Savage Time: Tom Savage Steps In And Leads Houston To Win Over Philly

AP Houston -- Wallowing in a three game losing streak, the Houston Texans were able to snap their skid behind the play of their rookie quarterback Tom Savage. Savage came in for relief for Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the Texans to a 44-30 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick struggled in his first game back from broken ribs and was quickly pulled by Bill O'Brien in favor of the rookie out of Pittsburgh. Savage completed 27-of-43 passes for 316 yards and accounted for 5 touchdowns (3 passing and 2 rushing). Even though he did have two interceptions, the rookie didn't let the turnovers or bright lights phase him.

Quote:
"I just went out and played the game I love. I try to keep myself ready to come in and anytime. You never know when you'll be the next man up"
Texans QB Tom Savage
Savge also got a big helping hand from his all pro receiver Andre Johnson. The former Miami Hurricane caught a career high 20 passes for 189 yards and two touchdown. Johnson abused Cary Williams all game long, catching deeps ball, screen passes, even coming across the middle of the field. Over on the other side DeAndre Hopkins hauled in 6 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Houston also completely eliminated LeSean McCoy from the game holding him to just 16 yards on 8 carriers. But McCoy did score the Eagles lone offensive touchdown. Coach Chip Kelly went away from his running game putting the offensive load on Nick Foles who threw for 266 yards with no touchdowns. Foles also had 4 of the Eagles 6 fumbles in the loss.

Once again the Texans defense was led by the incredible play of J.J. Watt who finished with 6 tackles (5 for loss), 3 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Yeah he was a big surprise. Was able to open up my offense some because he has a way stronger arm then Fitzpatrick. Hope he wasn't a one game wonder.

Re: We Are Texans

Awards Race

MVP and OPOY: Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has played some excellent football helping lead the Panthers to a 7-2 mark which has them has a 3rd seed in the playoff race right behind the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers. The former number one overall pick has completed 209-of-321 passes for 2,116 passing yards, 18 touchdowns (leads the league) and just 3 interceptions. If Newton keeps up this pace, he'll have the MVP award in the bag. (In the running; DAL QB Tony Romo, HOU RE J.J. Watt, GB QB Aaron Rodgers, and HOU HB Arian Foster.)

DPOY: J.J. Watt's play this season is the main factor why the Texans are off to a 6-3 start after only winning 2 games all of last season. Watt has totaled 45 total tackles and a league leading 7 forced fumbles to go along with his league leading 16 sacks. Watt could become the first defensive player to win the MVP award since Lawrence Taylor. But it's almost a fact he'll be winning his second defensive player of the year award. (In the running; KC ROLB Tamba Hali, HOU ROLB Jadeveon Clowney, PHI ROLB Trent Coles, and PIT LOLB Jason Worilds.)

OROY: The number 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft has led the Jacksonville Jaguars to a surprising 4-5 record in a tough AFC South division. Bortles, like most rookie quarterbacks, has had his share of interceptions (5) but he's also thrown for 7 touchdowns and over 1600 yards passing. (In the running; OAK QB Derek Carr,BUF WR Sammy Watkins, NE QB Jimmy Garoppolo, and CHI QB David Fales.)

DROY

DROY: With J.J. Watt getting a lot of attention from blockers on the filed, Jadeveon Clowney has taken advantage of it leading all rookies with 41 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, and 11 sacks in his rookie campaign. Clowney silenced all his doubters about his motor and motivation with a record breaking 1st season. (In the running; SF LOLB Aaron Lynch, OAK LOLB Khalil Mack, HOU LOLB Jason Ankrah, and KC ROLB Dee Ford.)
