Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

It's been awhile since I've posted a real update, part of it was a situation in my Nottingham Forest save that almost made me quit, one of the last screenshots I posted was of Karl Darlow asking for first team football, well I figured I'd rotate him in against weaker sides so he'd stop complaining. At the time Hugo Lloris was my first choice keeper, so it was easy to see why Darlow was #2 Either way we had a bit of fixture congestion, so I decided to rotate my squad, fairly heavily against Watford, this was, and will remain my worst mistake as a Manager at Nottingham Forest. We lost heavily 5-1, and I lost it, after 3 costly mistakes led to goals, backup centreback Steven Taylor was released immediately after the game, brought in to mentor some of the kids and provide cover for the first team Taylor had been solid til this absolutely unforgivable, and appalling game. The number 27, will never be worn again as long as I am manager of Nottingham Forest due to the absolute shame Taylor brought to it in that appearance. I immediately demoted Darlow the U21s and transfer-listed him, he ended up leaving for 500k to Leeds United in January after never making an appearance again for the club. Jose Manuel Reina was brought in in January for 300k to provide cover for Hugo Lloris. Another person who played poorly was Denis Cheryshev, he also never made another appearance for Forest, and departed to HSV for an eventual £10m. I fined the entire starting XI for their poor performance in that game, debated quitting the job at Forest, but eventually hung on, we finished second to Chelsea by 4 points.

More club drama ensued though as Hugo Lloris told me he wanted to retire in France, and was immediately courted by PSG(they've bought half my team since then) and since he had done well and I understand where he's coming from I sold him to PSG for £15m plus incentives. Jack Wilshere took offense and demanded to know why, and there was no way to get him to calm down so he ended up going off to Bordeaux for £20m plus incentives. Since then we've been doing okay we finished 4th that year, though with more points than when we finished 2nd. The triumphs of that year however were beating Arsenal in the Europa League Final and beating QPR in the FA Cup Final to get an unusual double.

Then as per usual, success meant clubs came knocking PSG bought 3 of my players for a combined outlay of £100.5m + future incentives, Chelsea bought two of my players for a combined £40m, thankfully I've been able to keep my £51m rated striker Patrick Bamford. Along with my attacking trio of Mats Møller Dæhli, Martin Ødegaard and Henri Lansbury. 2020 has brought us my favorite success as well, we opened the new stadium in Brian Clough Park, and our first league game went well.

And phew, there's your Adventures with Forest update, lol.

At the International Break and thank goodness QPR lost so I could get a tad bit of breathing room at the top. They have almost matched my side in form so having them lose was a blessing. My attacking play has improved thanks to some much needed improvement from my key players.

        This is the table:

Game of the month was a weird one against Bristol City in the CoC 4th Round. The scoreline was flattering as little used Carlos de Pena scored twice in extra time to earn the squad a quarterfinal spot:

Kike continues to lead the league in scoring and Kalas and Ensue continue to shine:

This is how our Capital One Journey continues:

Can't complain too much. Avoided the big clubs and have a shot at the semis where anything can happen over 2 legs if I go through.

        My dream season continues

I was offered a player, Maximiliano Romero, by his agent. He had transfered to Leicester City from Velez last season, but he was now unhappy and transfer listed. I couldn't afford to scout him (I can't afford to scout anyone), but my new Argentinian scout had close to full knowledge of Romero's attributes. They looked good enough for him to be a rotation player on my Strasbourg side, and he's only 17. So I took a flyer and threw a low-ball offer at Leiciester (all I could afford to spend), hoping that since they relegated they might need to offload some players. But I knew there wasn't a chance in hell they would accept. And then they said yes, miraculously. By low-ball offer, by the way, I mean I moved my wage budget slider so that my 0 transfer budget became 100k transfer budget. Well, it turns out it was worth the risk. My assistant manager believes he has the talent to be a star Ligue 1 Striker. And if he really is that good, I have no idea why he even considered signing with Strasbourg.
I'm quoting this, because it turns out I just stumbled into a wonderkid. Why he was willing to join my side I'll never understand, but boy did I get lucky with that signing. I had never heard of him before, so I just googled him, and several unreliable UK rags like the Mirror had him linked with Arsenal over the summer.

