Lakers are taken to the limit and come out victorious against Rockets
Lakers let defense do the work in the fourth as Bryant heats up

LOS ANGELES - Another thrilling and exiciting Western Conference matchup involving the Lakers was witnessed again by a soldout crowd at STAPLES Center with Kobe Bryant providing the closing theatrics and on the other end of was a familiar face, James Harden. Harden, who had built his success as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder and their undeniable sixth man for the first four years of his career knows what its like to be on the end of a Kobe Bryant performance and also what its like to deny Kobe those performances. Days before the season started Harden was traded by the Thunder to the Houston Rockets and upon being introduced immediately signed a five year contract extension as the Rockets made it known that Harden was the cornerstone of what they hoped would begin to build a title contender. Joining Jeremy Lin in the backcourt Harden and the Rockets expectations have gone up since the season started, but against the Lakers no matter what uniform Harden is wearing, it seems that Kobe Bryant is going to make it hard for Harden to get an advantage. Kobe Bryant scored a team high 19 points for the Lakers, but it was his fourth quarter scoring in the final four minutes that was focused on as Bryant proceeded to score the Lakers last 14 points and will his team to an 89-86 victory over Houston. On a night where both Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard were ineffective offensively, Metta World Peace stepped up and provided some scoring punch finishing with 14 points and grabbing 6 rebounds and off the bench Antawn Jamison added 12 points, including 3-5 from the three point line. James Harden led the Rockets with a game high 22 points and also had 5 assists, but in those last four minutes when Bryant took over, Harden was not to be found, finishing the game going 0-5 from the field in that span and was 6-13 overall from the field for the game. Marcus Morris off the bench added 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, hitting 7-9 shots from the field in 19 minutes and Omer Asik added 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 block shots in a losing effort. The Lakers were almost lost without their inside game, finishing with just a mere 18 points in the paint and only 4 second chance points and were outrebounded by the Rockets 53-43. The Lakers however were able to avoid those downfalls, by forcing the Rockets into 25 turnovers that they turned into 21 points. The win improved the Lakers to 4-1 on their home stand and 6-4 overall while the Rockets (5-5) fell back to .500. The Lakers will wrap up their home stand on Tuesday when they host the Brooklyn Nets.

Lakers wrap up home stand with gritty victory over new look Nets
Bryant puts up season high 35 points in grind out fashion

LOS ANGELES - The Lakers wrapped up their long regular season home stand in dramatic fashion and it came at the expense of the new looked Brooklyn Nets. Kobe Bryant from the opening tip at that killer look in his eye and he was as aggressive as we've seen him in this early season as he led the Lakers to a grind out win over the visiting Nets, 99-94. Neither team had a lead bigger then 7 points throughout the game and the Nets were in control from the second quarter up til about midway through the fourth quarter where the Lakers defense turned up a notch and was swarming all over the Nets creating havoc left and right. Despite an outstanding performance by Joe Johnson and stellar play by Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez, the Nets just didn't hit the shots down the stretch when it was needed and the Lakers had the answer on their side and a few helpful partners along the way. Kobe Bryant put in a game high and season high 35 points, being extremely aggressive, starting in the second quarter and right on through the fourth. Bryant found his way to the basket time and time again and attacked early and often resulting in going 15-15 from the free throw line and also dished out 7 assists. Dwight Howard who had a quiet first half, made his prescence known in the second half, setting the crowd into a frenzy with thunderous dunk after dunk and finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 block shots. Pau Gasol added 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 block shots of his own and Steve Nash scored 9 of his 12 points in the final quarter including the go ahead three pointer that gave the Lakers the lead for good. Joe Johnson led the Nets with a team high 23 points, hitting 10-22 shots from the field, but only scored 2 points in the final 14 minutes. Gerald Wallace added 15 points and 7 rebounds while Brook Lopez put in 14 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort. Point guard Deron Williams handed out a game high 13 assists, but was just 4-9 from the field en route to just 8 points for the game. The Lakers trailed by as many as seven points for most of the second quarter til midway through the fourth primarily because of their inability to control the boards as the Nets collected 14 offensive rebounds that resulted in 12 second chance points, which once the Lakers were able to put a stop to gave them control of the game. The Lakers finished the six game home stand with a 5-1 record and will now set out for a brief three game road trip to the Midwest before returning home to finish out the month against the Pacers and Nuggets.

