2022 has been a better year overall for me compared to 2021 but not as great as I was expecting. Had a five month (April through August) drought with no new game completions. Bright Memory Infinite released in July but I was 50/50 on it until yesterday when I decided to finally buy it. Finished it earlier today. Short but good sci-fi first person shooter.

My current game of the year is Dying Light 2 but im fully expecting God of War Ragnarok to replace it and is what im waiting for right now. One more week to go!!! Evil West and The Callisto Protocol will round out my ten games for the year.

Will save the three expansions that I have to play for January. 2023 is starting to look packed and im expecting several games to get a release date at The Game Awards on December 8th. 2023 will be starting strong for me and should end strong. Just hoping the middle is empty for me like this year was.

Re: 2022 gaming plans

For me, this simply was The Year of the Elden Ring. I spent half a year with this game, only here and there interrupted with more or less futile efforts to start some meaningful dynasties in either NHL 21, NBA 22 and even Madden 20, the last great Madden on last gen consoles.

Still, I could only resist for about a month after I was finally done with ER to start a new playthrough, this time with a STR/INT, melee focused build (instead of my previous INT/DEX build), beginning as a Lvl 1 wretch, and trying to get through every major boss without summons and using as few and as basic spells as possible.

Already beaten Margit, Godrick, Radagon Wolf, Renalla, Loretta and all the minor bosses in Limgrave and Liurnia, now going through Caelid. I am not looking forward to Redmane Castle at all. Still, beating a major boss without summons feels like a whole new level of incredible.

And though the frequency and lenght of my sessions have dropped significantly the last couple of weeks, I am in no hurry. I'll just continue whenever I get the itch, and will see where it takes me.

Other then Elden Ring, I also managed to finish couple of other games this year:

Code Vein - you'll never forget your first soulslike, and this one is as good as they come. Better, even, then Elden Ring, in more than a few ways.

Tiny Tina: Assault on Dragon Keep - while I have never played a Borderlands game before, the incoming Wonderlands had me seriously intrigued since it was announced. However, I quickly found out that this just wasn't for me. Mechanics and graphics are either bad or weird, story seemed to drag on forever... I managed to finish the game and it had some bright moments, the banter between Tina and her friends were mostly fun, but I was really exhausted and glad it's over in the end, so I am just thankful it saved me the money I would otherwise probably have doled out for the full game in the future.

Uncharted 4 - when it comes to story telling, nobody does it quite like Naughty Dog. I genuinely hate some of the gameplay mechanics that the Uncharted series provides, but the evolution of Nathan Drake from U1 to U4 is an incredible treat to watch / follow. I might like U3 over U4 a bit more overall, but the story alone in U4 takes the whole series to a completely different level.

Bai Qu: Hundreds of Melodies - story wise, this was the most heart-warming, heart-breaking, soul-touching game I have ever played this side of Last of Us. The game's actually a visual novel, but it does not detract from how soothing, calming it can be. While officially 8-12 hours long, I "played" this gem of a story from the end of last year to until probably mid-October, one hour here, two hours there, whenever I needed to ensure myself there's still some good in this world. Simply amazing.

I also tried to to get into Fallout 4 at the beginning of the year but something just didn't click, so I shelved the game pretty quickly, at least for the time being, and also started Red Dead Redemption 2 a week or so ago. Almost promptly turned the game off for good after I found out the game had no difficulty setting and I am still getting the controls down, head's spinning, so we'll see how it goes. Right now I feel like 50-50 between going all in and going the Fallout route. But I am pretty sure that's it as far as my 2022 gaming is concerned.

Oh yes, I also lost my mind and downloaded Bloodborne when it was last on PS sale, so maybe my 2022 gaming is not entirely over after all?

It was announced recently that Fall Out 4 is getting a next gen update next year, so you may wanna shelve it until then.

Re: 2022 gaming plans

We are closing n on the end of the year. I went into 2022 with high hopes, several high profile games slated for release and many others that I was interested in. A few big game delays have just generally thwarted my gaming this year.

