I don't get how there are only 10,000 feared dead. How's that possible?! Entire cities were ****ing leveled.

Well with a fault line like that can't say it's surprising, but the timing wow.

Goodness gracious me! This is worse than any disaster movie Hollywood could think up. I can't believe how every possible worst case scenario is being played out over there.

Mt. Fuji is overdue for an eruption. I can easily see that happening at any time now.

                        Re: Japanese Catastrophies

Looks like the death toll will surely exceed 10,000, maybe even 100,000, though that may be a stretch.

I think it's safe to say that this is the worst natural disaster ever seen in the First World during modern history. Sure, we've had the Indonesian Tsunami and other disastrous events in the Third World in the last century, but this is by far the worst disaster in the industrialized world, IMO.

No surprise that a volcano or two erupts...they are all tapped into the fault lines..a major event like this can cause volcanic activity along tectonic plates.

While this isn't over yet, the Indonesian tsunami killed over 250k people. Japan has a very good tsunami warning system so it surely has saved many thousands of lives. And a good reminder that instead of cutting funding for the one we have, it might be a good idea to actually take a look at improving it.

There was an article the other day about Japan being the first real test to see if the program thats been in place will indeed work as intended.

I think Japan may even be the ones who are the leaders in natural disaster safety and response with the teams they have set up and routinely practice.
