1918 - Year In Review
In the American League, the Boston Red Sox won the American League pennant with almost two weeks remaining in the schedule and eventually winning by 15 games over Chicago. Boston's good fortune, after dropping to the second division in 1917, lay in having Babe Ruth. The strong man moved off the mound and into left field and responded by hitting 20 home runs and batting .328, winning the Outstanding Hitter Award. He was also helped by Tris Speaker (.323-3-97) in leading the Red Sox attack. Dutch Leonard (24-7, 2.22 ERA) and midseason acquired "Big" Ed Klepfer (24-11, 2.61 ERA) each won 24 games, with Leonard winning the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process, to lead the mound staff. The White Sox were tied with Boston entering July but wiltered in the heat and finished in second place. Edd Roush (.336-1-69) and Buck Weaver (.290-4-70) led the way at the plate while 22-game winner Joe Benz (22-14, 2.72 ERA) and Phil Douglas (19-13, 2.18 ERA) led the pitching staff. The New York Yankees ended the season in third place, 19 games behind the Red Sox, thanks to the hitting of Joe Harris (.343-0-53), Tilly Walker (.281-8-64) and trade deadline acquisition Elmer Smith (.309-8-47) led the way at the dish with Urban Shocker (17-12, 2.14 ERA) leading the mound staff.
In the National League, the New York Giants grabbed the lead late in May and waltzed home with the pennant by the time the final week rolled around. Their NL leading hitting attack was led by the trio of Jack Fournier (.369-0-73), Zack Wheat (.347-5-97) and Ross Youngs (.347-3-96) and the staff was led by the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, Clint Rogge (28-6, 2.45 ERA), who was also named Rookie of the Year. The defending world champion St.Louis Cardinals finished in second place thanks to the 1-2-3 punch at the plate of Joe Jackson (.349-7-61), Eddie Collins (.311-5-55) and Rogers Hornsby (.290-11-75), and the arms of 20-game winners Bob Steele (21-9, 2.03 ERA), Claude Hendrix (20-15, 2.40 ERA) and Pol Perritt (20-11, 2.27 ERA). The Brooklyn Robins end the season in third place, 11 games behind the Giants, thanks to the bats of Bobby Veach (.335-1-71) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Ty Cobb (.388-6-85) plus the arm of Ray Caldwell (17-16, 3.00 ERA). The Giants opened the World Series by sweeping the first two games at Fenway Park, 8-3 and 2-1, thanks to the pitching of Dick Rudolph and Red Ames. When the series headed to the Polo Grounds, the Red Sox took the first two games, 7-1 and 7-6 behind the pitching of Carl Mays and Ed Klepfer, to even the series before New York took game five, 4-3, to take a 3 games to 2 lead back to Boston. The Red Sox tied the series at 3 games apiece as Carl Mays outlasted Dick Rudolph, 5-4, and in the deciding game seven,, Red Ames and Ed Klepfer battled to a 2-2 duel before Babe Ruth sent the Fenway fans home with the world's championship with a home run in the bottom of the 9th to give Boston a 3-2 win. 1919 - Year In Review
In the shortened 140-game season both pennant races turned into photo finishes between the top two teams in each league. In fact, it was so close in the American League that they decided to play an extra game as the defending Boston Red Sox and the St.Louis Browns ended with identical 85-55 records. St.Louis scored twice in the 4th and 5th innings then held on to win the game, 6-3, behind the pitching of Walter Johnson. Boston had come back from 6 games out on Labor Day to tie St.Louis on the final day of the season before falling in the extra game. The Browns were led by the bats of George Sisler (.367-12-96) and Dave Robertson (.308-11-81) with Cy Williams also reaching double digits in home runs (10) and driving in 103 runs for added support. Besides Walter Johnson (18-8, 2.36 ERA), the mound staff was led by Jeff Pfeffer (22-10, 2.23) and Earl Hamilton (17-7, 2.74). The second place Red Sox were led at the plate by the bats of Jake Daubert (.331-2-62), Tris Speaker (.306-1-75) and record setting slugger Babe Ruth (.363-35-119), the AL's Outstanding Hitter. They were led on the hil by the arms of Dutch Leonard (19-14, 3.01 ERA), Rookie of the Year Rollie Naylor (16-11, 2.81 ERA) and the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher, Babe Adams (26-8, 2.24 ERA). The Detroit Tigers finished in third place, their highest finish since 1910, a distant 13 1/2 games behind the Browns thanks to the hitting of Baby Doll Jacobson (.361-6-81), Fred Nicholson (.350-8-81) and Harry Heilmann (.304-7-40) and the arm of Lefty Williams (16-13, 2.61 ERA).
The National League's defending New York Giants had their hands full this season as the St.Louis Cardinals made a serious threat to dethrone them. Seven games behind on Labor Day, the Cardinals flew back to within 1.5 games as the season headed into the final three days of the season. The Giants won their game on Saturday while the Cardinals lost theirs as New York clinched the top spot in the standings for the second straight season and third in four years. New York was led at the plate by Ross Youngs (.342-6-56), Zack Wheat (.328-5-95) and the NL's Rookie of the Year, Frankie Frisch (.290-8-67). The pitching staff was led by a pair of 20-game winners, Rube Benton (21-8, 3.19 ERA) and Grover Alexander (20-11, 2.73 ERA) and 17-game winner Dick Rudolph (17-12, 3.30 ERA). St.Louis finished three games behind in second place thanks to hitters Benny Kauff (.334-12-80), Rogers Hornsby (.321-8-68) and the senior circuit's Outstanding Hitter, Joe Jackson (.382-9-101) and the arms of 20-game winners Stan Coveleski (20-7, 2.15 ERA) and Claude Hendrix (25-4, 1.90 ERA), the NL's Outstanding Pitcher. The Boston Braves, led by the bat of Harry Hooper (.291-6-81) and the arm of Art Nehf (20-12, 3.12 ERA), and the Pittsburgh Pirates, led by the hitting of Jack Tobin (.352-8-83) and Frank Baker (.286-11-82) plus the pitching of 16-game winners Al Mamaux (16-11, 3.72 ERA) and Bob Shawkey (16-14, 3.49 ERA), ended in a dead heat for third place, 17 games behind, with identical 71-69 records. The World Series, experimentally expanded to nine games, was also down to the wire. The Giants bolted out to a 3 games to 1 advantage before the Browns won the next three games to take the lead, 4 games to 3. New York, behind the pitching of Reb Russell and Grover Alexander, won the next two games to give the Giants the world's championship. Code:
