Not sure how anyone can watch the uncensored video and the video of what was going on in the commercial break after and think that was staged.
Make it make sense for the person about to become Best Actor to be involved in an incident like that. It doesn't. Not for him, not for Chris Rock, and not for the Acedemy (who is starting an investigation today btw)Comment

What’s there to investigate? Chris riffed on the public infidelity of his wife, Will was not trying to continue to be the butt of those jokes and stepped to him. Having both been entertainers for a long time, I assume they have some sort of relationship and it felt more like friends settling things amongst friends... albeit with an audience of millions watching at home, lol. I don’t think either thought of the far reaching societal commentaries everyone is writing about today when they acted and reacted as they did.
I do think Chris’ reaction or lack thereof was what kept this as civil as it was for an unscripted interruption and physical altercation. Chris could’ve lost his cool, but he took a pretty solid shot, processed it in real time and kept it moving. For a dude getting the five fingers, he seems to have come out relatively unscathed but the meme machine is working overtime the last 24 hours so we’ll see how he ends up, haha. Everyone seems more focused on Will and everything that led to this.

My take: even if you thought Rock's joke was in poor taste it doesn't justify Smith's assault.
But he did it and got away with it, it is what it is and with Rock not pressing charges that probably ends it for now.
My brother and I were talking about it and thought Rock's comedy friends should rally around him. I know Gervais is definitely going to say something about it (at show, a bit I mean); imagine if he does it at the Golden Globes next year with Smith present, ooof.
Regarding the "Academy's review", yeah, I would be surprised if they revoked his Oscar. At best a sanction (expulsion?) regarding his membership in the Academy.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

Rock didn't riff on the infidelity of his wife, though he should have after he got slapped. Imagine the scenes. He made a joke about her hair, which she has lost because of alopecia. At first he tried to laugh it off til he got "the look" from her (which I'm not sure why he respects that at this point, but that's his life), and then he lost his head.

He made a joke about his wife and his wife wasn't having it. He got the look like "are you going to do something about it" and did something about it.

I dont know if this is even true, but I heard that apparently Will Smith's team was made aware of the joke beforehand (through rehearsals or something). I've heard people mention 2 different things. Either he (Chris Rock) was told to not go ahead with the joke by Wills team, or Will told them he'd deal with Chris himself.
And I also heard its not the first time Will Smith (or maybe just Jada?) has had an issue with a joke from Chris Rock, which Chris was told in the past that he should stop doing.Comment

Apparently before the show Will said there will be chaos tonight? That might indicate that he knew about it before hand.
Worst case is that it's poor taste for Chris Rock to go and do a joke he was asked not to do (which is still a pretty mild offense). That still wouldn't remotely absolve Will for his reaction.
