Re: "Dragon Breath" A UAB Dynasty (NCAA12)

BLAZER WEEKLY

BLAZERS FIND A WAY:

Heasing into the fourth quarter the Blazers
had a 23-6 lead and was on cruise control
to get the win. Someone forgot to let Hughes
and ECU know. Hughes threw two fourth qtr
touchdown passes and led another great drive
to help the Pirates rip off 21 points and a four
point lead with 40 seconds left. With the game all
but over Blazer quarter Andrea Sharpe put the
game in the hands of RS Freshmen WR Vince Jackson
finding him in the back of the end zone for the
play of the game and the win. Blazers are now
3-0.

"THEY SAID IT"
" Im not gonna lie, heading into the fourth I figured we'd score once more and close the game off with a blowout win."
RB D. Pryor

"Our pass game struggle most of the afternoon, I was hoping it didnt come down to us having to throw after ECU came back."
CB K. Evans

"When the stat sheet said he passed for 400 yards I thought it was a miss print, we had his number all afternoon."
FS N. Williams

"All I could do was thank god after the score, I was blessed for the opportunity to make a play."
WR V. Jackson

Recruiting News!
Currently Nine recruits have the Blazers in their top three including #19 ranked Free Safety Scott Houston. The three star prospect out of Houston, Mississippi has set up a official visit for UAB's next home game against Mississippi State. It is said that Ole Miss has the upper hand between Miss State and UAB

Travis Rhatigan had his weekly press conference with Blazer Weekly on Wednesday and reflected back on last Saturday's game against East Carolina as well as looked ahead to the huge rivalry game at Troy (2-1). Among the topics discussed were the great first three quarters as well as the fourth quarter loss of focus and how to contain Troys quarterback M. Moore.

Going into the half with a 16-3 lead. How were you feeling for the second half.
"We weren't sure how to feel. We had success running the ball but we struggled passing. ECU is extremely fast in the secondary and they did some good things to confuse Sharpe. Defensively we had them were we wanted them. We knew Hughes was gonna throw the ball up for grabs and we contained Lee, but we lost focus of Humphrey's.

As the fourth quarter started you were up 23-6. Where did the focus go. Can you attest that to coaching or did ECU prove the first half to be fluke like.

"We just ran out of gas I feel. It has nothing to do with conditioning and or coaching. Our offense put our defense in bad situations with the three and outs. After controlling the TOP in the first half ECU was able to get their offense the ball and control the tempo. After ECU took the lead, I gathered the offense and told them we need them, then I pulled Sharpe to the side and told him its time to step up. He made the right reads the final drive and won the game for us.

On to Troy now coach, what do you expect from them and how do you plan to slow down their attack as well as deal with the emotions of rivalry week.
"Troy is a good team, they opened the season beating Clemson, went to the wire with Arkansas and beat Middle Tennessee pretty good last week. We need to get pressure on him from everywhere, by him I mean Mike Moore. Great arm and great awareness he knows the game. Like last week we face another good receiver in Chad Washington we'll probably have Nate Williams over the top spying him. Offensively its all about executing, theyre pretty small up front so we may focus on the run game a bit more this week and try to get Sharpe comfortable situations to throw the ball. As for the rivalry, this is my first one. You can feel the tension around the campus as this is Troy week. Most of these guys played each other in High school and are very familiar with each other. So I expect it to be a battle "

Game Notes
UAB comes to Troy after a very emotional win last week against ECU. They face as Troy team much like themselves as they both grabbed major upsets to start the season. UAB is led by their defense who is fourth in the country in sacks led by DT DJ Washington (4) FS Nate Williams is comiong off a two interception week that earned him conference player of the week. These two guys need to be on their A- game if they plan to stop this Troy attack led by quarterback Mike Moore. Moore leads the sun belt conference in yards passing and his go to receiver is Chad Washington who has 328 yards on 22 catches but he has yet to score a touchdown. For UAB on offense they look for Sharpe to become more consistent until then look for tailbacks Danny Pryor and Matthew Scott to continue to split carries. Troy's defense hasn't been stellar to this point but with this being a rivalry expect some big plays from this unit.

