For under $100, what are my best options? If I had the extra dough, i'd give the Johnnie Walker Blue Label or Macallan 18 a shot, but I can't justify the expense. I will say, i'm more into the lighter bodied Speyside's, although I haven't really ventured into the heavier, smokier single malts.
    age doesn't always = quality

honestly, if you like the lighter Speysides, you'd prolly be better off with a 12 year as the older the whisky, the darker/heavier it prolly is. And I wouldn't recommend throwing down a c-note for your first venturing into the heavy/smokey side, as there's a good chance it will be a huge waste of money for you.

Find a good quality 12-15 year speyside and you should be plenty happy imo

I almost drank a whole bottle of GJ on Halloween (some with coke, some on the rocks). Needless to say, I didn't feel too great the next day.

Tonight I think I am going to buy a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Been reading good things in this thread, so Ill see what its about
Gentleman Jack is filtered twice, that's probably why it tastes smoother then the Single Barrel. I'm the opposite I love the Single Barrel best, the taste of that lone whiskey not blended with others is just the best. Now a Single Barrel of Gentleman Jack might just be the best damned thing ever. I'm off to email the idea to the distillery.

That's not to say that I don't want to try a heavier style scotch. I assume that if properly aged, it will go down extremely smooth anyways. I've got access to some of the more common scotches available, so I was looking at making the 45 minute or so trip South to the Global Beverage Warehouse. I know they carry some rarer liquors than the ones I have readily available in my area.

I don't mind dropping the extra to try something different to expand my cabinet, as dropping a little extra on whiskey isn't something my wife does all the time .

haha, its up to you man, I'm just saying its a risky business dropping money on a style you've never really had before. And those smokey/peaty heavier styles are not for everyone (myself included).

From my experience (which isn't the most, but I'm working on it lol) there are plenty of good 12 year olds as good if not better than even their older siblings.

Now, if you could find a sample pack that has a little bit of everything, that would be a good bet... I know there's a Belvenie sample out there with the 21 port, 12 doublewood, and 18 I believe (didn't have it at my store unfortunately). For 15 bucks, you could figure out what you like and then drop the real money for more.

My father brought a bottle of Makers Mark 46 in for Christmas and it was spectacular. Highly recommend it.

Any of you guys like Drambui? I don't always drink whiskey, but when I do, its drambui. lol. Im not a huge "drinker", I always say I have the pallet of a 12 year old. Lately Ive been drinking more adult beverages, and Drambui has been my "man drink". My father in law is really into drinking, and the type of dude that gets pleasure out of getting me destroyed and at the toilet lol. In any case, he recommended Gentleman Jack for me. I was thinking of getting the Glenlivet and giving it a try but he seems to think Im not ready yet.

Any thoughts on Gentleman jack and does it compare to drambui? I drink Drambui pretty easily with a few ice cubes.

Based on your review on that Balvenie 12 year doublewood, I think I am going to give this one a shot AlljuicedUp.

Really wanting to step up my bourbon game this winter. I've revisited all of the various bourbons I've collected over the last couple years and have found a new appreciation for them. Woodford Reserve, Basil Hayden, Elijah Craig 12, Buffalo Trace (probably my favorite).

If I could find a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 12 yr around here, I'd grab it in a heartbeat. But its impossible to find. I might grab some Blantons instead.

I only started drinking Whiskey recently, and so far Crown has been my definite favorite, with Gibson's coming in a distant second. Only bad experience so far has been when I was trying to finish a bottle (had about 4 oz. left), poured it in a glass and slammed it back. Everything smelled and tasted like Crown for a few days afterwards.
