and loved it. Problem is that liquor is so expensive in Washington.
