Of course, rules are to be interpreted on the field as well. And I think we all know if The Man Not In Ed Reed's League tries tackling anybody in that region, collar or shoulder pads, there will be a penalty.
Go re-read (or should that be "go read"...?) the Fox Sports story linked in the first post of this thread. It points out that the rule as written is somewhat ambiguous because it only applies if the ballcarrier is brought down "immediately" and then only if it happens in the open field.

That means that if a back is going through the line, and someone grabs him by the collar and yanks him backwards, no penalty will be called. If a defender grabs a player by the collar in the open field, but gets taken for a ride by the ballcarrier, then that's not a penalty either.

Still think this is solely about player safety?

1.) Why do you keep bringing up Brian Dawkins?

2.) Nice to keep going off-topic when you have nothing else to contribute

What's it for then...since you have your conspiracy helmet on and strapped tightly.

LOL, utexas kills me. I remember when we were talking about the Buckeyes and I was criticizing them, this dude comes in bitching about how I need to support my team all because I made some comment about Vince Young. He doesn't add anything to any discussions, just comes in to TRY and criticize people.

As I've said several times, I think this is another attempt by the league to increase scoring. This rule bascially forces a trailing defender to either take his chances and dive at the ballcarriers legs, or take a 15 yd penalty.

The only other alternative is that it really is about player safety. If so, it's an extremely poorly worded rule.

I guess someone didn't notice that those were replacements for his names, which were also attached to POINTS. Unlike your posts, which have nothing to do with the topic except to be evil because you can't handle this topic.

Anyways, I'm just glad they got rid of such a weak tackle. Maybe it will make Williams a better player for it. Take better angles on guys, Roy.

OK, but he apologized for the comment he made in this thread and both of the guys moved on. So why even bring this up, besides to shift this discussion back off-topic? Great job, really, great job.
