1920 - Year In Review
The baseball world was stunned as a lengthy investigation found that as many as ten players had taken money from others in return for throwing games. The baseball world was also told that there will now be a Commissioner of Baseball instead of a committee. Judge Kenesaw M. Landis was named as the first Commissioner. The office of the Commissioner announced that the following ten players are hereby banned from playing major league baseball: Ed Cicotte, Joe Jackson, Lefty Williams, Chick Gandil, Swede Risberg, Fred McMullin, Happy Felsch, Hal Chase, Heinie Zimmerman and Lee Magee. An eleventh player, Buck Weaver, was also banned due to his knowning of players around the majors who were throwing games and did not notify the repective owners of this fact.
On the field, it was the same old story except that the owners have issued a livelier ball to be used. The Boston Red Sox started out of the gates slow but took the lead by the beginning of June and never looked back, eventually winning by 18 games. The AL's Outstanding Hitter, Babe Ruth (.419-58-181) led the way at the plate along with Tris Speaker (.361-9-88) and Larry Gardner (.358-3-122). In fact, Babe Ruth slugged more home runs than eleven teams in the majors. The Red Sox's pitching staff was led by Grover Alexander (22-10, 3.63 ERA), Jesse Haines (22-13, 3.82 ERA) and the league's Outstanding Pitcher, Babe Adams (24-7, 3.41 ERA). The Detroit Tigers ended the season in second place and were led by the bats of Fred Nicholson (.350-16-100), Baby Doll Jacobson (.333-9-95) and Harry Heilmann (.317-12-115) while Wilbur Cooper (17-17, 3.19 ERA) led Detroit's mound staff. The Chicago White Sox finished a distant third, 22 games behind the Red Sox, as Edd Roush (.356-3-82), Steve O'Neill (.344-3-87), Braggo Roth (.310-9-59) and Wally Pipp (.256-15-85) led the way offensively and they were also led by the arms of 20-game winners Frank Miller (21-12, 2.93 ERA) and Phil Douglas (20-14, 2.95 ERA). In the senior circuit, the St.Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates were in a tight 3-way battle up to the last week of the season. The Giants were eliminated first then it wasn't until the next to last day of the season that the Pirates were able to hold off the Cardinals to win their first NL pennant. Jack Tobin (.372-10-92) and Cotton Tierney (.353-5-82) were the Bucs' leading hitters while their pitching staff was led by 22-game winner Burleigh Grimes (22-9, 3.45 ERA), the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, and a pair of 18-game winners, Elmer Ponder (18-11, 3.30 ERA) and Bob Shawkey (18-9, 4.35 ERA). The Redbirds finished in second place, 3 games behind, thanks to the hitting of the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Rogers Hornsby (.416-14-133), along with Eddie Collins (.363-8-95) and Shano Collins (.311-4-61) and the pitching of Stan Coveleski (18-11, 3.29 ERA) and Ray Caldwell (17-9, 2.97 ERA). New York ended the season in third place, 7 games in back of the Pirates, thanks to the bats of Ross Youngs (.365-6-76), Zack Wheat (.331-10-106) and Frankie Frisch (.330-12-61) and the arms of Waite Hoyt (19-14, 3.53 ERA) and Ferdie Schupp (18-12, 3.89 ERA). The World Series, another best of nine contest, was won by the Red Sox, 5 games to 3. Babe Ruth became the first player to belt 3 home runs in a single series game and also had 4 home runs for the series. Grover Alexander and Jesse Haines each won two games. Code:
