Hmmm. Try starting the game, and I get "Football Manager is running dangerously low on memory. Tried to allocate xxxxxxxxx bytes" then a few seconds later another popup: "Football Manager has run out of memory" and it crashes.

          Anyone had that before?

My laptop has 8 gigs of RAM, and I've never had an issue with any FM game before. I've played FM16 for about 20 hours with no problems whatsoever.

edit: restarted the computer and that seemed to fix it. Working fine now.

After being continually frustrated by sports games in recent years, I decided to take the plunge into text-based sims this year. I bought OOTP last month and picked this up last week. I've really enjoyed it so far. I am not that knowledgeable about football/soccer in real life as I really don't watch it much aside from national team competitions (World Cup, UEFA, CONCACAF, etc.), though, so it's a bit challenging from a knowledge standpoint. I'm trying to figure out where I want to go from here.

I did one season at Stalybridge in the Vanarama Conference North and narrowly managed to stave off relegation and keep my job (I finished 19th... the last spot before relegation and the board's goal was not to be relegated). I had my starting goalkeeper get injured late in the season and we nearly blew it over the last couple games. We had a must-win game against our rivals in the second-to-last game and they were absolutely terrible. All we needed to do was win; instead, we got slaughtered. Fortunately, other teams lost and it didn't matter.

The second season has not gone well. I'm winless through six games (three draws and three losses) and have lost by a combined score of 1-10 in the last two games. I think I did not manage the transfer market very well, which I was afraid of.

I'm thinking of trying a small country league or something now. Maybe Iceland? Just somewhere where I can learn the game.

I'd recommend using a big club if you're new to FM. More money, better players, etc. It'll allow you to learn the game and have more room for error. Managing in the lower leagues is very tough in a game where the learning curve is already pretty high.

Obviously you can play how you like, but maybe give teams like Barcelona or Bayern Munich a try. Once you get a feel for it, then go for the lesser teams.

Patience is key with FM. You will fail and it will be frustrating. However, if you put the time in and learn from your mistakes, it's one of the most rewarding games out there. There's tons of FM guides out there, too.

Yes, that is good advice. You'll want to learn the transfer/loan market and the contract game before taking it to the lower leagues. Plus at the big clubs with good players you can dig more into the tactics/player instructions. Lower leagues are filled with players who aren't really good enough to get too fancy with that aspect. You'll also get a taste of what it's like to manage a larger roster with a bad seed or two and players hounding you for playing time.

Have to say it's pretty impressive that in your first crack you were able to stave of relegation in that league with what I assume was a pretty bad side relative to your competition.

It's ridiculous that I need 100 points to win the league in freakin' 2026.
