How often truly does a mid-season trade for a SP help to get a team over the hump?

It depends on the pitcher honestly. Do you think a 2009 Phillies pitching staff of Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Happ and Brett Myers would make a WS. Add Cliff Lee to that staff and they are more likely and did make it. Also Cliff Lee trade to the Rangers probably helped them make it.

Re: 2015 MLB Trade Deadline

If the Yankees don't trade Severino or Judge this season, I'll consider it a win for the organization. They're 3 games up in a very winnable division, and I do think they need to add a pitcher, but it shouldn't be a top-flight one (Cueto, Hamels) at the expense of shipping off our top prospects.

I'm sure Cashman will pick up a mid-rotation guy, using Gary Sanchez (.258/.317/.471 with 12 HRs)

and Rob Refsynder as the centerpieces.

Report: Dodgers are prepared to trade Yasiel Puig.

Not surprised. The front office isn't enamored with him like Ned was. Wouldn't be shocked if we trade him for pitching.

Puig to the Mets? They have pitching.

Quite a few options out there. Mets, Reds, Royals, Orioles, Marlins, Phillies, Twins, Angels, Braves, Cubs all need an Outfielder of some sort and all have pitching to give up with the Cubs being the exception.

Puig to either the Royals or Angels would be scary.

Re: 2015 MLB Trade Deadline

Honestly I feel like Puig would be well served to play in a market that's baseball crazy but isn't exactly a super huge market. The Twins, Royals or Reds would be good places. I dunno if there'd be a fit for a trade that the Dodgers would want but I get the distinct feeling the're more inclined to take less in order to get rid of him.
