Re: Things that took you way too long to realize....

A random one I just thought of after seeing a news story

Growing up I saw these on a number of people's yards around the neighbourhood.

That was the sole reason I believed in aliens growing up. I figured if so many people have these giant satellites in their yard to try tracking aliens that they must obviously be real.

Don't know how long it took before I realized what they were. I dont even remember if I knew what they were for by time people started getting rid of/replacing them.

It's crazy how few speaking lines Arnold Schwarzenegger has in The Terminator. I had to look it up when I realized it. Only 16 in total.

Most of them are at the beginning when he is repeating other characters, and then at the gun store.

      Spoiler

Of course, I am not including the T-101's lines when he mimics others, such as Sarah's mom.

EDIT: Speaking of which, when I first saw Terminator: Dark Fate, I thought Gabriel Luna was taking on someone else's voice when he was the Rev-9 and impersonating a border patrol officer, only to find out that's the actor's actual voice when I saw him play Joel's brother in The Last of Us HBO series.

Never knew actors can't use a name that's been used by another actor part of the SAG.

I feel like I heard it with Michael B Jordan but I forgot about it.

But now I never knew Michael Keatons name isn't even Michael Keaton, but he can't even use his real name because of the other actor Michael Douglas.

Growing up I was mostly around dogs, not cats aside from a pair of my grandmother (on my father's side), which were gray-ish or what-not.

As you may have seen, during the pandemic a lot of flora and fauna that usually is kept on check by regular human activities got a chance to go free and do as it pleased. In my neighborhood that meant a lot more stray cats than before and we have them in all colors and shapes.

Long winded post to say, goddamned I didn't realized orange cats were so big, in absolute terms and in comparison to other cats

No seriously, some of them look like cheetahs

And, tangentially to this realization, I also realized that this is probably why Garfield is an orange cat. Always thought the color was just happenstance :P

Based on current events I thought this post was going to take a very different turn after that first sentence.

Now that I think of it, there's an orange/tan alley cat around me that's bigger than the black and white ones. I just assumed it had more fur or was fluffier so it looked bigger, but maybe it's just a beast. I don't know enough about breeds of cat to know anything beyond that though.

Re: Things that took you way too long to realize....

I have a Maine Coon feline that can get around thirty pounds in the winter months. His name is Jake, and he greets me like I'm his best friend, often lying across my chest when I sleep. No matter my position, though, he has to have his right paw reaching out and touching my body in some way when he is resting.

Somewhat related, the neighborhood I live in [that I inherited] doesn't have an HOA but does fall under a covenant/pact, as it is an older neighborhood that my great-grandfather invested in with a decent amount of land in the early/mid 1940s after getting home from the war. Our covenant rules specifically state that no neighbors are allowed to have Bengal tigers or any other feline that exceeds one hundred pounds. Our plots of land all have at least ten acres, and in the early 1980s, one of the neighbors [who still lives here] had a wild hare idea to import some tigers and did just that. They somehow got out, and it caused issues in the community, naturally. Alabama will always find a way to place itself on the outskirts of common sense when given the opportunity.

Haha, Joe Exotic would like a word.

We adopted a cat in early 2023 and she’s unlike any cat I’ve ever had or been around. She fetches sticks like a dog. She walks with us through the trails in the woods right here. Walks our son to the bus stop. She’s smart as hell.

My buddy has one of those legit bengal cats so I know she’s not close to that breed, but there’s something extra in her. Totally different from the cat I had growing up who was an affectionate princess, but we’ve learned to love her in different ways. She seems to be getting more affectionate (she’s always friendly and playful, but not overly affectionate and won’t sit with or on ya) as she gets older which is nice.

I personally love cats and their personality. I like that they march to their own beat. So when they are behaving or loving, you know it’s real. Or they’re hungry. Lol

Same. I love cats and dogs, and really all animals. Dogs have a loyalty about them that cats typically do not, but cats have an instinctive curious side of their personalities that is really intriguing to me. Their primal senses are also spectacular.

Speaking of fetching, if you begin training them really young to retrieve items and offer proper reward to them, they learn very fast. I have mixed cat (Maine Coon and Siamese) named Bleu that is doing really well with commands. Her memory and intelligence seems to be a healthy mixture inherited from both her parents.

My next project is going to be falconry, taking in wounded or young birds of prey (predator birds). I have already began on the first concept of what will eventually become a mew. I am really looking forward to this challenge and have been for quite awhile.

I love animals, but I really dislike it when specific breeds become popular accessories for people on social media. Like the obsession women have with French bulldogs. Or the whole Pit-Bull culture thing. I'll never understand any of that, so maybe this is the opposite of the point of this thread lol.

I didn't know the Sopranos started in the Nineties. I don't know why I thought it started after 2001. Maybe because I didn't catch it in its original run and there's less than 90 episodes, and I was thinking of when it ended, and worked my timeline thinking backward from there.

Firetrucks have speakers (or a megaphone) on them.

I obviously know/have heard many times a firetruck honking when trying to drive through roads/traffic to get through during an emergency in addition to the sirens going off.

Today was the first time ever I heard all of that, but then someone in the actual truck getting on a speaker to be like "Truck, PULL ASIDE!" when speaking to some box truck who just stopped on the road when hearing the fire truck coming rather than pull aside (coincidentally, there's been a recent/non surprising news story going around the city about how companies/truckers cheat the system to hire more drivers by paying off people to give new drivers their truck licenses).

Even in these situations I normally just hear the firetruck honking at people, never heard someone just get on the speaker to directly tell someone to move.

It seems obvious that a fire truck would have a PA speaker, but now that I think about it I don't know that I've ever heard a voice come from one either.

Not a bad "thing that took too long realize" submission.

                                That's the thing.

I'm sure they use it (or a megaphone) during emergencies like if they're trying to communicate to people in the building, but actually hearing it while the truck is driving and they're just talking to/at another driver who is in their way was weird.
