1/24/04 - High Point (8-7) @ Birmingham-Southern (6-7)

Panthers Win Defensive Battle 51-48

Birmingham, AL - Defense was the name of the game tonight. High Point shot only 42%, but fared better than Birmingham-Southern's 38% shooting. In the end, High Point won the game 51-48 in a very low scoring affair. The Panthers forced Birmingham-Southern into 16 turnovers to their 11, which ultimately played a key role in the tight game.

Coach Frizzell was fairly pleased with his team's performance. "We played very well on defense. We got lots of steals and forced them into a lot of bad shots, which resulted in their poor shooting percentage. After 4 straight games of allowing our opponents to shoot at least 50%, it is nice to hold Birmingham-Southern to only 38%. On offense, we were a little out of sync. We didn't shoot very well in this game, something that has been plaguing us all season. Hopefully, before the Big East Tournament, we can get our act together on offense, because we need to be efficient there."

1/26/04 - High Point (9-7) @ NC A&M (7-9)

Friars Fry Panthers 76-57

Durham, NC - Shooting 18% in the first half of a basketball game is certainly a way to dig yourself a very deep hole, and that's just what the Panthers did today as the North Carolina A&M Friars held to Panthers to a miserable 18% shooting. The Panthers also committed 15 turnovers in their 17 point first half effort. Though the Panthers offense would improve in the second half and they would end up shooting 40%, they were too far behind, especially since the Friars caught fire late in the game. The Panthers got within 7 with 7 minutes left on a 10-0 run, but got no closer as they wound up losing by 19 points on the road.

"We played terrible tonight," commented head coach James Frizzell. "The stats do not show how terribly we really played, but we played plain awful. This is by far the worst game I have ever coached. Shots were clanking off the rim. We were 0/11 from three point range. The only reason we ended up shooting 40% is because they [NC A&M] got lazy and we were able to get a bunch of layups. This is embarrassing."

1/31/04 - Liberty (9-5) @ High Point (9-8)

Panthers Dominate Flames, Win 66-36

High Point, NC - The High Point Panthers, after being embarrassed by North Carolina A&M just 5 says earlier, came out and performed a clinic tonight, as the Panthers held the Liberty Flames to a pathetic 27% shooting. The Panthers played a 2-3 zone most of the day as Coach Frizzell found success with it. "Normally I switch up defenses a lot between man to man, a 2-3 zone, and a 1-3-1 zone, but tonight they seemed particularly bothered by our 2-3 zone, so I stuck with it, and it worked very well."

The Panthers were out of the gates fast as they went on a 13-0 run early in the first half and an 8-0 run later on. Combine that with a 10-0 run late in the game and you see exactly why High Point won. High Point's offense was pretty good tonight, but the key was the defense, as Liberty would go for extended periods of time without scoring a single point. Defense was the name of the game tonight.

Coach Frizzell was pleased with the nice win. "We have been inconsistent as of late," he said. "It's really nice to win, but we have been see sawing our last eight or so ballgames and that has to stop. Hopefully, we can carry some of the momentum we gained here today and use it in the future. Now January is over and we must get down and dirty."

January Recap

The High Point Panthers had a month of inconsistency this January. They never won more than 1 in a row and never lost more than 1 in a row, the whole month. They began with a 90-59 pounding of Charleston-Southern in Charleston to open up Big South Conference play, getting the fans back in High Point excited about conference play. However, they would follow that 31 point win up with a 60-69 loss to Coastal Carolina. They would bounce back with a nice 65-60 win over the Winthrop Eagles, considered by many to be the class of the Big South. They would go on to lose to Liberty and beat VMI. They would follow up the VMI win with a loss to Radord. They would theb beat Birmingham-Southern, lose to North Carolina A&M, and hold Libery to just 36 points in their final game of the month, a 66-36 win in High Point.

The Panthers went 5-4 in the month of January and Coach Frizzell was disappointed with that record. "Well, 5-4 does not look too bad, but the fact is we did not play that well. We would have a nice game where we played well, but then would follow that up with a loss to somebody we should have beat. It bothers me we never won more than 1 game in a row, but it comforts me that we did not lose more than 1 game in a row. All in all, it was an okay month, but a very frustrating one for sure."

Re: Coaching Career of James Frizzell (ESPN College Hoops 2K4)

I put in 2k5 for the PS2 today and I think I like it better than the next gen ones. It is a nice change of pace at the least and I am thinking of doing a Legacy with Ohio State and it would be focused on Jamar Butler's career. The only problem with this game is the bogus charging calls.

Yes, 2K5 did have some trouble with charging. 2K5 was pretty good, if I recall correctly. 2K5 had some awesome graphics for it's time as well, much better than 2K4's. However, I like 2K4's atmosphere better and just like the overall pace of the game. Plus, I like the recruiting in 2K4 better. Also, High Point's new logo and uniforms came in 2K5, which I hate!

Hope to see you maybe document your Ohio State dynasty. That would be cool to see.

I really have not like College Hoops on the 360. It just seems to have lost that college atmosphere and the "fun factor" to me, though I might just be crazy and suffering from nostalgia.

Thanks for following!
