    I don't think that's new at all.

I mean, I don't feel like there have been enough times in my life to have said that exact phrase to others myself, but watch enough movies or play The Last of Us and you'll probably hear this.

By the way, you don't necessarily have to take "mask" as a verb here. Maybe they're literally saying: "Put your mask up." After all, "Hands up" means exactly that.

Which is why I always didn't like the phrase "Heads up!" That one is not meant to be taken literally, as that one should probably be "Heads down!" if you want to do that. Yes, I know it means to raise your awareness, be alert and cautious, or sometimes brace yourself for some potential impact... but our language can certainly be complicated.

In which case, I don't really have a problem with the initial phrase you presented, even if it was new. Maybe you're just sick of the virus itself and you wish it wasn't such a commonplace thing we had to do?

It does have a bit of that ...social media marketing trying to relate to younger people quality to it. Like when a twitter account for a fast food place will try to act cool replying to joke tweets. "Please wear a mask" works for me.

Nauseating. Let's make masks cool. Sure. It's up there with giving elementary aged children "fun" exercises involving masks (coloring, poems, etc.). "Normalize".

Yet, this simple request doesn't work for many other people. People are crazy.

Okay, let's move on from the "mask up" topic

What really annoys me is the use of words to mean something completely different or unrelated to what they actually mean.

Re: Most annoying words, terms, phrases

I can't stand this trend of starting explanatory sentences with "so". Seems like it started 5-10 years ago and has steadily increased in frequency. I mean...why? Just start saying whatever it is you were going to say after "so".

                  C'mon man.

As for me, I'm guilty of saying "I'll be honest with you right here" and such other unnecessary prefatory statements.

Random musing I had the other day: I love how people can start an answer with "yeah, no, ....." or "no, yeah, ...." and it sounds perfectly legit, even though you just used two words which completely nullify each other. I guess I'll speak for myself here; it sounds perfectly normal to me, yet it is kind of amusing when you think about it.

I kinda like "you love/hate to see it" but I have a feeling this will wear out its welcome. Then I'd just be that guy using a tired old phrase. You hate to see it.

what I hate the most about being called a boomer is I'm a gen-x'er.
I just hate being caught in the middle of the Boomer-Millenial War in general.
I feel like I'm so much collateral damage lol

My sense of the generations is still the one that formed in my childhood. I think of Boomers as being 40s-50s, Gen X as young adults, Millennials as the youth, and Gen Z as babies. When I see someone born in the 2000s I'm like "...you're not a baby!?" Alas, we're all old now.

What I always think of is that boomers were the ultimate millennials/GenZ back in the day. They originated the whole thing in the 60s lol. Whatever that thing even is. Now they are the ones seen as disapproving of people doing things differently . But they were the Easy Rider generation. Idk.

It's not an annual event until you've had two of them, a year apart.