That is amazing. 1. I wasn't aware you could even do that. 2. Did I say how amazing that is.

This board are bunch of poop heads. I took over Feb. 9th. I've lost TWO games since taking over. I am at the final game of the season. We were in 19th when I took over. We are now in 5th (playoff spot), up three points on 6th. And about to play 6th in the final match. On the way here I made it to the semi of the cup. Only expected to make 3rd round. They only gave me the goal of finishing mid table, or top half of table actually. So like 12-8 would have been acceptable.

But now I am getting all these media questions about my issues with the board, and if I have started looking for another job. I was so confused. I'm out performing my expectations. I've turned this season around. Promoted gems hiding in their youth academy who have turned into regular starters. And haven't spent a penny outside of extending contracts of existing players. So I go look at the board tab, and I am at 48%. They are still mad about a 0-2 loss in my fourth game. Mind you, my only league loss. We are currently on a 12 game beaten run. This isn't good enough for them apparently. We might even get promoted to League 2 for crying out loud.

The club philosophies one is at like 40%. Because I am playing too much attacking football. What? Another one is at like 30%, saying it would be cheap to fire me, so my job security is low. Why would they do that? None of this makes any sense. If I get fired at the end of the season, I will hold a personal grudge. I will take a job with any other team in this division, and personally go out of my way to make sure if that I only win two games a year, its against them.

I was clinging to the final promotion spot with a one point lead over 4th place Grenoble, and I had a huge match against 2nd place Gazélec Football Club Ajaccio. 5 of my key players were away on international duty, so I was pessimistic. Turns out I shouldn't have been:

                  1. When you say issues with the board, have you said anything negative about them to the press, had board requests turned down, applied to other jobs, etc? Those are all things that can make the press ask you about your future with the club.

                  2. That job value bar always stays low when it is cheap to fire the manager. All that means is that you lack security in that one area. Basically, they could fire you without it costing them anything, so job value is not something that could save you if your performance as a manager is bad. Whereas if firing you would cost them money, that would be something the board would take into consideration when deciding if they should terminate your contract.

                  3. Also, while it's always a good idea to meet the club philosophies (and if attacking doesn't work for you club, I would make a board request to change it), the most important thing is your overall security. I would bet that the board is pleased with your performance, given that you are way above expectations.

Won the league with Liverpool in 2016/17.

Naturally, lost Emre Can to Man City due to minimum release fee. Sold Sturridge because he (still) couldn't stay healthy. Got a nice replacement striker though in Neymar. Sturridge/Can paid for Neymar and a couple mil extra in the bank.

Cubas is more than a good enough replacement for Can at this point, my worry is that I don't have a decent DM if he needs a rest/goes down. Worst case is Pogba/Henderson slide back to DM and Henderson/Wilshere/Pogba play MC.

I have a few youth players to work in at DM as well, if I don't send them all out on loan that can play against weaker sides in the league.

So far major transfers this year (including the players bought the season before)

                    Out (Prices in £)
                    Christian Benteke (Mainz) - 14M
Mario Balotelli (Man City) - 19.5M
                    Luis Alberto (Southampton) - 6.5M
                    Joe Allen (Hoffenheim) - 12.75M
James Milner (FC Barcelona) - 7.75M
                    Lucas Leiva (Juventus )- 10M
Adam Lallana (Real Madrid) - 24M
                    Tiago Ilori (Cagliari) - 5M
                    Andre Wisdom (Watford) - 4M
                    Dejan Lovren (Sassuolo) - 6M
                    Lazar Markovic (PSG) - 19.25M
Emre Can (Man City) - 47.5M
Daniel Sturridge (Man City) - 46.5M

                    In (Prices in £)
Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid) - 20M
                    Andres Cubas (Boca) - 4M
                    Paul Pogba (Juventus) - 100M
                    Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) - 8.75M
                    Neymar (FC Barcelona) - 90M
                    Jorge (Flamengo) - 7.75M
                    Paul Nardi (Monaco) - 3.8M

Got some nice options for attack though, with all my players being able to slot in competently in the formation so I should *theoretically* be able to slot them in, get them all their games and not miss too much of a beat on the attack.

