From the perspective of Revis and his agent, the argument of if he's the best in the league was over the second Rex Ryan said he was to the media. From their point of view, Ryan is expressing the opinion of the Jets organization.

I believe the NFL has already taken steps to improve the rookie contract situation by limiting the length of the deals to 4 years. It used to be commonplace for teams to insist on 6 year deals, especially for later round selections.

Here's the thing. The Jets would easily make Revis the highest paid CB on the team and have offered him deals that would have. The problem isn't the Jets, its Revis' camp who believes he should be the highest paid CB in the league which isn't feasible on the Jets end since Asomougha's contract is so ridiculous that they won't give him more than that.

i agree with this. If Rex Ryan would stop saying Revis is the best defensive player in the league this may not have gone this far. Rex put the Jets in a corner.

this reminds me of the movie 'Mr. Deeds' Adam Sandler inherits the jets in that movie and the fictional star quarterback comes in demanding more money, Sandler knocks him out and then talks some sense into him... essentially saying that the QB wants more money than was agreed because he played better than was expected, BUT then sandler asks him if the team would be able to pay him less if he performed worse than expected...

But he probably is. While Woodson and Asomugha you could argue are better, nobody is more important to their team than Revis, due to their heavy blitzing schemes and need to rely on 1 on 1 coverage against the top WR so much.

No CB is worth $15 a year.

I'm the type that thinks players should mostly have incentive based contracts though. Players don't want that though because that means 5 years of actual hard work to earn you pay each year.

Re: Jets owner doesn't think Darrelle Revis will play this year

If anybody has looked at Aso's Contract, remember that before he got his deal that the Raiders were basically franchising him every year, which means he was making about $16 Mil a year. If you look at his contract now, it's actually no different than before because he's still making the same amount he would've made before he signed but the only difference is that he got 3 years added to it. So basically, he's signed a 3 year "Franchise Tag" Deal, if that makes sense.

But didn't Revis holdout for his first contract and now he's holding out again? Again, the Jets shouldn't have approached him about it in the first place if they knew nothing would get done but at the sametime, Revis really has no leverage at this point to be holding out nor does it put him any closer to becoming a FA, if that's what he wanted to do.