In the clutch, Kobe Bryant answers the Lakers call for teams first road win of the year
Game on the line and Lakers star proves again why he is still the closer in the league

SACRAMENTO - They say that wine gets better with age, so does fine china, but when it comes to Kobe Bryant, age is undefined because entering his 17th year in the league and logging the thousands of minutes on the court when healthy and when nursing injury after injury after injury, there is nobody in the game better in the clutch and it doesn't look like anyone is even close to coming to a replacement.  Kobe Bryant has made adjustments to his game since the season started.  Taking less shots now that he has a round of all-stars and future hall of famers surrounding him and also because he reads and reacts to what the defense is giving up and taking away.  His numbers for the season across the board are the lowest they've been since his rookie year, but Kobe isn't interested in winning score titles (although he has 2 to his impressive accolades), he'll tell you that he's concerned with one title and thats a championship title, but there will be times througout this season when Kobe Bryant will have revert back to that selfish, shoot first - pass second player, especially if he sees his teammates not being aggressive in their own right.  Bryant has taken it upon himself to encourage guys like Steve Blake, Jodie Meeks and Jordan Hill that when they are on the floor they have to be out there and be a threat to the other team otherwise they are just taking up space on the floor and its seemingly 5 on 4 then.  The role players have taken the advice from their leader and have been aggressive when on the court, although that aggressiveness might sometimes play against them, but then that's when Kobe will tighten the reigns and establish order.  After an impressive home stand where they won five out of six, the Lakers ventured out for a brief three game road trip, first making a stop up north to take on the Sacramento Kings.  These two teams played less then 10 days ago with the Lakers coming away with a 102-97 win, but the Kings felt that they were able to hang with the star studded team and that a second chance coming so quickly to prove that to everyone was inviting.  It didn't start out as many would've envisioned as the Lakers came out with all weapons firing and quickly taking a double digit lead and holding it well through the opening quarter.  The Kings stayed poised and thanks in large part to the stellar play from their bench the Kings not only erased the double digit deficit, but then took the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 75-71.  That's when The Black Mamba decided to take over and lead his team to their first road win of the season, finishing with a game high 31 points as the Lakers pulled out a 90-88 win over the young, fiesty Kings.  Bryant finished 11-19 from the field including 5-6 from behind the three point line and also grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.  Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol each finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 block shots each, establishing the Lakers inside prescence from the very start.  The Kings got a season high from Marcus Thornton, coming off the bench to put up a team high 21 points in 21 minutes while DeMarcus Cousins finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks and Aaron Brooks added 13 points and 3 assists in the loss.  The Lakers bench was a non factor for most of the game, being outscored 41-15 by the Kings reserves.  Bryant scored 15 of the Lakers 19 fourth quarter points, hitting 3-4 from behind the three point line as Kings fans moaned and groaned every possession that Kobe got the ball offensively and the Kings just had no answer.  Bryant for the first time this season scored 30 or more points in back to back games and did say after the game that he felt it's time that he asserts himself more on the offensive end and get into that scorers mentality instead of looking to be more of a facilitator.  The Lakers will have a test on their hands Friday night as they travel to the Midwest for a matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies as Pau Gasol returns to the team that he spent his first eights years with, but now taken over by a younger Gasol, his brother Marc.

Lakers make the most of an ugly situation against Grizzlies
Bryant hampered by a sinus infection plays, but does little in victory

MEMPHIS - The Lakers have been looking more like a team that is comfortable with one another and the trust factor is continuing to grow game by game and on night's like the Lakers just experienced, it's that trust factor and that comfortability that they can take solace in knowing they can pull out ugly wins when you just don't have it and neither do your opponents.  Kobe Bryant had been battling a sinus infection since after the Lakers win over the Kings on Wednesday night and although he suited up and started and played he was just not able to be effective scoring the ball after averaging 33 points in his last two games, but the Lakers got a boost from a former Grizzlie, in Pau Gasol.  Gasol returning to and playing against the team that he spent his first eight years with before being traded to the Lakers which just so happened to bring his younger brother (the now famous Gasol in Memphis) Marc to the Grizzlies and although little brother has been getting the better of big brother over the last few years, it was big brothers night to shine in a place he use to call home.  Pau led the Lakers with a game high 23 points and pulled down 8 rebounds and was efficient from the field finishing 10-16 for the game.  Dwight Howard added 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds while blocking 4 shots and off the bench Jodie Meeks scored 10 points, as no other Laker player managed to reach double figures.  Kobe finished with a season low 6 points, but did manage to dish out 7 assists and pick up 4 steals in his weaken state.  The Lakers opened up the game strong and jumped on the Grizzlies quickly, taking a 26-12 lead after the first quarter, but they saw that fourteen point lead dwindle down to 5 going into the fourth quarter, but they were able to hold on to pull off an 82-75 victory.  The Grizzlies had their opportunities, but it was just one of those nights where both teams were just not able to get a flow for the game.  Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies with a team high 16 points, hitting 8-14 shots for the game and point guard Mike Conley added 12 points and dished out 6 assists.  Rudy Gay, the Grizzlies leading scorer was held to just 8 points on 4-9 shooting from the field and the younger Gasol finished with just 9 points, but a game high 14 rebounds.  The Lakers spent most of their night at the free throw line, fishing the game 18-30 while the Grizzlies couldn't buy a call and went a disappointing 9-13 from the line.  For the Lakers it was their fourth straight win in a row, their longest now of the season and also their second straight road win to even up their road record on the year at 2-2.  This game was also the first game of a back-to-back set for the Lakers who had just one back-to-back series so far this season and that was the first two days of the regular season.  They will wrap up their three game road trip and back-to-back setting taking on the Dallas Mavericks, the team that defeated them on opening night.
