It certainly would have been nice to grandfather him and let him play, but oh well.

At least the guy is a class act.

“When I got drafted, I told people that I was going to have the best of both worlds,” Campbell said. “I was going to be in the United States Army, and I was going to have a chance to play professional football. Now, I have the best of one world and I’m very positive about that. It’s all going to work out. … I’m in great shape and I’m going to stay in great shape. I’m going to fulfill my duty to the United States Army and do what I’ve got to do. One day, hopefully, I’ll get another opportunity to play in the NFL.”

Re: Army Forces Capmbell to Give Up Football

Can someone explain this part from the Sportline story to me

Quote:
The Army wrote in its letter to Lions president Matt Millen that it acted in good faith.
Despite his disappointment, Campbell said he is "really excited" for his next assignment -- a year as a graduate assistant football coach for the Army, either at the U.S. Military Academy or the service academy's preparatory school.

After a year, he said, he will report to officer training.

So he has to give up football to go coach football for a year until he goes back into training?

Why not just send him straight to training and skip the whole G.A. football coach? Or does knowledge of the 3-4 defense help in places like Iraq?

My guess is that's the Army trying to "apologize" for the DoD decision. Remember it's the Army rule that let him get drafted, and it was overridden.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. You give the kid a shot and then at the last second AFTER he gets drafted you take it away from him.

Re: Army Forces Capmbell to Give Up Football

Chad Hennings had a good take on this on the Michael Irvin show (Hennings served 2 years in the Air Force after being drafted by the Cowboys in '89)

the podcast of Hennings is the second one down in the archive

Sorry about that. I'm not the sharpest on this type of thing. Just to clarify the DOD is the Department of Defense, right? And from what I gather from wikipedia they try to prevent interservice rivalry so they steped in so that the air force and navy wouldn't start arguing that the army football team gets better treatment? Or is there something that I'm missing? Thanks.
