    Re: 2013 FITNESS CHALLENGE

    EKG and echocardiogram next Wednesday.

I don't think there's anything wrong with my heart, but it's just a precaution they want to take before my enlistment.

I'm hoping they don't uncover something. My family does have a history of heart and blood pressure issues. I'm trying to battle my BP issues naturally, rather than medicating.

Currently 228 pounds... That's the lightest I have been in 10 years, I'd guess. My dad dying last week killed my appetite and sleep schedule, I'm not going to lie...

Keep the faith my brother as it is understandable with the appetite and sleep issues. Exercise and finding ways to reduce the stress will help in time. Nothing can replace the ones we love but I believe we will see them again very soon.

Thanks man. Things are improving each day on a mental and emotional level... Physically, I have been getting beat down. I have back issues that went about eight months without rearing its ugly head, but today, it went out.

          When it rains, it pours.

206 lbs baby! I've sort of hit the plateau, though.

Around 200 is really healthy for someone my height.

I always start my workouts with a one mile run to see where I'm at. I've got my one mile down to 8:30. I'm going to start shooting for 1 1/2 miles and then on to 2 miles. I'm just trying to prepare myself for what's coming in the future.

I don't want to be one of those guys smoking my last cigarette before I get on the bus and don't give a **** about what I'm doing. (I don't smoke btw) I'm in it to do my best.

Chase I don't know your scenario with the Military but As a vet I'd warn you about going in when you're fighting weight issues. Worst case scenario you aren't promotable due to weight, you get in a **** unit where they article 15 you for not meeting wt and tape even though they let you in, etc.

Recruiters don't really set you up for success. Exercise before joining, and then during your basic/AIT is easy. Once you move on its a stepping stone because minus your morning PT nothing is mandatory.

Just a heads up I obviously wish you the best I just don't want you to get ****ed in the long run and like I said before I don't really know your scenario.

I'm 6'3" and never been overweight or not able to clear tape and BMI in my entire life. My recommended weight is 213, I started at 226, and now I'm 206. I don't think I really have any issues with weight. I think I'll be okay.

Even when I was 226, I still cleared tape and BMI.

                  Damn wtf.

I 5'8, 183 when i got promoted and due to my neck size i was considered over wt (clearly not over wt)

The mitary has such a stone age outlook.

You ever run like 30/15's, 45/15's or some type of variation? Really helps to increase your mile time. Full sprint for x time then speed walk the countdown.
Or on 1/4 tracks you can full sprint the straights and jog/speed walk the curves.

I don't have a weight goal really, I just want to get in good shape. I hope to fit comfortably into my good suit by April when I have a wedding to attend, which means I need to drop at least 1 waist size by then.

My church has started up this thing called "Faith and Fitness" where they have the gym open once a week for whatever and a short devotion, I went tonight for the first time and played basketball for an hour and a half. It really helped me understand how out of shape I am, but really pumped me up to get in shape. So I intend to go to that each week and when I'm not there I plan on doing some sort of exercising at home or at work.

Last year I went through two spells of working out. First it was at the start of the year but then I wound up having to get my tonsils out and had to relax for 2 weeks and didn't get back into my routine. Then I started working out in the late Spring but once the weather got too hot and I was coming home from work nearly melted, I stopped and had not done anything until tonight.

Here's to keeping this mind set and even if something gets in the way, MAKING time to get it done!
Down to 171! Still playing basketball once a week and starting up softball twice a week today. I've been more mindful about food portions but still enjoy "unhealthy" foods and beer in occasion. Planning to keep this up for a loooong time.

Good to hear it, man. Nothing wrong with enjoying some unhealthy stuff if it's balanced out.

DDP yoga had been working great for me. My balance doing it is a marked improvement and I just feel better overall. Still don't have any goals, aside from getting to feel healthier body wise.

Haven't checked in awhile since moving to the Philippines. I gained weight when I went back home to Alaska and was at 230 yikes.

Been taking some serious yoga called Ashtanga yoga and been eating just veggies while I'm in Manila and also doing 30 minutes of cardio and down to 215.

Drinking tons of water and my flexibility and strength had improved since taking in this type of yoga. Three more weeks I'm off to Broracay for 4 weeks straight of intense yoga training and for now I'm leaning from the world's best here in Manila. Got lucky with timing as these teachers are guest here while I'm here. Has been life changing to learn from instructors who have been taught by gurus.

Good to see everyone doing good on here, keep it up fellas

For the record, I don't think BMI is a good way to measure anyone or strictly going off the tape. Even when I cleared that, it wasn't good enough. I had packed on a decent amount of muscle and I decided the quickest way, even though I didn't like it, was to quit lifting and go all cardio and core workouts and it's helped me a bunch.

You're right, the military is living in the stone age in some areas.

183 at 5'8" is pretty heavy unless your are a body builder/serious weight lifter. I am 5'7" and weigh 150 and I am pretty muscular without a lot of fat.

I'm not fat. I posted a pic a couple pages back. The weight and tape in military has just never evolved.
