Well, it's a matter of semantics but by saying they couldn't care less they are literally saying they don't care at all. If they had any care at all, even if it was just a little, they could care less. The only way to not have an opportunity to care less is to not care at all.

That's why people get annoyed when people say "I could care less" to mean the same thing you mentioned.

Edit: Actually as I thought through this (I'm bored tonight), I'm inherently wrong and you're right. This has been discussed frequently in the "grinds your gears thread" but more to the angle of people who say they "could care less."

But it isn't impossible for someone to say they couldn't care less while still caring to a degree.

    Interesting web we weave.

"Couldn't care less" is the proper grammatical statement when you don't care about something at all.

        I could care less about this ... I could, but I won't. Actually, I wouldn't, even if I could.

I'm in the "I couldn't care less" is correct camp. It implies that you care so little about something that you could not care one iota less.

Saying "I could care less" means something else could be even stupider than what you're talking about.

I always felt that there was still a little care in that saying but I have no problem being wrong. I don't like either....just say I don't care. Lol

Funny had this discussion with a few friends a few weeks ago and it was split, remember now it being said that I couldn't care less was correct and I could care less was definitely wrong. One friend even used what if someone said I couldn't eat less it means they ate a little something.

Will leave it alone and not derail the thread but thought about it after reading the replies. heh

Oh I agree that "I couldn't care less is the "accepted" meaning for not caring at all. It makes sense to me and that's the way I both take it and use.

This is what I'm getting at, if you wanted to get SUPER technical about something REALLY dumb.

Saying I couldn't care less could in theory mean I care a little but not enough to really give it a second though or to care much about it.

                Case in point:

I live in Pittsburgh, technically I wanted the Penguins to lose, but ultimately as a fan of the Avalanche (eliminated already) I literally couldn't have cared less if they went on to win their third cup as it has no meaning or bearing on me at all.

Re: Most annoying words, terms, phrases

I always figured most people knew the technically correct definition but intentionally said it wrong because "I COULD CARE LESS!" comes off more emphatic.

it more cooler too not be grammer correct NEways