                    Here's the tactic
                    Spoiler

Coutinho, Firmino, Ibe (who had 10 goals, 2 assists, and a 7.60 rating in 25 appearances last year) and Adekanye can play all play MR/ML/AMC.

Gotze and Neymar can play MR/ML/AMC/ST (with Gotze also being able to slot in at MC.)

Barbosa is just a straight up striker in my tactic.

2017/2018 should be an interesting season with all these major changes. Even with Cubas being a weaker DM (he's also a midget at 5'5'' 132lbs) he still performs well enough when given a chance and started 15 games last year for us.

Next seasons transfer budget will most likely go towards strengthening the backline. If I hadn't sold Sturridge, that would have been this seasons goal, but Coentrao is still solid at 29, Jorge is being brought in for the future as he is only 21 so LB is solid. Clyne and Flanagan are good enough at RB to still be solid. Gomez (20) and Sakho (27) with Skrtel (32) as a backup are good at DC, but we need some more young talent at DC as Lloyd Jones (21) is the only player I have in U21 that could slot in, but he's not near good enough for anything other than cup games. Still may find one before the season starts, but we'll see what the transfer budget is like when Neymar comes in in July. Backup keeper (and potentially keeper for the future) is Nardi, who I brought in after he requested to be transfer listed. He's not there yet, but he's only 23 and my scouts tell me he could be at Mignolet's level (which, of course, I would rather have better but I am slowly working on building the team up.)

                      1. No jobs offers or anything. Only request for a new pitch to be laid end of season because everyone was complaining about how crap ours was. And they approved it saying they agreed it would improve our playing ability. I did try to hire a new scout since my assistant pointed him out, and he was way better than the one we have. Would have given us two, not replacing existing. The board did block it due a promise I wouldn't make staffing changes. But I though that meant keeping the current guys on staff. Not bringing in to fill empty spots (1/2). So I think that must have been what triggered it.

                      3. After the final game of the season, which we ended up losing at home (bummer), we actually still finished in 5th due to GD with that team. The board confidence stuff jumped up big time. Most all bars are green now, above 60%. Even the philosophies one. So I am thinking they were actually happy the whole time?, and it just wasn't showing that to me for some reason. A glitch maybe. Or it just does a major update end of season?

FIFA's transfer system is hilariously inadequate compared to this game.

Selling while Hot on Allen and Lallana. Lucas is still a serviceable DM.

When I sold him, Allen had 12 appearances for me with 4 goals, 8 assists and 2 PoM (with an average rating of 7.63.

Lallana had 6 goals and 4 assists with an average rating of 7.55 in 19 appearances in his first year with Madrid.

Lucas was on a downswing, but got sold by Juve to Dynamo Kyiv for 4.6M.

The values on those transfers I'd say is right about where they should be. Don't forget Liverpool bought Lallana for 25M when they got him. Can't compare the **** that FIFA trots out as a transfer system to FM (not that FM is perfect by any means, but it is light years beyond FIFA.)

                                I love sweeper keepers.

                                Thauvin update

The assist leader in the league was ..... Kyle Naughton. Still can't get in the England squad though.

Pulis took over Stoke when they were 19th in January, he got them relegated. I think he quit with a game remaining. I would love to get Shaqiri, maybe they'll be interested in Thauvin

I already got John Guidetti and Kevin Wimmer signed.

Arsenal won the league. Wenger retired and Arsenal hired Klopp. Liverpool got 17M in compensation for him.
