Tovarich: The score makes that look easier than it was. But we had a lot of things go our way. Their FR PG couldn't handle the press. He was a turnover machine. We got their two best big guys in foul trouble from breaking their press and they had nothing down low defensively to stop Shehan. Still dominated rebounds though, as you'd expect. We needed most of those 20 turnovers as they shot over 50%. Good to be in the Sweet 16 though. I'm somewhat surprised. We had the hardest second round on paper of the 1 seeds for the second year in a row.
Reporter: At first this game had a fast pace, then you slowed it down toward the end?
Tovarich: Their press was relentless in the first half, but they finally figured out that was a bad idea. All the fouls they accumulated with their big guys ended that. We ran up and down with them early in the 2nd but I could see the lead gradually slipping away, so I figured it was time to limit possessions.
Reporter: Despite their big guys in foul trouble, they outrebounded you easily still, is that a concern?
Tovarich: I gave up on rebounding. UCLA will surely have someone who will dominate the boards.
Reporter: You said this season was all about getting to the Sweet 16. Do you still feel that way now that you're there?
Tovarich: Sure. We're not as talented as Georgia Tech, and we're sure less talented than UCLA. We'll be a sizable underdog.
Tovarich: It was fun to play the Lakers. It took about 2 possessions to figure out the script had already been written on this one. Shehan goes up for a layup and gets called for goaltending on his own shot when the ball never left his hand. His second shot was blocked. His third shot was blocked. His 4th was over the cylinder on its way down and gets swatted away but no goaltending was called. Tamayo missed his first 8 3's. They started 9/10 with an offensive rebound. We only twice the entire game scored 2 baskets in a row. Rebounding was of course impossible. Shooting from anywhere was pretty much impossible unless we were behind by 20 or more. It's beyond frustrating to sit through when you know nothing can be done about it but watch the other team throw alley-oops from half court that are impossible to stop.
Reporter: When you scored with 3.7 seconds, did you think they'd make 2 quick passes to shoot a 3 off at the buzzer?
Tovarich: Oh, yes. It's part of the pattern. His coach programmed him like that, so he had to score last. Same for the first half. They got the rebound with 4 seconds to go and somehow someone was already across half court waiting for a pass to shoot one more in before the break.
Reporter: What's your future?
Tovarich: I have no idea. We'll see who calls. I don't see how I can put together a better roster than this here, and it's non-competitive in the sweet 16. I've had 3 pretty loaded rosters here and we're 3-3 in the tournament. It's likely peaked and nothing more can be accomplished here than that.
