1921 - Year In Review
As the AL season unfolded, the Boston Red Sox were scoring runs at a record setting pace but were trailing the Cleveland Indians by 3.5 games heading into July. The Red Sox continued scoring runs and overtook Cleveland by 5.5 games by the end of the month. From then on, Boston just pulled away as they repeated as AL champions and clinched the title halfway through September. Babe Ruth continued to astound the baseball world with a .388-55-192 performance to win the junior circuit's Outstanding Hitter Award. Ruth's supporting cast included Tris Speaker (.408-8-117), Les Nunamaker (.388-0-68) and Larry Gardner (.313-5-121). The unheralded Red Sox pitching staff turned in a great performance as all four starters were in the top four spots in ERA. Babe Adams (30-6, 2.88 ERA) became the first pitcher in the AL to win 30 games since Cy Young did it back in 1907 and won the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award. The other three starters, Grover Alexander (25-9, 3.57 ERA), Dutch Leonard (21-10, 3.41 ERA) and Jesse Haines (21-12, 3.45 ERA), each won over 20-games as well. The Cleveland Indians finished in second place, 20 games behind, thanks to the bats of Ty Cobb (.391-8-86), Irish Meusel (.336-15-118) and "Highpockets" Kelly (.287-23-134) along with the AL's top rookie, Riggs Stephenson (.323-9-94). Their mound staff was led by Sam Jones (24-10, 3.63 ERA) and 19-game winner George Uhle (19-13, 4.05 ERA). The Detroit Tigers ended the season in third place, a distant 29 games behind, behind the bats of Baby Doll Jacobson (.367-9-107), Fred Nicholson (.354-18-83) and Harry Heilmann (.354-17-100) and the arm of Wilbur Cooper (21-15, 4.11 ERA).
In the National League, the New York Giants won for the 13th time since 1901 but had to fight back a tough Pittsburgh Pirates squad and clinched the title with only two days remaining. Jack Fournier (.359-23-139), Elmer Smith (.350-26-115) and Ross Youngs (.348-10-95) led the hitting attack while the pitching staff was led by Waite Hoyt (22-12, 3.86 ERA). The Pirates finished the season only 3-games behind thanks to the hitting of Jack Tobin (.382-15-114) and Cy Williams (.344-24-102) and the arms of Burleigh Grimes (20-14, 3.47 ERA) and Bob Shawkey (19-14, 3.81 ERA). The St.Louis Cardinals ended the season in third place, 7 games behind Pittsburgh, as the NL' Outstanding Hitter, Rogers Hornsby (.400-26-113) led the way at the plate with supporting help from Austin McHenry (.361-14-109). The Cardinals' pitching staff was led by 20-game winner Stan Coveleski (22-9, 3.05 ERA), the league's Outstanding Pitcher. The 7th Red Sox-Giants saga got off to a surprising start as the Giants took the opening game, 5-2, behind the pitching of George Smith. The Red Sox came storming back by taking the next four games, 15-5, 7-6, 12-4 and 6-3, to take a commanding 4 games to 1 lead in the best of nine series. Rosy Ryan's pitching in game #6, and the hitting of former Red Sox player Zack Wheat (2 HRs) in game #7 pulled the Giants to within a game of evening the series but the Red Sox took an early 6-0 lead in game #8 and took the world's championship with a 6-4 win. 1922 - Year In Review
As the Roaring Twenties were reaching full stride, baseball too, hypoed it's activity by spicing the 1922 season with 1.191 homers, a remarkable feat when compared to five years ago. Although the slightly lively ball in 1909 started a slow rise in the home run totals, it was the outlawing of the spitball and other trick pitches in 1920 and 1921 which was responsible for the skyrocketing increases in home run production.
In the American League, the Cleveland Indians, led by three eventual 100-RBI men in George Kelly, Irish Meusel and Ty Cobb, made a run early in the season to pull to within 4 of the front running Red Sox by the beginning of June. The Red Sox, led by the AL's Outstanding Hitter, Babe Ruth (.393-55-181), Tris Speaker (.362-9-126) and Ray Grimes (.334-11-130), pulled away from Cleveland and clinched the AL pennant with two weeks remaining. The pitching staff was led by a trio of 20-game winners: Babe Adams (22-13, 3.24 ERA), Mule Watson (21-10, 3.38) and Grover "Pete" Alexander (26-7, 2.88 ERA), the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher. Cleveland finished in second place, 13 games behind, thanks to the bats of the players previously mentioned along with the arms of Whitey Glazner (23-11, 4.12 ERA) and Sam Jones (22-10, 3.54 ERA). The Detroit Tigers fell behind by 19.5 games around Labor Day but clawed their way up to a third place finish, 14 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Harry Heilmann (.3996-22-140), George Harper (.322-3-101) and Baby Doll Jacobson (.310-3-89) and the pitching of Lil Stoner (21-12, 4.01 ERA). The National League race was dominated by the New York Giants, who led all year and held an eight-game margin at the finish. Zack Wheat (.359-16-101), Frankie Frisch (.347-11-88) and Jack Fournier (.341-17-113) led a team attack which finished with a .315 batting average. Ace pitcher Waite Hoyt (25-8, 3.54 ERA) and Rosy Ryan (18-7, 3.49 ERA) led the mound staff. Rogers Hornsby, the NL's Outstanding Hitter, singlehandedly kept the Cardinals in the first division and led them to a second place finish by hitting .394, belting 35 home runs and driving in 137 runs, good enough to win two of the three Triple Crown categories. The Red Sox came into the World Series with high hopes of three-peating and did just that as they won the world's championship for the third straight time, four games to two. Code:
