Re: Japanese Earthquake and Tsunamis (Pacific Warnings)

Washington is still just under a watch as far as I know. It's mostly expected to hit Oregon and California. Even if it were to hit Washington, and even though I live in a town near the coast, my area should be safe do to elevation.

Ok here's what I am hoping, being someone who is in the industry.

I know that the reactor were shut down, so the intensity of the possible accident will go down a lot.

These guys are smart, I can tell you that I'm 100% sure that containment is set to prevent the release of radiation to the enviroment.

No warning sirens overnight. It shouldn't be a major event here. Very precautionary right now. They closed the Great Highway near my house and shut down Bart trains.

I just took a look at the ocean this morning, from the corner, and it looks a little different. Waves are breaking a little further out than usual without consistency. I'm gonna look again in about 15 mins.

It's low tide when it hits. So if anything it might hit the sea wall.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those in Japan.

From what i've heard unless I heard wrong is that the problem is the nuclear materials would warm up because the reactor is turned off. The reactor is what keeps the material cooler.

Re: Japanese Earthquake and Tsunamis (Pacific Warnings)

According to CNN analyst, the reactors within the earthquake zone all behaved pretty well and did what they were designed to do in terms of protection against big earthquakes like this one...

...except for the one, that is still not cooling down like it is supposed to.

That could be possible, I'm not sure how their reactor was designed but if that's true then the worst case scenario that could cause bad stuff, but like I said unless they have structural damage, radioactivity should not be released.

They use water in the core as a moderator, so nothing like Chernobyl will happen, as the water keeps getting hotter, it will actually take the power lower.

So fuel melting and open relief valves or structural damage would be worst case scenario.

But it has to get really really hot for the fuel to melt, much hotter than if they were operating at power.

Crazy, Santa Cruz taking damage in a harbor. Boats are getting dislodged and sinking. A lot of boats have been damaged. The swells are crazy.

One of my good friends moved to Japan with his wife about a year ago. He lives near Tokyo and says it is absoutely insane down there right now. I can't even imagine the destruction.

You get those kind of people everywhere whenever there's dangerous weather or whatever. I remember seeing video of a guy in Florida who had the brilliant idea of kite surfing during a hurricane and got slammed into a building.
