Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

If You Can Grocery Shop in Person, You Can Vote in Person

Zeke Emanuel has a message for jittery Americans ahead of a momentous election: Voting in person during the coronavirus pandemic is about as safe as going to the grocery store.

    ------------------------------------------
    <section class="l-article__section s-cms-content" itemprop="articleBody" id="article-section-1">
Yet with the start of in-person early voting just weeks away in some states, Emanuel is back with an update. Public-health officials have learned a lot about the transmission of COVID-19 since the spring, Emanuel told me, and the message around voting must change. “There’s a legitimate concern, but I do think we can make it much safer by following the precautions,” he said. “You don’t want people to be disenfranchised by the pandemic, and you should encourage people that it’s safe. It’s like shopping.”

In-person voting is no more risky than going to the grocery store, Emanuel argues, as long as certain safeguards are in place, the same measures many Americans have become accustomed to since the spring: Wear a mask and line up at least six feet apart. Voting locations should have plexiglass barriers separating poll workers from voters, as well as disinfectant to wipe down commonly used surfaces and objects. (In the risk-assessment chart—which Emanuel created with James P. Phillips, the chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University, and Saskia Popescu, an epidemiologist at the University of Arizona—voting would also go in the same low-medium risk category as playing golf or tennis.)

In general, I agree. I voted in-person for the primary, and will vote in-person Nov. 3rd. But it can be different. There are places where folks are waiting for hours to vote. That increases opportunity, but even that is generally outdoors.

For the primary, we had no real line, and there was plenty of social distancing inside. Personally, we plan to get up and hit the polls when they open and get it out of the way. But I think things can go a little less smooth in some precincts.

I wouldn't want to do jury duty, but one ought to be able to keep themselves reasonably safe. It's absolutely insane that voting by mail was screwed with so much, but, here we are.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

From the September 3rd IHME projection notes for the US.

        Current situation
        • The number of reported cases peaked in the end of July at around 70,000 cases per day and has
subsequently declined to around 45,000 cases per day. Given that the current lag between death
rates and case rates appears to have lengthened to more than two weeks, deaths have only started to
decline after the middle of August and are now averaging around 850 per day. COVID-19 remains the
second-leading cause of death in the nation.
        • Effective R is above 1 in 10 states: Idaho, Utah, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Virginia, West
Virginia, Illinois, and Iowa. Increasing transmission in these states, however, is less than the decline in
more populous states such as Texas, Florida, and California contributing to the national decline in
        cases.
        • Only eight states have more than 10% of the population that has been infected with COVID-19:
Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts.

        • The death rate is over 4 per million per day in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas,
Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.

        Trends in key drivers
        • The only change in mandates since August 27 has been the lifting of any business restrictions in South
        Carolina.
        • National mobility levels continued to increase slowly in the last week, with increases in mobility seen
in states such as California, New York, New Jersey, Nevada, and Arizona.
        • Mask use continues to decline from a peak in early August. Declines are notable throughout the
Midwest, including in some states such as Illinois and Iowa with increasing case numbers.
        • Likely reflecting the declining number of individuals presenting with symptoms, national testing rates
continued to decline slowly from a peak in early August.

        Forecasts
        • We extended our forecasts to January 1. We expect the daily death rate in the United States, because
of seasonality and declining vigilance of the public, to reach nearly 3,000 a day in December.

Cumulative deaths expected by January 1 are 410,000; this is 225,000 deaths from now until the end
        of the year.
        • If a herd immunity strategy is pursued, namely no further government intervention is taken from now
to January 1, then the death toll could increase to 620,000 by January 1. Compared to the reference
scenario, this would be 210,000 more deaths from now to the end of the year.
        • Increasing mask use remains an extraordinary opportunity for the US. Increasing mask use to the
levels seen in Singapore would decrease the cumulative death toll to 288,000, or 122,000 lives saved
compared to the reference scenario. This would be a 30% reduction in the deaths expected from now
until the end of the year.

If you can go to the grocery store? Jesus, everything is online now you don't even need to go to the store anymore.

So are we pushing for online voting now?

"Unfortunately, our positive test rate among students continues to rise far too rapidly. It has been 20 percent or greater for the past two days," says Chancellor Rebecca Blank in a statement.

Our ⁦@RyanJenkins_TV⁩ is on UW-Madison’s decision to move all classes online for two weeks and quarantine two dorms to try and curb spread of the Coronavirus

I should have added colleges to the Labor Day and flu season above to see if the cases increase in the fall.

I don't understand how I can submit my tax returns online, containing confidential financials and most importantly my SSN, but I can't vote online. My state doesn't even require any ID, just give them your name and go to the station. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

Or how many of them were printed and mailed before the rise of the internet in the 90s and early 00s.

I'm perfectly fine with in-person voting, but don't cut out other options for no good reason whatsoever and rely on the argument, "well, you go to Wal-Mart don't you?!" or else you can just watch my eyes roll right out of my damn head.

CDC study on community exposures related to Covid spread finds those testing positive were about twice as likely to have dined at a restaurant within last 2 weeks. But we need data that assess if this perceived risk is mostly associated with indoor dining.

                  Long live takeout, for now.

In Lexington, KY, 24 patients/residents have died from the coronavirus at one nursing home.

The same nursing home has 18 active cases of covid-19, with 14 of those being patients/residents.

Numbers already going back up here with workplaces opening up the past number of weeks.

Just wait until schools are open (happening next week, other districts opened already, but the biggest one is next week).

I'm surprised they're having disinfectant wipes on sale. Stocked up on that. It'll be christmas currency.

Going to try to get tested tomorrow as I'm feeling sick. Started yesterday afternoon with a sore throat, now I have that, cough, headache and some congestion. No fever but feeling "feverish." Hopefully it's just a cold. Imagine must have caught something at school. We had one kid who got sent home because he was coughing and sneezing all over the place, and the parents sent him back to school the next day smh, same thing happened and he was sent home again and has to stay out 10 days now.

Not the news I'm sure people were thinking they'd see.

Schools starting back and positive tests are now at the highest it's been all summer. Only gonna get worse before end of the month.

There's a reason why experts predicted a second wave all the way back since March or April.

IIRC, the second wave would be worst around November, and second wave would be worse than the first. Too bad I didnt bookmark the site because I forgot where I saw it.
