I don't think that's new at all.
I mean, I don't feel like there have been enough times in my life to have said that exact phrase to others myself, but watch enough movies or play The Last of Us and you'll probably hear this.
By the way, you don't necessarily have to take "mask" as a verb here. Maybe they're literally saying: "Put your mask up." After all, "Hands up" means exactly that.
Which is why I always didn't like the phrase "Heads up!" That one is not meant to be taken literally, as that one should probably be "Heads down!" if you want to do that. Yes, I know it means to raise your awareness, be alert and cautious, or sometimes brace yourself for some potential impact... but our language can certainly be complicated.
In which case, I don't really have a problem with the initial phrase you presented, even if it was new. Maybe you're just sick of the virus itself and you wish it wasn't such a commonplace thing we had to do?
