"Gimme a Hell Yeah": 2K Announces Stone Cold Steve Austin as WWE 2K16 Cover Superstar

WWE Hall of Famer, film and television personality, producer and podcasting innovator set to inject Texas-sized attitude in flagship WWE video game franchise

2K today announced WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin® as the cover Superstar for WWE® 2K16, the forthcoming release in the flagship WWE franchise. After setting the WWE Universe on fire during one of WWE’s most celebrated time periods – the “Attitude Era” – to his wealth of television, film and podcasting accomplishments, Austin has amassed worldwide admiration through his unequivocal presence both in and out of the WWE ring. WWE 2K16 is currently in development for Xbox One and Xbox 360, as well as the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems. The game is scheduled for release on October 27, 2015 in North America and October 30, 2015 internationally.

"I’ve had the privilege of working with 2K to support the WWE 2K franchise, and now I’m absolutely honored to serve as the WWE 2K16 cover Superstar,” said Stone Cold Steve Austin. “No disrespect to the previous and extremely deserving WWE 2K cover Superstars – Dwayne ‘The Rock®’ Johnson and John Cena® – but it’s about time the franchise raised some hell with yours truly on the cover. I look forward to injecting a dose of ‘Texas Rattlesnake’ into this year’s game and overall campaign."

Austin is regarded by many as one of the most popular WWE Superstars to ever enter a WWE ring, holding 21 championships throughout his career and being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. His relentless work ethic has also made him a significant mainstream fixture and pop-culture icon as an actor, producer and host in television, film and podcasting. Austin hosted the return of WWE’s reality competition series Tough Enough on USA Network in 2011, and since 2012 has hosted four seasons of Redneck Island on CMT. He also serves as the host of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge, which is currently in production for its third season on CMT. His film credits include appearances in several feature films, including The Longest Yard, The Condemned and The Expendables, while his no-holds-barred weekly podcast, The Steve Austin Show, regularly appears on the Top Podcasts list within the Sports & Recreation category on iTunes. He also hosts the Stone Cold Podcast, Live!, a monthly interview series on the award-winning WWE Network, where he has interviewed several special guests including Vince McMahon, Triple H and Paul Heyman. In addition, Austin is a brand ambassador for Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA.

“Stone Cold Steve Austin’s iconic style, unmistakable personality and worldwide reverence from the WWE Universe make him the ideal fit for WWE 2K16,” said Chris Snyder, Vice President of Marketing at 2K. “Not only will Austin grace the video game’s cover, but he’s involved in shaping its creative direction. Through his numerous contributions, inclusion on the largest roster in franchise history and the game’s to-be-announced features, WWE 2K16 is certain to put everyone on notice.”

Developed collaboratively by Yuke’s and Visual Concepts, a 2K studio, WWE 2K16 is not yet rated by the ESRB. WWE 2K16 is currently scheduled for release on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4™ and PS3™ on October 27, 2015 in North America and October 30, 2015 internationally.

Great! I haven't been a fan of wrestling since the mid 90's to early 2000's. It's unbearable more me to watch now. I cant name a single superstar from this period outside of Lesnar and Cena. I loved the Attitude Era, though. The more superstars and venues we have from that era, the more likely I am to buy. They don't have to retell those old storylines; let me create my own in universe mode. It'd be cool to create a universe featuring the stars (my favorite) from that period on these more powerful consoles.

Glad to see Stone Cold on the cover, just hope they focus more on the guys and girls we have now. For the same reasons as Wisco said. As someone who posts their Universe on here I would rather have more current wrestlers than old ones. But they say this is the "largest roster" to date so we will have to wait and see on that respect. End of the day it's just a cover

Reed is comin' atcha!!

It seems to be pretty split down the middle as for what gamers want from wwe 2k16. Some want a larger current rosters while others want a roster filled with legends. I think a lot depends on age and what modes you like to play. Me being a gamer pushing 40 I prefer the legends. I think I prefer them in my wrestling game the same way I prefer them in my NBA 2k games and that is to bring me back to a time where I really enjoyed the sport. It gives me a chance to relive classic match ups and also create my own. Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate the current state of the WWE but it sure doesn't match up or equal anything I grew up watching. Keep putting in legends and classic game modes 2k and you'll get my money every year, if you stop though then I stop as well.

Now Austin on the cover....about Damn time! What if the game mode was an Austin history timeline? Covering his run as US Champ in WCW against Steamboat, Dustin Rhodes, and Barry Windham...(it would be sweet if they could get Windham and Bobby Eaton in the game) then all they way up through his rise in WWE. That would be an awesome game mode and it would cover a lot of different wrestling eras.

