Re: Uncommon Opinions
Sigh... because they are making money off of the athletes. Like another poster said on here, he works for a university and they wouldn't have enough money to give student-athletes any and still be able to keep all of their programs.
But guess what? The NCAA has plenty of money.
Anyway, on this Steve Spurrier business, let's say yo pay every NCAA athlete $300 per week only during their regular seasons (it would likely have to be longer, giving training schedules and such). There are 450,000 NCAA athletes as of last year, given an average season of 3 months (12 weeks, which is woefully long, or woefully short, depending on sport), that ends up being 6.5 billion dollars. NCAA revenue last year was 800 million, so they are just a little shy of that.
Even if they just pay men's basketball and football (even though that's really unfair), that's still roughly half of NCAA revenues. That revenue is also going to come straight from money the NCAA sends back to universities, so those universities will have to get that money from somewhere else, raising tuition or cutting other sports programs.Comment

Another issue with paying athletes is which ones do you pay? Football and Men's basketball are the revenue generators, so should they get paid while women's tennis players get nothing because they don't generate revenue? Football and basketball players already get more of a benefit, since they usually get full scholarships while baseball and soccer players only get partials.
At my school, yearly costs just for tuition and room and board are around $30,000. Adding in the travel, meal money, etc that each player gets, and they are already making more money than many college graduates will make in their first job.Comment