Goals
Buy PS5 - Completed Early Jan
Buy/Build new PC - Maybe next year...
Complete a Total War Warhammer Campaign - COMPLETE! (It only took 6 years)

Games I planned to buy, but they have been delayed:

Forspoken - PS5/PC - (Delayed 2023)
Starfield - PC (Delayed 2023)
Hogwarts Legacy - (Delayed 2023)

Currently Playing
PC
OOTP 23 - I watched exactly 0 pitches of baseball this year (not including the ones that ESPN forced on me during college football games in September for Judge). I have enjoyed OOTP 23 though for letting me still live classic baseball.
Total War Warhammer 3 - Recent patches have made the game worth playing again.

Complete
Shredders Revenge (PC)
Total War Warhammer 2 (PC) - Mortal Empires Campaign
Tiny Tina's Wonderland (PC)

Games that I have queued up and play a bit here and there
Elder Scrolls Skyrim (PC)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PC) - Almost done with main game
The Outer Worlds (PC)
Control (PC)
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PC)
Spiderman Remastered (PS5)

Re: 2022 gaming plans

With a month to go, now seems like a good time to revisit.

I said I was content to stick with the PS4 Pro for another year. I was, but in September I finally made the jump to the PS5. No regrets there. Also upgraded my TV to an OLED, which has been a big improvement for gaming.

I also said I was hoping to avoid buying any new games. Close, but not quite.

PURCHASED
  • Mass Effect Trilogy (PS4)
  • Wolfenstein II The New Colossus (PS4)
  • NBA 2K22 (PS4)
  • Madden 23 (PS4)
  • MLB 21 (PS5)

Grabbed ME and W2 on sale, but haven't actually played either yet. Picked up 2K22 when it was on sale for $8. Huge upgrade over 2K21. Bought Madden when I still had a PS4, and I can't quite talk myself into buying it again for the PS5. I did upgrade MLB to the PS5. I'm now 362 games deep into my Braves dynasty. I hope to complete at least one more season. It's a strong contender for greatest sports game ever for me.

CURRENTLY PLAYING
  • MLB 21
  • NBA 2K22
  • Madden 23
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order

Started Wolfenstein years ago but never finished, so I'm giving it another go. I've got Old Blood and New Colossus lined up after it.

IN THE QUEUE
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • The Witcher III
  • Jedi Fallen Order
  • BioShock Trilogy

Most of this falls in 2023 Gaming Plans. Thanks to dual entitlement, I'm going to restart Kena, FF7 and JFO on the PS5. Already beat JFO on the PS4. Was close to finishing FF7 on the PS4 (and I did finish it way back in the day on the PS1). Still think Kena is a vastly underrated game. I always get overwhelmed with TW3, but I'm going to give it another try after the PS5 patch. Would like to replay BioShock again too. I still haven't finished BioShock 2.

Re: 2022 gaming plans

Finished in 2022:
- Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- MLB The Show 20 (went the full 162 + won World Series w/ the Tigers on All-Star w/ sliders)

Played/not completed:
- Madden 20
- Civilization 6 (although this is not even worth noting since I play this game a ton every year since it came out)

So, yeah...not super-productive on the year, but Breath of the Wild unexpectedly took up half my gaming year (what a tremendous game - one of the best I've ever played), and the latter half of the year was spent punching in holes in walls out of frustration of grounding into double plays on MLB The Show 20.

Re: 2022 gaming plans

So I went on a bit of a tear since I last posted at the end of September and finished five more games for a total of eight games completed in 2022. I think this is the first year in a long time I didn’t play any DLC which says a lot about the quality-to-price ratio of DLC these days.

Games Finished in 2022

Metro Exodus (PS5 -- Hardcore)

For me it had a very Half Like 2 feel (I’m showing my age) which I enjoyed -- A post-apocalyptic world with monsters where the human enemies are the real monsters. If you listen to the dialogue the characters around you are interesting but it can be easy to miss. I hadn’t played the earlier entries in this series but what I’ve read is that each of the three games is better than the previous one which is pretty rare. It also features a system which rewards you for not killing everyone which I liked. The only issue I had with it was that it was pretty obvious what was going to happen to one of the characters in the end. I saw it a mile away. I’d rate it 9 out of 10.

