I guess Im lucky that I have my metabolism. Im 6'1 150lbs and couldnt gain weight to save my life. I eat horrible and should weigh 300lbs and I dont work out. Im such a horrible example to live by but I am trying to change but its hard when you dont have any noticeable effects from not eating healthy and working out. I guess Im just really lazy.

      I couldn't give up meat...

I love chicken and beef too much.

I eat chicken at least three times a week.. usually baked or grilled.

That's me all over, except you've got 2 inches on me (pause). I get something of a workout from my job and it's probably helped some, but my metabolism is crazy high too and, at age 30, I've only been over 160 once or twice in my life. It might be starting to slow down though because I'm starting to get a bit of a gut.

^^^ I'm jealous of you guys. I can put weight crazy fast if I don't watch my diet like a hawk. I guess you have to take the good with the bad because I can put on muscle pretty fast as well but it's a constant battle to get /stay lean.

Re: This country is dying a slow and painful death health wise.

I used to be like the majority of uneducated Americans and would say things like, "Oh, I could never be a vegetarian." or "I just love meat too much." or my favorite, "I wouldn't get enough protein if I didn't eat meat anyway!"

I have now been a vegetarian for four years and it was easy as **** to convert.

I can't stand when people say they could never do this, or never do that when it is something that millions of people are already doing. Of course you CAN, you just choose not to. It's all about willpower and anyone who cannot keep bags of pork rinds, Big Macs and 2 liter bottles of Coca-Cola out of their mouths because they say they CAN'T STOP is a weak minded fool in my book.

And don't get me started on cigarettes. I smoked a pack and a half a day for 13 years and I quit cod turkey 6 years ago and haven't had a single puff since. Anyone can do it if they truly want to. The reason they don't quit is not because they CAN'T, but because they don't really want to, period.

For anyone that really wants to quit eating meat, drinking cola, smoking cigarettes, etc. I have an idea for you. Go visit a hypnotherapist and have them tell you that they are a doctor while you are hypnotized and that you will die if you don't stop drinking beer or smoking or eating fast food or whatever your vice is. Now that is commitment!

In closing, please stop saying you can't do things if you don't really want to do them in the first place. It just makes you look simpleminded and extremely weak willed to those of us that CAN and DO.

            /rant

EDIT - Sorry if I sounded too "preachy" there, guys, but this is just something I feel very strongly about and just had to get that off my chest.

@ 55 do you eat a lot of dairy/eggs for your protein? I'm sure at some point in my life I'll try being a vegetarian for a phase just to try it but I feel like I'll just devour eggs, cheese and Greek yogurt.

As for people making changes and trying new things, I couldn't agree more. It's sad how afraid people are to try new things. Even I was hesitant to try intermittent fasting about 8 months ago and good God I will never go back to another diet. It's not the easiest thing to stick to when you're dating/married but I still do the best I can and it's far and away the best method of eating I've done. I try to get SO many people to try, without sounding pushy/psycho/etc, and not one person in 8 months has wanted to try it. All naysayers. Parents, sister, GF, friends, co-workers, etc.

Re: This country is dying a slow and painful death health wise.

For those wondering about what is considered "obese," this comes from the Obesity.org website:

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. BMI is calculated using height and weight. For example, a 5-foot, 9-inch adult who weighs 203 pounds would have a BMI of 30, thus putting this person into the obese category
There's definitely an issue with identifying people with lots of muscle mass as "obese" by using this BMI definition because BMI does not account for body fat percentages.

                Here's a link for a BMI calculator for anyone that's interested: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/info...calculator.php

I'm 6'3, 200 lbs, which gives me a BMI of 25.. right on the line of "normal weight" and "overweight" though I don't think there is anyone who has ever seen me that would call me overweight.

Re: This country is dying a slow and painful death health wise.

Oh yeah, BMI is the biggest joke in the health/diet world. I'm surprised it's recognized by anyone worth a damn. It's even more ridiculous when you take into account that muscle weighs more than fat. If you have any type of muscle you'll be considered overweight by BMI's standards.

At 6'8" 235 I'm just on the edge of overweight at 25.8 BMI. I can see a decent amount of my abs, don't think "overweight" people can.

                    Oh, I'm definitely strong willed.

I spend 5 days a week in the gym and work my *** off at it. I just don't think I could drop eating meat. I've cut out a lot of stuff (sodas and sweets) from my diet, sacrificing something else that I love just doesn't sound like something I could do, unless it was life or death.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting anyone dropping meat but add more vegetables to their diet. It's alarming meeting people who hardly eat any vegetables and all they eat is junk or just meat and potatoes.

Totally agree with eating more veges etc but vegetarianism is overrated Imo. Its not about not being "strong willed" enough to give up meat I believe humans are just supposed to eat meat. You think cavemen survived on berries and sticks?

I agree that the mistreatment of animals is a legit cause and I admire the dedication it must take to give up meat but I don't think there's anything too amazing about it but that's just me.
