Re: Are players being over payed???

I don't know what people think would happen if there was some kind of cap on how much an individual player was paid. That money wouldn't go to charity or to increase teacher salaries, it would go to making the owners richer than they already are.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I hate when people say athletes are overpaid.

They chose to pursue a profession where millions of people pay to watch them work, and they succeeded at it. Good for them.

I have no sympathy for the owners either. They both make too much. I have no sympathy for capitalists (note capitalist in this context is what a teacher is to teaching, a tailor is to tailoring, a fisherman is to fishing. It is an occupation and not to be confused with the context of capitalism vs socialism etc. I want to make that clear as otherwise that sentence takes on a completely different meaning) who overindulge in the idea of mass acquisition of wealth for private squandering. Not saying they don't have a right to it, I just choose not to agree.

Are teams paying too much for unproven players? Sure, but if that team didn't sign him, another would give him almost as much.

In general, are they being overpayed? No. As long as the fans are watching on TV (driving up ad sales) and buying merchandise, the teams are going to have that kind of money to spend. It's the way the economy works... Almost like supply and demand. The demand for quality NFL games and teams is so high (as evidenced by TV ratings, ticket prices and merch sales) so the "supply" (the players) can ask for more money.

I'm pretty sure that's how its always been. The players always got X % of league revenue. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the owners reduced that % in the last CBA claiming they weren't making as much money. The significant thing they did was change the rookie pay scale and free up more money for veterans.

It was never all revenue like it is as of the new CBA.

I don't think necessarily in those terms, but as teams overpaying certain individuals compared to others at the same position. Like Joe Flacco getting paid the highest paid QB.

Those kind of comparisons typically have to suspend a number of facts to hold up though and are only true in a specific context. Large contracts don't go from start to finish without being touched again, and much, much more often than not result in a release or restructure within a couple of/few years.

Salaries are just a matter of the combination of leverage, need and talent in a particular moment.
