Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Something that only football can really bring...late game drama is available in all sports...but nothing quite like in football. The complaint in the US about the "Lack of Scoring" is missing the point...it's full of "hold your breath" moments.
US v Guatemala WCQ back in 04...Birmingham, AL, stands just full of Guatemalans...best live-event I've ever attended.
It truly is. There is nothing more nerve wracking than when your squad is holding onto a result and just fighting off waves and waves of attacks. You might get a tense last 2 mins in hoops (that lasts 10-15mins thru timeouts, fouls, etc...) but 20 mins of footy when you’re a man down and all 9 outfield players are within 5 yards of your own box is excruciating

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Wow, looks like the EPL is considering expanding by 4 teams. The Championship will be shifting the playoffs down the table to accommodate the first year's change. Top 6 will gain automatic promotion and then the 1 playoff winner. The normal 3 relegations/promotions will still happen. Thoughts?Last edited by ImTellinTim; 04-01-2021, 01:55 PM.Comment

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Comes off a little bit salty.
TAA didn't deserve to get called up. He's sucked this year. His offensive production dropped off and his defensive liabilities have been exposed. It's not all on him as there are factors that have helped to influence it but England has a bunch of solid choices at RB. Besides, it's just 1 call-up.Comment

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Exactly, a rotating cast of defenders next to him, a bout with COVID, and an injury are among the things that have definitely affected TAA this season. Not to mention the mental strain of coming back in summer and playing practically every 3-4 days with only about a month for a break. Some players are going to handle that better than others. Sometimes it's also easy to forget that the guy is still only 22 years old.
I, for one, was glad he wasn't called up. I wish zero Liverpool players got called up. I think we've been over the absurdity of piling 3-match international breaks on to the already outrageous schedule.Comment

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
As good as TAA is, he happens to play in like the one position England has crazy depth, so if he isn't at his absolute best then there really isn't a huge point in bringing him when you've got Trippier performing at basically the same level TAA was at a season ago, Walker who is still very good, and you've got James as well now.
You definitely don't need to take 4 RBs to really anything. With that many quality RBs available, you can give a couple of them a rest, especially if any of them are below their usual standard.Comment

I honestly think he will end up in midfield down the road. He played there in the youth team before being converted to RB.Comment

Can't wait to see how rotated the Chelsea team is tomorrow for West Brom with Porto looming midweek.
Tell me again why the Prem voted down 5 subs????

Saying he has sucked this year is a huge stretch. His offensive output is lower because the forwards haven’t done their jobs. He’s creating chances at a similar level as usual. Defensively as well he’s actually been better than in the past, he just doesn’t have someone at the level of Gomez or Matip to cover him, or Henderson dropping in to help from midfield.
He probably doesn’t deserve to get in ahead of James, but he’s definitely still been better than AWB and Trippier have this season, especially considering Trippier’s ban. Walker always seems to be an afterthought as a RB for England and always ends up as a wide center back anyway. I’m glad he was not selected though, it gives him rest he definitely needs and wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

Disagree about Trippier though, he's been better than TAA this season, really he's been better than probably all the other English RBs. He's been crucial to an Atletico side that is leading the league, one of their best players overall.
You're probably right about Walker, he does seem to be played far more at CB for England than RB, even when RB options are low due to injury lol.Comment
