Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I didn't love the match (I was rooting for the Timbers), but the ATL crowd was indeed rocking and apparently the game was a ratings success, both of which bode well for the league. Honestly, I feel that Atlanta deserved that win for their fanbase alone, they have been amazing since the team's inception.
Personally speaking, the 2018 MLS season was tremendous fun to follow. I got to live in Seattle for a year amongst two of the more hardcore soccer fanbases in the country, I will never forget attending those matches. Just getting to CenturyLink Field or Providence Park was on my bucket list, now I can say I've been to both stadiums multiple times. Just thinking about some of those moments gives me goosebumps.
Next season it's back to the StubHub Center and being a full-time Galaxy supporter. I believe it's going to be a rocky road, but a least we've (apparently) got Zlatan for another season, which should be entertaining at the very least. MLS has Cincinnati coming into the league next year, then Nashville, Miami and who knows what's next. Should be fun!www.heyimbill.com | sports poster art and other cool stuffComment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
So, money is everything, so this is 99.9% not a factor. But the Ottawa Fury being denied entry into the USL is interesting for the future of Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. I know SUM and MLS will most likely stop anything bad from happening, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, who knows, right?Support Local Sports

The new "Canadian Premier League" won't last more than a year because revenue won't offset travel costs.Comment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
All that said, it seems likely that the reason they decided against allowing Ottawa in to the USL is that the former CSA president is now the CONCACAF president, and he apparently had a big hand in the CPL. Either way, nothing is likely to come of this other than a hopeful 1-year exception for Ottawa to play in the USL, then move to the CPL, and we all go back to having our heads in the ground over non-issues like this.Support Local Sports

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
"Concacaf to date has not received a formal request from any party to consider sanctioning the participation of the Ottawa Fury in the 2019 season of the USL, despite public announcements by Ottawa Fury that it would be doing so."
So, to pull from Reddit:
1. CSA sanctions the Fury to play in USL in 2019
2. Ottawa Fury announce publicly they will play in the USL.
3. CONCACAF sends a warning to the CSA indicating they will not receive USL sanctioning in 2019. CSA may or may not advise the Fury of this.
4. CSA waits to hear from the USSF on whether they will receive USL sanctioning. CSA does not hear back from USSF.
5. CONCACAF sends a second warning to the CSA indicating they will not receive USL sanctioning in 2019. CSA may or may not advise the Fury of this.
6. CONCACAF rejects the Fury's USL sanctioning in 2019.
7. Everyone loses their ****.

Lmao, if this is negligence on the club, or CSA's part it's even better, though the MLS implications no longer exist.
I still think the best way to handle this is to grant them USL sanctioning for 2019, and deal with everything in 2020. I'd prefer a mandate of them joining the CPL for 2020, but I don't think that would be constructive, so it'd just be characterized as 'heavily incentivized'Support Local Sports

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
Aren't there like three USL divisions now? I mean, they're probably handing out franchises out in Hoohahville and Mud Springs, I'd think Ottawa would be a lock.www.heyimbill.com | sports poster art and other cool stuffComment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
There are, and they're actually doing a fairly good job of both offering expansion and making sure the expansion is viable. I've been following it closely because of Forward Madison, but it looks like between alllowing the USLPA and the launch of League One and renaming of the PDL to League Two they've done a great job of creating some stabilisation in the lower leagues of America.
That all said, this doesn't have anything to do with the USL, CONCACAF is the one that is seemingly going to disallow Ottawa from playing the in the USL.Support Local Sports

New MLS Playoff Structure for 2019
7 teams from each conference make the playoffs (up from 6). Only top seed gets a bye. Every series is one-game elimination with the higher seeded team hosting.
Sounds like the impetus may have been the upcoming 2012 World Cup that starts in late November. You can't be playing MLS playoff games in late November and December with the World Cup going on.
Not a big fan of eliminating the two-game series but it is what it is.Comment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I’m glad they are eliminating the 2 leg system. I’ve never liked that.

The big problem with the old format for me was that there was usually a two-week break between playoff games because of an international week during the MLS playoff calendar.Comment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I'm personally not too invested in the playoffs, especially when 14 of the 24 eligible teams end up making it. Playoffs aren't meant to determine the best team, so I personally prefer the most exciting route, which is certainly single elimination.
Only thing I would've liked to see is reseeding so that you get a little more incentive to finish higher in the conference.Support Local Sports

I think they went ahead and expanded the playoffs now so they don’t have to in 2020 when you have more expansion teams playing and beyond. I’m curious if they will change it when they reach 32.
