Bristol, South West England (AP) - Nottingham Forest played maybe their best match of the campaign on Tuesday evening in a 3-1 defeat of Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Three first half goals put Nottingham Forest in front and they were never threatened as they jumped back over .500 for the first time all season.
Bristol City came out pressing in the opening half and had some early chances with Nahki Wells twice just missing scoring opportunities in the opening twenty minutes.
But it was Lewis Grabban who got the scoring started in the 22nd minute on a tap in off of a rebound on a Brennan Johnson shot. It was Grabban's ninth goal on the campaign.
Bristol then turned up the heat and had a couple of great chances but MIlan Borjan thrawted those efforts to keep Nottingham Forest in front. Finally in the 39th minute Nottingham Forest made Bristol City pay on the counter attack as Joe Lolley scored with a blistering left footed crack into the top corner.
Brennan Johnson would make it 3-nil in the 42nd minute as Lewis Grabban dribbled into the box and two defenders went to him. He slipped the ball across to Johnson, who only had to tap it home to make it 3-nil.
Nottingham Forest would dominate possession in the second half playing a very conservative brand of keep away and Bristol City just could not get the ball. But they would get a last gasp chance in added time. Saikou Janneh broke down the left side, dribbled into the box and tried crossing it into Chris Martin, but Joe Worrall would deflect the pass into his own goal to ruin the clean sheet and at least get Bristol City on the score sheet.
James Garner had to be helped off of the pitch in the 72nd minute after a nasty tackle. He appeared to injure his knee and early reports out of the Nottingham Forest camp are that he will miss significant time.
Lewis Grabban earned Man of the Match honors for the third time this campaign with his goal and assist. He had a match rating of 7.3.
Bristol City (3-4-6, 13 pts) outshot Nottingham Forest 17-8 but only managed four shots on target. Forest blocked six shots as their back line was stellar. Nottingham Forest (6-2-5, 20 pts) held a 2-1 advantage in possession but held it for almost 75% of the second half.
Up next for Forest is a home match against title contender Fulham (9-2-2, 29 pts), who sit in third position, on Saturday afternoon at City Ground.