PREDICTION: UAB's defense proves to much in a low scoring contest
UAB 17 Troy 14

IN YOUR FACE!
BLAZERS RUB IT IN AGAINST HATED RIVAL TROY

~AP~ TROY, AL--- The Blazers seem to be gaining momentum heading into next week's showdown with Mississippi State as they dominate hated rival Troy 45-7. Andre Sharpe threw three touchdown passes and ran for one as the defense grabbed three interception to complete the route.
"Huge win for us today!" said first year coach Travis Rhatigan who has the Blazers off to their best start in school history since becoming a Division one school. "Was proud at how our guys handled their emotions during the game as certain situations that arose had me nervous for their response"

~RECAP~

A packed house in Memorial stadium saw the Blazers and Trojans do business in this hated in state rivalry game. During pre-game warm ups both teams met in the middle of the field and had to be separated by both coaching staffs. After the coin toss UAB kicked off to the Trojans. M. Moore came on the field for Troy as the starting quarterback leading the Sun Belt in passing yards. To this point he had not thrown a interception but on the first play of the game cornerback #2 Stephens jumped a comeback route and gave the Blazers the ball in Troy territory. Another scuffle after the play saw the Blazers fired up and ready to go. With Sharpe's struggling in weeks prior the Blazers came out giving the Trojans a heavy dose of Scott and Pryor in fact their first six plays were runs as the tandem would get the Blazers down to the 8 yard line, thats when Sharpe fired a bullet to receiver M. Ross giving the Blazers the lead in the first quarter 7-0. Troy would answer however calming down on the second drive in fact they needed only one for tailback D. Day to break off a 70 yard touchdown run to knott the score up at 7-7 ending the first quarter.

(#2 STEPHENS STEPS IN FRON OF TRY RECEIVER Z. PIERCE FOR THE INT) (ROSS GRABS THIS TIEGHT PASS IN COVERAGE FOR A SCORE)

The second quarter opened with a 68 yard touchdown reception from Blazer leading receiver I. Wilson. Wilson, who has at least one touchdown reception in every game this season for the Blazers found the whole in the defense and outraced the Trojan secondary down the sideline for the score. It was the next series when the Blazers defense backed up the pre game scuffle getting very physical with the Troy receivers. FS N. Williams conference USA's defensive player of the week a week ago got up close and personal with Troy running back D. Day. Williams blitz and timed his hit with an unsuspecting Day who needed the assistance of trainers to walk off the field. He would return in the second half. The quarter ended with a Alston 32 yard field goal giving the Blazers a 17-7 halftime lead.

(#5 N. WILLIAMS CRUSHES TROY RB D. DAY IN THE 2ND QTR) (WILLIAMS SHOWS HIS SPEED AS HE RECES FOR THE 68 YARD SCORE)

The third quarter started with Sharpe getting hot. Some very nice balls to Moses as they marched down the field in no-huddle fashion. Sharpe would complete the drive with a un-believable escape eluding a would be sack then finding R. Rawls down the seam giving the Spartans a 24-7 lead. Up to this point Moore and the Troy high powered pass attack struggled as well as leading receiver C. Washington who had no catches. Determined to get him involved Moore tried to fire a pass over the middle to his go to receiver but SS E. Jackson jumped in front of the pass and grabbed the defenses second interception of the day. The interception led to running back D. Pryor getting his first touchdown of the afternoon and putting the Blazers up 31-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

(JACKSON INT SETS UP THIS D. PRYOR TOUCHDOWN RUN, PRYOR HAD 130 YARDS ON THE DAY)

The only bright spot for Troy was tailback D. Day who was able to grab big gains on the Blazers defense who seemed to just be geared at stopping Troy's pass attack, but during short third down situations the Blazers were ready for him and Troy holding them to just 2-8 third downs for the game. A fourth down pass attempt resulted in Moore's third interception of the game as he out jumped a Troy receiver grabbing his fourth interception of the season. Sharpe, who was having a good passing day showed he could do it with his feet scrambling for a 24 yard touchdown as the Troy defenders looked at each other in disbelief. The Blazers were able to get a last touchdown from freshmen running back M. Scott. Scott spelled Pryor perfectly rushing for 70 yards on 10 carries while Pryor grabbed 17 for 130 yards. The Blazers would go on to win in convincing fashion 45-7 leaving the Trojans from Troy to wait a whole year to get win against them.
