December 8, 2019 St. Francis at Robert Morris [NEC]

Coming off a huge win against his brother, Kostadin “Dinko” Dragomirov can double-down on Oggy’s sorrows by heading to his alma mater to defeat them in the first game of conference play. Dinko wasn’t a math major, but he knew he was committing a logical fallacy by using the transitive property to predict his margin of victory this game: his brother beat Robert Morris by 25, and he beat his brother by 16, but he knew he probably wasn’t 41 points better than the Colonials. Despite that, he was feeling great about his team’s chances and was looking forward to playing on the court where he watched his brother’s teammates play several times.

Knowing that senior PF Will Frandsen was their best player and very dangerous, Dinko focused on locking him down and clogging the paint, which proved to be his team’s undoing. Despite a great start, being up 10-3, his team went cold and Tommy Zwikker was unstoppable for the Colonials. He had 11 points at halftime, and the Red Flash were lucky the game was tied at 32 as they were losing the turnover battle 6-1.

After a close start to the 2nd half, St. Francis fell apart in the middle of the half and couldn’t come back. It was disappointing and undisciplined team play from a team that must have been tired or overconfident from their big win the night before.

Dinko held Will Frandson to 9 points, but Tommy Zwikker’s 27 points on 11-18 shooting did them in, along with their 10 turnovers and only 15 rebounds. Casey Tyler had 21 points, in what ultimately amounted to window dressing.

Around the NCAA
  • Oggy traveled back to Denver and avenged their previous loss to DU by winning easily (65-40). It couldn’t make up for the loss to his brother, but the 25 point victory felt great.
  • #1 Kansas lost to DePaul 79-82.
  • After Davidson beat Duke and North Carolina, they’ve dropped 2 straight games to UNC Charlotte and UCLA.

Around the NBA
  • The Mavericks (18-5), Clippers (18-6), and Lakers (17-7) are in a three-way battle for the top of the West.
  • The Celtics (15-6), Magic (15-7), and Bucks (15-8) are in a three-way battle for the top of the West.
  • The Utah Jazz are the biggest underachievers this season, sitting at 7-16 and in last place in the West. This is large part to an awful defense that’s allowing other teams to shoot 49.3% from the field.
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo has taken a big step forward and is scoring over 33 points and grabbing over 14 rebounds per game. Last year’s MVP decided that he had another level to take it to.
  • Luka Doncic continues his ascension, and is making an absurd 54.5% of his three pointers.
  • Looking at the rookies, Ja Morant leads all rookies with 23.5 points per game, with Zion Williamson just behind at 22.8.
  • Giannis and LeBron have won the November Player of the Month awards.

Youch, disappointing loss for the Red Flash there but hopefully that teaches them to keep a level head whether they win a big game or not.

Interesting to see the Magic in the top three of the East -- usually they have a terrible time of getting to the front of the pack. Maybe this is Orlando's year?

Spoiler - it gets worse for the Red Flash before it gets better

Vucevic is an absolute monster for Orlando, which I think is a big part of their record. I'm interested to see if it keeps up into January (I'm in January for CHoops, but not NBA yet).

Thanks! 2K was really ahead of its time when it came to CHoops and NFL 2K halftime/pregame/weekly recap shows. Really impressed, even if the graphics are rough.

Dinko Captured his own feelings about that game well

December 21, 2019 St. Francis at Duquesne [non-conference]

After the disappointing loss to Robert Morris, the Red Flash bounced back with a big win over Iona, outscoring them by 24 points in the second half and getting a double-double from Sophomore Muhamed Payne. However, there’s a much tougher opponent this evening: Dinko’s alma mater Duquesne University. It was a special night for him, and the university even took the time to acknowledge him and his family, thanking them for the 9 years he spent at the university playing and coaching the Dukes. Before the game he was welcomed onto the floor and recognized, where the fans and students cheered and clapped for him.

But then it was time to focus. His brother had lost by 6 to Duquesne, but it wasn’t really ever that close. He would need to play disciplined and be patient on offense to break down the 2-3 zone that they loved to play.

Patience was desperately needed by Dinko, as he watched the worst display of basketball he’s seen since coming to the United States. With 4 minutes left in the first half, his team had only scored 3 points. They had made a single three pointer. He was beside himself…how could they be playing this bad! He knew Duquesne was good, and that made him happy, but his team was not this bad.

After being down 17-0, his team managed to score 10 points, to make it 36-10 at half. There was no chance for his boys tonight, how would he salvage the 2nd half? He decided to focus on team play and building up the confidence of his big man: Zygis Keita.

Duquesne grew their lead over the 2nd half thanks to their superior toughness and finishing, but at least it wasn’t such a dire display of basketball. The Red Flash were only outscored by 9 in the 2nd, and Keita scored 22 points and was nearly unstoppable…though not as unstoppable as the Dukes were on the other end.

Not much good can be taken from a 35 point loss, but maybe Kostadin had found something to build on with Keita in the post, and at least he lost to his favorite team in the world, the beloved Duquesne Dukes. If he was going to get destroyed, he’d prefer it was to them.

Around the NCAA
  • #1 Tennessee and #10 Providence are the first two teams to the undefeated 10-win mark.
  • #22 Georgetown beat #5 Memphis, handing the Tigers their 2nd loss. Top prospect Juan King with had 33 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Around the NBA
  • Through 8 weeks, this season is clearly the Giannis and LeBron show. The 2 stars have combined for 9 of the 16 Player of the Week awards and are looking like they’re the All-Star captains this year.
  • Despite being on the trade block, Steven Adams is producing for OKC and is currently slated to make the All-Star game.
  • After the Dallas Mavericks lost 4 straight games, the Los Angeles Clippers find themselves clearly ahead in the West with a 23-7 record, 2.5 games ahead of the Lakers.
  • Spots 5-10 out West are very tight: Phoenix (16-12), Portland (16-13), San Antonio (15-12), Golden State (16-14), Memphis (16-14), and Houston (15-13) are all in the running for the last 4 playoff spots.
  • All 3 power rankings (NBA, 2K, Erick Boenisch) have the same top 4: Los Angeles Clippers (22-6), Dallas Mavericks (19-6), Milwaukee Bucks (18-9), and Boston Celtics (16-8)
  • The Wizards have traded away SF Admiral Schofield to the Cavaliers in exchange for C Ante Zizic and a the worst of two 2024 2nd round picks.
