    Not what I mean.

If you have to ask if it's racist to point out a fact (or in this hypothetical question, a later to be proven fact), I don't think you know what the word actually means.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

Progress is why viruses aren't named after locations anymore, experts say

Moreover, the practice of naming illnesses after locations or ethnicities has historically been accompanied by racial, ethnic or national stigma, said Catherine Ceniza Choy, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

"History illuminates that during times of epidemics, this racialized stigma creates a simplistic blame game with violent consequences," Choy said.

Even naming the 2009 pandemic "swine flu created presented devastating effects for certain economic sectors. At the time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has renamed the illness H1N1, said lab tests initially showed that the virus was similar to influenza viruses known to circulate in pigs. While evidence did not reveal a link between eating pork and the spread of the flu, the name posed an issue for pork farmers, who witnessed a decline in sales due because of the virus. Several countries, including China, Russia and Ukraine, even banned pork imports from Mexico, where the virus was suspected of killing more than 150 people.

In understanding the implications previous naming practices have had, the World Health Organization itself revised its own conventions, even warning media and scientists to do so, as well, in 2015.

"In recent years, several new human infectious diseases have emerged. The use of names such as 'swine flu' and 'Middle East Respiratory Syndrome' has had unintended negative impacts by stigmatizing certain communities or economic sectors," said Dr. Keiji Fukuda, who was the assistant director-general for health security at the WHO at the time.

Well, maybe it's just me, but if a virus is coming from swine and coming from a particular country, maybe I have a right to know that to not purchase such infected swine or any products made from those swine.

Who said anything about swine being racist? It caused problems for the pork industry because people were afraid the meat would be contamminated. The issue is that when a virus is given a name related to its source, some people have a tendency to excessively discriminate against anything having that name. I'm sure you saw news reports about Chinese restaurants losing business even before the lockdowns and being harassed by people because those people for whatever reason were blaming anything and everything Chinese for the virus. Even with calling it coronavirus, there were reports of people refusing to buy Corona beer and I saw a retweet on twitter that was a picture of a bunch of containers containing different types of beans all of which were empty except the one labeled "Corona beans".

Now how bout let's move on from the racism talk

The problem with that statement is that hospitalizations are continuing to go up as well. Which means the distress is serious enough for alot of people that medical intervention is needed otherwise they could possibly die. The virus becoming less lethal is likely due to the healthcare system having a better understanding of how to treat disease than they did 4 months ago like trying to avoid the use of ventilators and oxygenating the blood instead..

I would still think the above is good news; we are learning how to treat those who are sick. In my mind, deaths going down can only be a good thing, period.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

Our daughter has a good family friend that is visiting from Dubai where she's been living for the past year. She is very conscientious of social distancing and protecting others.

                  Dictatorship vs Democracy.

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates. All together, they have over 51,000 cases and 323 deaths.

All citizens are required to wear a mask, even inside your car. If you are caught without wearing a mask, you will be fined.

If there is a small outbreak in a neighborhood, they will close down the area with a curfew from 6pm till 6am.

A hotel was discovered not following the orders and they were fined a million dollars and their license was revoked for a period of time.

My wife asked her how she feels telling people she's from America and she said in Dubai, it's embarrassing in regards to the virus.

I'm merely pointing out the different approaches of two different countries on they handled the virus.

Little update from the field here in The Bronx. In the last month, I’ve came across a very limited amount of people in which I suspected they could have had COVID.

Today Day 1 of Phase 3 down here, and the Mayor has delayed indoor dining and inside bar service.

Ct has indoor dining at reduced capacity but we just delayed phase 3 indefinitely...which i think Is just bars and maybe some looser capacity restrictions.

Glad we’re still being smart and cautious even as the numbers keep improving

Can we at least concede at this point that hydroxychloroquine can help some COVID patients?
