This is gonna be one of those things, I have a feeling, where most everyone will remember where they were when they first heard/saw what was happening. This type of destruction in such a highly populated area is unimaginable.
Agreed. And living in California, something like this can happen here very, very easily so it's definitely terrifying.

They're passing out potassium iodide to those directly around the potential radiation leak, just in case.

I was 5 when it happened, so obviously I don't know much about what happened outside of history books....

Is this nuclear plant problem drawing any comparisons to Chernobyl?

yes radiation is leaking out, but nothing major has happened yet

Shouldn't be. Nothing like Chernobyl will happen.

Experts have already said that there is absolutely no chance of a meltdown occurring because the facilities have been turned off. That continious cooling is no longer required. Only sufficient one time cooling to bring down the surface temperature of the reactor.

Lol Jim Walsh is a Nuclear Reactor expert, come on CNN

Correct. I haven't been watching CNN for this exact reason, but the extent of the "disaster" is the localized radiation dose received by those immediately near the plant during the disaster, those who will have to fix the issue, and possibly the initial medical folks who treated contaminated workers.

The other issue is airborne contamination. With the explosion, there had to be contamination that became airborne and will emit radiation for years to come. And really, in all likelihood, its not going to be enough to have to worry about. Its nothing new compared to what is going on all over the world (there are nuclear buildings being D&D'd all over the world that release airborne contamination).

There is most certainly still a chance of meltdown, a small chance but it still can happen. They have turned the reactors off, but they haven't cooled them yet. If they don't get them cooled, then a meltdown can and will happen. They may be able to contain the radiation within the containment building, but they won't know until something happens because of any structural damage from the earthquake.