Me personally, I like a good legends roster. But, the more current a roster is, the better. I would love if more NXT stars make it in this year, given that NXT is the future of WWE. The 120+ unique superstars/divas have me pumped for this year because it gives the possibility of more legends and NXT stars. I would be totally sold if Universe Mode, Career Mode, and Creation Suite were vastly improved. I think 2K is getting the WWE 2K series close to NBA 2K level if we give them time.

I love Austin being on the cover, but I think, much like NBA 2K16 with Jordan, that Austin should be on the special edition and have a current star like Brock be on the regular cover.

I personally love and will always love the attitude era....the only reason wwe falls on the past is cause the present isn't up to par with the middle aged /older wrestling fans. This will always be a big money maker, they will never big numbers with the current wwe roster (excluding nxt which is amazing right now) maybe when more nxt talent gets on the main roster with some good storylines then wwe will be in a lot of conversations like it was during the attitude era.

Interesting. I'll bet they're intentionally playing to those rumors that Stone Cold will wrestle one last match at Wrestlemania 32. Heck, this may well tie in to that.

Love Stone Cold and the AE, but it's time to move on. Brock or all 3 Shield members could've done the job. This reeks of trying to recreate NBA 2K11.

# 28 Trent Booty @ 07/06/15 02:54 PM
Like this, next year will be Lesnar or the Shield guys

They have more than enough talent right now it's just that Vince has completely lost it, and WWE becoming a publicly traded company who has to stay PG isn't helping matters. WWE has become what they used to make fun of WCW for being(an out of touch company that puts it's best talent in the midcard and promotes old timers when it matters most).

Why not put THE BEAST Brock Lesnar on the cover? He's the biggest star in the company today. I'm a huge SCSA mark, but man, I don't know what else 2K can do to cover the Attitude Era that hasn't already been done. I guess we'll find out.

100% Agree with that

I don't mint Stone Cold being on the cover or having the showcase focus on him. I rarely play the showcases anyway. For those worried about the roster size, 2K has already announced they're going to have 125 unique characters, and no that's not 4 John Cena's, 3 Randy Orton's etc etc. Roster size this time around I'm not concerned about. I more concerned about MyCareer mode. I hope they add so much more to it and actually have storylines that trigger instead of Vicky has nothing for you. I also want tag matches in MyCareer and gimmick matches as well. If that part of the game is focused on and better, than I'm all in on this years version.

# 33 Side Effect @ 07/06/15 04:22 PM
Don't mind too much that Stone Cold is on the cover and Attitude Era will be featured. But I feel Seth Rollins or Brock Lesnar were very deserving of making the cover this year. Would be cool to have a 2 sided flippable cover like WWE 2K14.

# 34 jpollack34 @ 07/06/15 05:07 PM
I only care about the Legends. As long as there is a good amount of golden era wrestlers then I will be getting it. Or at the least a very deep editor and lots of customization options.

# 35 Blasian @ 07/06/15 05:11 PM
I'm glad Austin is on the cover. I can't stand today's roster but I love wrestling video games. I need legends in the game.

# 36 countryboy @ 07/06/15 06:49 PM
I really don't care who is on the cover, but I am hopeful, with a 120 roster out of the gate that we have quite a few legends. I don't watch wrestling anymore so I really don't know who is who but I love the older guys and always make them have their own show.

# 37 Caveman24 @ 07/06/15 07:55 PM
Tired of sports games continuing this trend of going to the past. Attitude Era was great and all but what about my era? What about giving back full customization, giving CAW a much needed update, recognition of Efeds, a full current WWE roster( not 10 Triple H's.) The gameplay is great but they literally stripped the game down naked.

Another remake of legends that will be shoved down our throats. Yet, we'll still have incomplete rosters for current guys. Seth Rollins should've got the cover and we should looking toward the future not the past.

# 38 countryboy @ 07/06/15 08:13 PM
I'm curious, how many wrestlers would make up the current roster?

# 39 BDKiiing @ 07/06/15 08:52 PM
I'll be honest. I'd rather have Reigns on the cover of 2K16 than Austin. You have to push the current talent. Golden era guys are boring, the attitude era is overrated. Worry about those after a fully complete current roster is done, just like every other sports game.

# 40 RayRay34 @ 07/06/15 09:02 PM
Attitude era was over rated......? Ummmmm get WWE network and watch some of it. If the current WWE is going to keeping pushing lame *** stories like they are now and limiting their good technical wrestlers to doing safe moves then what is the PG era in your eyes? Probably the best thing ever right?? Attitude era over rated..... You can join my kiss my *** club.