Unchartered: Lost Legacy (PS4 Plus – Hard)

This game, which doesn’t feature Nathan Drake, is very underrated. I think it had the best puzzles of the series and Naughty Dog is always excellent with cut scenes and story telling. The only drawbacks are that it is shorter than the other Unchartered games and the relationship between Chloe and Nadine is good but just isn’t as great as the relationship between Nathan and Victor which is probably one of my favourites. It's a must play if you enjoyed any game in the series (9/10)

Detroit: Become Human (PS4)

This was on my backlog for years but I never got around to finishing it until recently. That’s likely because the second half of the game is much better than the first half of the game. It’s a great story and the idea that robots will play a more significant role in our lives, appear more human like and be treated by most humans terribly is pretty realistic to me. It’s incredible how the story can branch out in so many directions. It’s a huge improvement on the groundwork the developer laid down with Heavy Rain. (9/10)

Deathloop (PC Game Pass)

I played this game almost every day for a few weeks which shows how addicting the game can be once you get started. The time loop system which still allows you to improve your powers and weapons with each loop was fun but still provided a significant challenge given the number of enemies. Some of the powers like pushing people were completely useless while other powers like having people fight each other were almost overpowering. The twist with Julianna was unexpected and the dialogue between her and you was entertaining. The main characters on the island that you need to kill were fairly interesting. I thought introducing a few more parts of the island (there are four large areas) would have been better and I wasn’t a big fan of the art style. High marks for originality (I know Twelve Minutes had a similar time loop but this was on a whole different level). (8/10)

Far Changing Tide (PC Game Pass)

Game Pass is great for allowing people to explore shorter games by small, independent developers. I guess I’m just spoiled by open world games because I find these smaller games harder to enjoy. This game had some interesting puzzles and upgrading and learning how to use the boat is fun but the story is so linear that I find it hard to praise. The boat goes forward or backward. That’s it. There are too many times where you’re absolutely doing nothing for a few minutes. Some people might enjoy that slow pace but it was a bit of a struggle for me to finish. (6.5/10)

Stray (PS5 Plus) (7/10)
Last of Us 2 (PS5/PS4 – Hard – Platinum Trophy) (10/10)
Watch Dogs (PS4 – Hard -- 93.8 per cent, Level 50) (9/10)

2022 Games Currently Playing

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (PC -- Hard) – Level 39, 29 per cent completed
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PS5 Plus -- Hard) – Power 36. Unlike everyone else I enjoy the tougher combat style
Cyperpunk 2077 (PC – Hard) -- Level 17
Dirt 5 (PS5 Plus)
Eden Ring (PC) – Level 50. Got burned out on it after being completely addicted when it first arrived.
Fallout 4 (PC -- Hard) -- Level 48. When will I ever complete this?
Far Cry 6 (PS5 – Hard). Love the Far Cry series but I’m finding this a bore.
Forza Horizon 5 (PC Game Pass)
Kentucky Route Zero (PC Game Pass) – Act 2, Scene 1
Immortals Fenyx Rising (PS4 – Hard). This was my most played game of 2022.
Ori and the Blind Forest (PC Game Pass)
Ratchet and Clank (PS5). Not feeling it
Spiderman (PS4 Plus -- Amazing Level) – 9 per cent completion
Tunic (PC Game Pass – Normal)
Watch Dogs 2 (PS4 Plus) – 10.04 per cent completion

Games on the Wishlist I Didn’t Get in 2022

Dying Light 2
God of War Ragnarok. Need to make room on the PS5 drive by finishing other games.
Horizon Zero 2 Forbidden West
Sniper Elite 5 (I feel like the minute I buy this it will end up on Gamepass)
Disco Elysium.

Sports Backlog

FIFA 22 (PS5) – Manchester United (16-3-4). Really enjoying the sliders I have.
FIFA 20 (PS4) – Fulham (13-1-2 in Championship)
FIFA 19 (PS4) – PSG (Second Season -- 6-0-2, Won SuperCup); Peru (0-1)

*MLB 21 (PS5) – Toronto (20-14), Buffalo (13-16), New Hampshire (5-0)
*MLB 20 (PS4) – Montreal (25-10)
*MLB 19 (PS4) – Milwaukee (31-28)
*MLB 17 (PS4) – NY Mets (11-14)
*MLB 16 (PS4) – Toronto (48-40)
*MLB 15 (PS4) -- Washington (43-47)
*MLB 14 (PS3) -- Los Angeles (26-15)
(I Play on All-Star level, every pitch)
Looking at this list, it’s doubtful I will complete any of these seasons by the end of 2023. Sad.

NHL 19 (PS4) – Toronto (1-9). I stink
